iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will reportedly feature frosted glass back

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly feature frosted back glass similar to the Pro models, according to a Weibo user that also leaked the iPhone 14 ‘Yellow’ model.

The frosted glass would make the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus look more similar to the Pro models. However, the Pro models are rumoured to get a new titanium frame and even thinner bezel, which would differentiate the two sets.

Alongside the frosted rear, rumours indicate the ‘Dynamic Island‘ will also make its way to each of the iPhone 15 devices this year.

It’s not unusual for the non-Pro models to eventually get features and design elements from the high-end iPhones. For instance, OLED displays were originally available on the Pro models, but they made their way to the lower-end units with the launch of the iPhone 12 series.

MacRumors points out that the rumour comes from a source that accurately leaked the yellow iPhone 14. That said, it’s worth taking this leak with a grain of salt as the source doesn’t have the same solid track record as other leakers.

Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup is expected to launch in September.

Solid-state buttons reportedly aren’t coming to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro anymore

The world of iPhone rumours is fast-moving.

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro series might feature buttons that don’t move, often referred to as solid-state buttons. Fast-forward a few weeks, and reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the tech giant’s plans have changed due to “unresolved technical issues.”

This means that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra, if you believe that rumour) will likely continue to feature physical buttons after all.

Previous rumours suggested that both the iPhone 15’s volume rocker and power button won’t actually move and instead would be touch-sensitive and use a version of the Taptic Engine featured in Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch in order to provide tactile feedback.

Of course, since the iPhone 15 series won’t be revealed until this coming September, the tech giant’s plans could change.

Other iPhone 15 rumours include the possibility of a new ‘Ultra’ device replacing the ‘Max’ line, and that could feature two selfie cameras, and, more importantly, the introduction of USB-C.

iPhone 15 to have Apple Watch Ultra-like ‘Action’ button: leak

Rumours have swirled about the upcoming iPhone 15 series and changes Apple intends to make to the buttons on the device, namely making them capacitive buttons instead of physical buttons, like how the iPhone 7 changed from a physical home button to a capacitive one. Now, new details indicate Apple is working on a low-energy mode to power the capacitive buttons and that one of the buttons will be a user-programmable ‘Action’ button.

The Action button rumour is quite interesting as it builds on a previous rumour that Apple wants to replace the mute switch with a mute button. The details come from a leaker who previously revealed Apple’s Dynamic Island plans ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro launch, via a post on the MacRumors forum.

The leaker refers to the “action (currently ringer switch) button” in the post, which is about all we’ve got to go on. Admittedly, it’s not much — and you should definitely take it with a grain of salt — but the idea is an exciting one. Like the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action button, this new button for the iPhone could let users map certain actions to a single- or double-press. Some posit potential contextual features, such as different actions depending on the app you’re using.

However it ends up working (if it even ends up on the iPhone 15), an Action button could be a major improvement for iPhone users. On my iPhone, I set it to silent and never touched the switch again — I’d love to have some alternate functionality rather than a mostly useless switch.

Capacitive buttons might use new low-energy microprocessor

The other part of the leak and, arguably, the primary focus (though, in my opinion, not the most interesting part) discusses a potential new low-energy microprocessor to handle various tasks, including the rumoured capacitive buttons.

The key thing to understand is that capacitive buttons require power to function, which is a problem if the buttons will handle turning the iPhone on or off.

According to the leaker, the microprocessor will replace the existing low-energy mode that can handle things like Apple Pay or tracking devices via Find My when your iPhone is dead. Along with those features, the new microprocessor will supposedly allow the iPhone 15 series to sense capacitive button presses when the phone is dead or powered down.

The leaker also suggested the capacitive buttons would offer a 3D Touch-like functionality where the pressure applied would change the result. For example, pressing harder on the volume button would increase or decrease the volume faster.

However, the leaker does acknowledge that the 3D Touch-like features may not make it into the final device. They did claim the microprocessor was a “definite.” But as always, you should take this information with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Apple’s iPhone 15 series to place proximity sensor in the Dynamic Island

Apple’s iPhone 15 will reportedly upgrade the Dynamic Island by moving the proximity sensor inside the phone’s housing.

Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the iPhone 15 models will feature a Dynamic Island design similar to the iPhone 14 Pro’s, but with the proximity sensor placed within the cutout.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s proximity sensor is hidden under the display outside of the Dynamic Island. Despite the iPhone 15 models including the proximity sensor within the Dynamic Island, there will be no change to the island’s size.

Kuo reports that the iPhone 15 will offer a 940nm wavelength instead of the 138nm featured in the current iPhone 14 Pro. Further, Kuo says it’s unclear why Apple plans to make this change. It’s possible that this could make the phone more affordable to manufacture, but it’s unclear.

Recent leaks indicate the iPhone 15 Pro Max is reported to feature the smallest bezels yet on any smartphone. Apple will likely reveal its iPhone 15 series this coming fall.

iPhone 15 lineup reported to feature the smallest bezels yet on a phone

The next generation of iPhones is set to bring several significant changes to the table, including reportedly the smallest bezels on any smartphone ever.

Credible Apple leaker Ice Universe took to Twitter to reveal that the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s bezels will measure just 1.55 mm, a significant reduction compared to the 2.17 mm bezels found on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, offering a 28 percent decrease in bezel size.

According to the leaker, the current record for the smallest bezels is held by Xiaomi 13, measuring in at 1.81mm. Aside from the ultra-thin bezels, rumours suggest the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a smaller camera bump and adopt a slightly curved design, creating a seamless transition to the frame.

It also appears that the upcoming series will ditch individual volume buttons in favour of a unified one, while the mute button will be switched to a singular press button.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro could feature thinner, curved bezels

Even though the iPhone 15 Pro is several months away from release, that hasn’t stopped leaks from appearing about Apple’s upcoming high-end smartphone.

According to a rumour from reliable leaker ‘ShrimpApplePro‘ (yes, that really is their Twitter handle, and it does include an anime profile photo), Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max could feature thinner, more curved bezels than the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max. This would give the smartphone an almost Apple Watch-like look regarding its overall design.

ShrimpApplePro says the iPhone 15 Pro will still feature a flat display and that only its bezels will be curved, and that this look will also be featured in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. That said, the lower-end iPhone 15 devices won’t offer thinner bezels. Finally, the leaker says that Apple will stick with the same size as the iPhone 14 series for its iPhone 15 lineup, including the ‘Plus’ line.

As cool as curved bezels sound, this could make buying a glass screen protector for the iPhone 15 Pro difficult and expensive. I’ve also never been a fan of the curved glass Samsung’s flagship S series offers and find that it often results in accidental display presses.

Other recent iPhone 15 rumours include Apple possibly ditching the ‘Max’ name for ‘Ultra,’ as well as offering specific features in its larger high-end smartphone, including a periscope lens.

iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens reportedly coming to entire iPhone 16 line

At this point, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still nine months away from being revealed.

However, that hasn’t stopped rumours from appearing about the iPhone 16 Pro. According to South Korean publication The Elec (via MacRumors), Apple’s upcoming “Folded Zoom” periscope telephoto lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2022, but in 2023, the feature will make its way to all iPhone 16 devices.

Rumours surrounding the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens have circulated for several months, with most of the reports coming from Ming-Chi Kuo. According to the reliable analyst, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s optical zoom periscope lens will reportedly feature a 12-megapixels 1/3-inch sensor with 6x optical zoom. The iPhone 14 Pro/Max currently features 3x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom.

If The Elec’s report is accurate, this will mark the first time Apple has kept at least some features exclusive to its larger 6.7-inch iPhone. The last time we saw differentiation between 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones was back when the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max were released in 2020.

As someone who switched from the bigger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max to the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro because both devices are nearly identical, I’m not thrilled about this rumour.

6.1-inches is the perfect smartphone size and is easy to slide into my pocket or hold in my hand, while 6.7-inches feels massive in comparison.

Rumour suggests Apple plans potential iPhone 15 Pro price hike

Another rumour about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series suggests the Pro devices will cost more than the 14 Pro variants did at launch.

