An “action” button might still be coming to the iPhone 15 Pro this fall

A reprogrammable “action” button might still make its way into the iPhone 15 Pro series, according to a new report from 9to5Mac. The latest obtained CAD files indicate the new button is still part of the phone chassis — albeit without any of the fancy haptic technology previously rumoured.

A new haptic button was previously expected to make its debut on the 2023 Pro i{hones, alongside a haptic volume rocker. These new buttons wouldn’t physically click. Rather, they’d simulate the sensation of a click using haptic vibrations.

Newer reports indicated Apple is no longer going through with solid-state buttons due to “unresolved technical issues.”

If the action button does make it into the final product, it looks like it will click more conventionally. The new button would replace the iconic ringer switch in favour of something that can be assigned to various functions.

The iPhone 15 Pro lineup is expected to launch in September.

iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will reportedly feature frosted glass back

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly feature frosted back glass similar to the Pro models, according to a Weibo user that also leaked the iPhone 14 ‘Yellow’ model.

The frosted glass would make the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus look more similar to the Pro models. However, the Pro models are rumoured to get a new titanium frame and even thinner bezel, which would differentiate the two sets.

Alongside the frosted rear, rumours indicate the ‘Dynamic Island‘ will also make its way to each of the iPhone 15 devices this year.

It’s not unusual for the non-Pro models to eventually get features and design elements from the high-end iPhones. For instance, OLED displays were originally available on the Pro models, but they made their way to the lower-end units with the launch of the iPhone 12 series.

MacRumors points out that the rumour comes from a source that accurately leaked the yellow iPhone 14. That said, it’s worth taking this leak with a grain of salt as the source doesn’t have the same solid track record as other leakers.

iPhone 15 Pro to continue with Action button, according to leak

According to a new leak, the iPhone 15 Pro will reportedly have a programmable ‘Action’ button.

The leaker, @analyst941, has claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action button is going as planned and you’ll be able to control the Camera app. 9to5Mac calls this a sketchy claim, but they point out that the leaker was right about the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island, a year ago.

Alongside all these details, the leaker claims that the Action button will be Force-sensitive (no, not like a Jedi), similar to 3D touch, so it can understand if you’re tapping it, pressing it lightly or hard.

This leak counters what analyst Jeff Pu has heard from sources familiar with Apple’s supply chain. Pu believes that Apple has moved away from capacitive buttons due to complications with a complex design. And the even more well-known Ming-Chi Kuo has corroborated Pu.

If the leak indicates that the Action button will be capacitive, it’s possible that our leaker is incorrect. Apple will stick with mechanical buttons and not actually have the button.

We’re months away from a potential iPhone 15 series, so we’ll learn more sooner than later.

Solid-state buttons reportedly aren’t coming to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro anymore

The world of iPhone rumours is fast-moving.

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro series might feature buttons that don’t move, often referred to as solid-state buttons. Fast-forward a few weeks, and reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the tech giant’s plans have changed due to “unresolved technical issues.”

This means that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (or Ultra, if you believe that rumour) will likely continue to feature physical buttons after all.

Previous rumours suggested that both the iPhone 15’s volume rocker and power button won’t actually move and instead would be touch-sensitive and use a version of the Taptic Engine featured in Apple’s iPhone and Apple Watch in order to provide tactile feedback.

Of course, since the iPhone 15 series won’t be revealed until this coming September, the tech giant’s plans could change.

Other iPhone 15 rumours include the possibility of a new ‘Ultra’ device replacing the ‘Max’ line, and that could feature two selfie cameras, and, more importantly, the introduction of USB-C.

iPhone 15 Pro might sport single, unified volume rocker, mute button

Rumours that Apple will ditch physical buttons on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro line have swirled for a while, but a new report suggests the company might drop the dual volume buttons and ditch the mute switch.

The detail comes via YouTuber @ZoneOfTech, who posted on Twitter that they are “almost 100% sure” that the iPhone 15 Pro will sport a single unified volume button.

ZoneOfTech made the assertion after comparing previously-leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro. The 15 Pro shows a single indentation with two pins, whereas the regular iPhone 15 render has two separate slots with four pins total.

Based on the same CAD renders, ZoneOfTech is also “100% sure that the mute switch will also switch to a singular press button” instead of the up/down switch the iPhone uses now.

Admittedly, the CAD renders aren’t much to go on alone. However, 9to5Mac reportedly receive information from a source confirming the single volume button, adding credence to the rumour.

It’ll be interesting to see what else comes out about the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro ahead of the likely September launch. Coupled with rumours about solid-state buttons with haptic feedback for the Pro models, it’s not a stretch to imagine Apple will reimagine other parts of the button too.

Moreover, while some love the mute switch, I could see moving from a switch to a button possibly offering some convenience benefits. For example, it could allow for expanded do not disturb options or automated silencing at specific times since iOS would no longer be restricted by the physical position of the switch.

iPhone 15 Pro renders show off thinner bezels, deeper camera bump and USB-C port

Along with the recent leak of the iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone 15 Pro Max’s reported USB-C port, an in-depth look at what could be the smartphone’s overall design has appeared.

Renders created by freelance 3D artist Ian Zelbo that were first published on 9to5Mac show off the iPhone 15 Pro’s and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s slightly thinner bezels, subtly curved display edges and a USB-C port. On the other hand, the renders don’t feature Power or Volume buttons, so it’s unclear if the designs back up recent rumours regarding the iPhone 15 Pro switching to buttons that don’t actually move.

According to 9to5Mac and Zelbo, these “early CAD drawings are based on information sourced from Apple’s parts suppliers. With this in mind, it’s important to point out that the phone’s design could change before its expected September reveal.

