Apple’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro could feature 120Hz displays

A new research note from Haitong International Securities’ analyst Jeff Pu (via MacRumors) states that all four of Apple’s 2022 iPhones will feature a 120Hz display refresh rate.

With the iPhone 13, only the Pro models offered a smoother refresh rate. This would move Apple’s smartphones more in-line with high-end Android devices like Samsung’s Galaxy S series.

Pu also says that all iPhone 14 models will feature 6GB of RAM, an upgrade from the 4GB of RAM currently featured in the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13, and the same amount of RAM offered in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Pu also mentions that the iPhone 14 series’ main camera measures in at 48 megapixels and that internal storage will start at 64GB, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max start at 256GB of storage.

Earlier rumours surrounding Apple’s next-gen iPhone indicate that the smartphone line will ditch the display notch entirely for a Samsung-like front-facing hole-punch camera that features a “pill-shaped” design.

Likely, Apple will officially reveal its iPhone 14 line during the tech giant’s annual fall hardware event held in September or October.

Apple’s iPhone 14 rumoured to feature hole-punch camera and under display Face ID

Despite the fact that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are several months away from release, we’re already starting to see viable rumours surrounding Apple’s next flagship smartphone.

Corroborating reports from other reliable leakers and analysts, leaker DylanDKT recently tweeted that Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro smartphones will feature a hole-punch front-facing camera and Face ID.

However, the Face ID sensor will be placed under the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s screen, with DylanDKT stating that the “functionality of these sensors have not been negatively affected by this change.”

Unlike the front-facing camera hole-punch featured in Samsung’s S series smartphones, the iPhone 14’s cutout will reportedly be “pill shaped” and not circular. Further, the standard iPhone 14 will still feature a notch. It remains unclear if Apple plans to still release a 5.1-inch mini version of the iPhone in 2022.

For the record, I’ve never reported on a DylanDKT leak before. However, 9to5Mac and several other notable Apple publications claim that they’re a reliable source of leaks. For example, 9to5Mac says that DylanDKT was a key source of 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro leaks prior to the laptop’s release.

Apple’s iPhone 14 series likely won’t be revealed until this coming September.

Apple’s iPhone 14 reportedly to feature hole-punch camera, ditch notch

Even though the iPhone 14 is several months away from release, rumours surrounding the upcoming smartphone are already starting to appear.

According to ‘Power On,’ a weekly newsletter created by Bloomberg’s often reliable Mark Gurman, Apple’s iPhone 14 lineup will feature several significant changes.

First off, the smartphone will reportedly ditch the notch for a front-facing hole-punch camera similar to what Samsung has offered in its ‘S’ series smartphones for several years. Gurman’s report also mentions that 5G is likely coming to the next-generation version of the iPhone SE.

Alongside the iPhone 14, Bloomberg also confirmed that a new Apple Watch SE and a rugged version of the Apple Watch are on the way, corroborating previous reports regarding both devices. As expected, an Apple Watch Series 8 is also currently in the works.

In the same report, Gurman also mentions Apple’s often-rumoured mixed-reality headset, iOS 16, macOS 13 and a significantly redesigned MacBook Air powered by the tech giant’s in-development M2 chip.

Apple’s iPhone 14 will reportedly feature an upgraded 48-megapixel primary camera

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 will reportedly ditch the current 12-megapixel camera setup and upgrade to a 48-megapixel array, according to credible Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, at first reported by 9to5mac.

It’s likely that the 48-megapixel primary lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro max, while the iPhone 14 and 14 mini (if Apple doesn’t discontinue it) would likely maintain the same camera setup.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a 48-megapixel iPhone leak. A recent report from Jeff Pu, an industry analyst that works with the Asia Customer Supply Chain, echoes Kuo’s report.

A previous leak by YouTuber Jon Prosser suggests that Apple’s 2022 iPhone won’t feature a notch and will instead include a Samsung-like front-facing hole-punch camera. The smartphone is tipped to not include a camera bump due to a slightly thicker body, allowing several lenses, a flash and a LiDAR scanner to sit flush with the phone’s back.

Apart from the aforementioned upgrade, Kuo suggests that the 2023 iPhone — likely called iPhone 15 — will feature a periscopic lens, similar to the Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy S21 Ultra, allowing the smartphone to offer better optical zoom.

As always, take these rumours with a pinch of salt and remember nothing is confirmed until Apple reveals official information about its next-gen iPhone.