As detailed by MacRumors, an unverified source on Chinese microblogging site Weibo said Apple plans to increase the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (assuming those are the names Apple goes with this year), but didn’t clarify how much more expensive the phones would be compared to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Moreover, the rumour indicated the price hike was intended to widen the gap between the Pro and non-Pro iPhone 15 models. Previously, rumours suggested Apple was considering a price reduction for the iPhone 15 Plus in a bid to boost sales after iPhone 14 Plus sales reportedly didn’t meet expectations.

The rumour also said the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus would gain several features currently only available on the Pro iPhone models, including the Dynamic Island and the 48-megapixel camera.

Of course, it’s worth taking this information with a healthy dose of skepticism. Aside from the source being unverified, we’re still months out from the fall launch of the iPhone 15 series — lots could change between now and then, which could impact any pricing plans Apple might have.

Beyond that, I’m not sure I buy into the part about iPhone Pro features coming to the regular iPhone models. In my eyes, the Pro iPhones already struggle to offer a compelling reason to buy them over the regular iPhones for most people, so unless Apple has some crazy new features planned, increasing the Pro pricing, and lowering the price of the non-Pro iPhones will make them even better value buys.

iPhone 15 Pro could feature more RAM, titanium frame and taptic buttons

The iPhone 15 rumour mill is starting to kick into high gear.

According to a new research note from Haitong International Securities’ tech analyst Jeff Pu (via MacRumors), Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could include new features like additional RAM, a titanium frame and buttons that don’t move but offer haptic feedback, similar to the iPhone SE (2022)’s Touch ID button.

More specifically, Pu says that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature 8GB of RAM, an increase from 6GB in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro would reportedly still feature 6GB). Size-wise, the entire iPhone 15 line-up will measure as follows: 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Pu goes on to say that the iPhone 15 Pro series will feature a new 3nm A17 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will include the same A16 chip as the iPhone 14 Pro series. Overall, Pu expects iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac and AirPods shipments to decline year-over-year in 2023 because product momentum has “turned weak.”

In the same report, Pu mentions that Apple’s high-end Apple Watch Ultra could feature a larger 2.1-inch display and adopt Micro LED screen technology in 2024.

While the iPhone 15 series is still several months away from release, several leaks about the upcoming smartphone line have appeared over the past few months. For example, a report from Ming-Chi Kuo states that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer different features. Adding more fuel to this rumour, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that his sources indicate Apple could ditch “Max” for “Ultra” with its 6.7-inch high-end iPhone.

Finally, there are also rumours the iPhone 15 will make the jump to USB-C following the EU mandating that all smartphones must adopt the port format by 2024. Given the iPhone has been pretty stagnant year-over-year since the iPhone 13, it would be great to see Apple make significant changes with the iPhone 15, especially since iPhone 14 sales are reportedly slow.

Apple is expected to reveal its iPhone 15 line at a hardware event in September.

iPhone 15 could sport iPhone 5c-like rounded back, titanium: leak

Apple’s iPhone 15 may feature a slight design refresh with a rounded back, similar in style to the iPhone 5c. Moreover, the iPhone 15 will reportedly be made of titanium.

The information comes from leaker Shrimp Apple Pro, who has a somewhat mixed tracked record so far (they even note in the tweet that the information is very early and may change ahead of the iPhone 15 launch). According to Shrimp Apple Pro, the iPhone 15 will feature a squared-off front, similar to the current style of the iPhone. However, the back panel will feature rounded corners.

The leaker followed up with another tweet that specifically compared the design to the iPhone 5c, although they still seemed unsure about the details.

Of course, we’re still nearly a year away from new iPhones, whether that’s the iPhone 15 or some other name. Apple typically reveals new iPhones in September (excluding the iPhone SE line). Still, after a few years of the squared-edge iPhone design, it would make sense for Apple to change things up in some way.

As for the titanium portion of the rumour, well, it’s hardly new. Leakers have said for years that Apple would make a titanium iPhone, but the company hasn’t yet. Instead, the iPhone Pro models feature glass fronts and backs with stainless steel edges, while the non-Pro iPhone models use aluminum for the edges. This could be the year where Apple makes a change, but it remains to be seen.