Apple’s iPhone 14 could feature 2TB storage option

Though the iPhone 13 series only just went on sale, rumours surrounding Apple’s next-gen iPhone — likely called the iPhone 14 — are already starting to appear.

This year, Apple doubled the base storage for the iPhone 13 mini/iPhone 13 from 64GB to 128GB and added a pricey 1TB storage option for the iPhone 13 Pro/iPhone 13 Pro Max.

With the iPhone 14, it looks like the tech giant could be planning to step up its storage game even further.

The China-based publication MyDrivers, a website with a spotty reputation when it comes to leaks, says that the iPhone 14 will switch to QLC flash storage, allowing Apple to increase the smartphone line’s storage to 2TB. If accurate, it’s likely only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will offer this storage tier.

We’ve already seen several iPhone 14 rumours over the last few weeks, including one that the series will feature a significant change in design for the entire line. Rumours point to the iPhone 14 ditching the display notch entirely, sporting an in-display Touch ID sensor, and of course featuring the usual expected camera/chip improvements.

There are also rumours indicating that Apple will kill off the mini line in favour of offering a cheaper version of the larger Pro Max.

With the iPhone 14 series’ official reveal roughly a year away, it’s important to note that Apple’s plans regarding the smartphone line could change drastically in the coming months.

Apple’s iPhone 14 will reportedly feature a ‘complete redesign’

The iPhone 13 series is very similar to the iPhone 12 lineup in regarding its look and overall performance.

However, according to Bloomberg’s nearly always reliable Mark Gurman, that could change with next year’s iPhone 14. Gurman says that the iPhone 14 will feature a “complete redesign” and the first significant update to the smartphone’s look since 2017’s iPhone X.

You could also argue that, at least as far as design is concerned, the move from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 12 was substantial because of its squared-off sides and entirely redesigned cameras.

Beyond stating that the iPhone 14 will adopt an entirely new look, Gurman didn’t offer additional details regarding the iPhone 14’s redesign. However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently stated that Apple will ditch the display notch with its 2022 iPhone lineup, saying that the smartphone will feature a hole-punch front camera like most high-end Android smartphones.

Other recent rumours indicate Apple will likely drop the iPhone mini from its lineup in favour of a larger “regular” model alongside its “Pro” devices. We’ve also seen reports regarding an under-display Touch ID fingerprint sensor, though it’s unclear if this technology will make its way to Apple’s 2022 smartphone line or in future devices.

As always, approach these rumours with an air of skepticism. Apple’s iPhone 13 series only just released, and iPhone 14 devices are a year away, so the tech giant’s strategy regarding the smartphone line could easily shift in the coming months.

iPhone 14 Pro to feature hole-punch design, 48MP wide camera: report

While Apple’s recently unveiled iPhone 13 series hasn’t even been revealed, that hasn’t stopped new reports from coming out about next year’s models.

According to reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, 2022 will see the release of “two new high-end models equipped with a punch-hole display (replacing the notch area design) and a 48MP wide camera.” Kuo says these phones, which are expected to be called the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, will be the only ones of Apple’s 2022 lineup to feature the “punch-hole display.”

Kuo’s latest comments corroborate previous reports from both himself and fellow Apple leaker Jon Prosser.

In addition to the 14 Pro and Pro Max, Kuo says there will be a “new and more affordable 6.7″ iPhone” (presumably the iPhone 14) coming in fall 2022 as well. Ahead of that, though, he’s expecting a new iPhone SE with 5G support in the first half of 2022.

Of course, Apple still has to release the iPhone 13 series of phones first. For more on the new handsets, read our previous coverage. As well, stay tuned to MobileSyrup for reviews of the new phones in the coming days.

Expect to see at least one 60Hz display in the iPhone 14 series

Next year’s Apple iPhone 14 series will still include at least one model with a 60Hz display, according to a report from The Elec shared by MacRumors.

For context, the freshly-launched iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are both equipped with LTPO OLED displays capable of supporting refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

However, The Elec claims that Apple still plans to use an LTPS OLED display in its iPhone 14 lineup, which means that at least one of the four expected models could sport a 60Hz display.

The decision to bring the iPad Pro’s ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate to the California tech giant’s phone series is a long-overdue one.

The first Android smartphone with a 120Hz display launched in back 2017, as the official Samsung U.S. Twitter account was happy to remind people.

With the iPhone 14 series announcement still a year away, Canadians hoping to snatch up an iPhone 13 with a 120Hz display will have to sit tight for now, as shipping dates for the Pro and Pro Max models have been pushed to late October.