Previous iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone 15 Pro Max rumours indicate that the smartphones will still be available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch variants, respectively, and that they’ll feature a new A17 Bionic chipset alongside an upgrade to 8GB of RAM and, of course, the switch to USB-C following the EU’s mandate surrounding the port.

Leaked image reportedly shows iPhone 15 Pro with a USB-C port

We’re only one-and-a-half month into 2023, and leaks about the upcoming ‘September-expected’ iPhone 15 are already starting to heat up.

Recent rumours suggest the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will still be available with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, but that the screen will be slightly curved. Other than that, we expect the Pro series devices to feature a new A17 Bionic chipset, 8GB of RAM and a new set of volume and power buttons that don’t move when you press them.

Now, a new leaked image (not a render) shared by leaker Unknownz21 (@URedditor) shows off the iPhone 15 Pro in a rumoured Titanium frame alongside a USB-C port.

“Here’s an actual close up of the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 Pro. No imagination or rendering required.” wrote Unknownz21. The bottom of the alleged iPhone 15 Pro photo makes the device look like it has the same layout as the iPhone 14 Pro, with the screw and speaker holes in the same place, albeit with a USB-C port. Further, the leaked image might also be the first look at the rumoured titanium design of the iPhone 15 Pro. Reports suggest that Apple will transition from stainless steel to titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro lineup, resulting in a matte finish similar to the Apple Watch Ultra.

In addition to the leaked photo, 9to5Mac published exclusive CAD renders of the upcoming flagship device. 9to5’s report also says that the CAD renders suggest a move away from the lightning port, and the introduction of USB-C charging. The report goes on to say that the camera bump on the back of the device is also thicker than before, and that Apple might upgrade the camera system with new sensors and lenses.

The volume rocker and the power button look like capacitive touch buttons, instead of physical ones, while the mute switch seems to sport a smaller and rounder shape.

It’s worth noting that the renders were created using an initial CAD model and may not depict every aspect of Apple’s final flagship design. However, they do offer insight into what we can anticipate from one of the most eagerly awaited smartphones of the year.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro could feature new design with thinner bezels

If you’re starting to grow tired of the iPhone’s look (like me), you’ll likely be pleased to learn that iPhone 15 Pro design change rumours are circulating again.

According to Apple leaker ShrimpApplePro (yes, that really is their online username), the iPhone 15 Pro’s bezels “will be thinner.” ShrimpApplePro also reported a similar rumour a few weeks ago but said this new corroborating report comes from a different source.

ShrimpApplePro’s original report said that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will still be available with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, and that the screen will be slightly curved, similar to the Apple Watch. You aren’t wrong if this sounds reminiscent of the screens featured in Samsung’s flagship S series line.

If you’re wondering why we’re reporting about rumours sourced from such a ridiculously named Twitter account with an anime profile photo, allow me to enlighten you. This is the same leaker that revealed the iPhone 14 Pro’s dynamic island ahead of Apple’s official reveal, and historically, they have a pretty solid track record for accuracy.

Other recent iPhone 15 Pro rumours include a faster A17 Bionic chip, the switch to USB-C, 8GB of RAM and new volume and power buttons that don’t move when you press them.

Like in years past, Apple will likely reveal its next flagship smartphone this coming fall.

iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens reportedly coming to entire iPhone 16 line

At this point, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still nine months away from being revealed.

However, that hasn’t stopped rumours from appearing about the iPhone 16 Pro. According to South Korean publication The Elec (via MacRumors), Apple’s upcoming “Folded Zoom” periscope telephoto lens will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max in 2022, but in 2023, the feature will make its way to all iPhone 16 devices.

Rumours surrounding the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope lens have circulated for several months, with most of the reports coming from Ming-Chi Kuo. According to the reliable analyst, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s optical zoom periscope lens will reportedly feature a 12-megapixels 1/3-inch sensor with 6x optical zoom. The iPhone 14 Pro/Max currently features 3x optical zoom and 15x digital zoom.

If The Elec’s report is accurate, this will mark the first time Apple has kept at least some features exclusive to its larger 6.7-inch iPhone. The last time we saw differentiation between 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones was back when the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max were released in 2020.

As someone who switched from the bigger 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max to the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro because both devices are nearly identical, I’m not thrilled about this rumour.

6.1-inches is the perfect smartphone size and is easy to slide into my pocket or hold in my hand, while 6.7-inches feels massive in comparison.

iPhone 15 Pro lineup reported to ditch clicky power and volume buttons

In October 2022, we reported that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro lineup would ditch the physical click-touch and power buttons in favour of new solid-state buttons. Back then, the information was shared by reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and now he’s doubling down on his prediction.

According to Kuo, if the change in buttons is received well by iPhone users, Apple will implement it in its other high-end devices.

“My latest survey indicates that high-end iPhone 15 models will feature solid-state buttons and will equip with additional Taptic Engines to simulate the feel of physical buttons’ force feedback,” wrote Kuo. “As the exclusive supplier of Taptic Engine’s controller IC for solid-state buttons, Cirrus Logic stands to benefit markedly from this new design. If users respond well to this new design, I think it may be adopted in other high-end models of product lines in the future.”

If the Taptic Engine technology on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is similar to what Apple implemented on the iPhone 7’s Touch ID button, removing physical volume and power buttons wouldn’t likely be a significant issue for most users.

From what we know, the iPhone 15 line-up will measure as follows: 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max. Further, the iPhone 15 Pro series will feature a new 3nm A17 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will include the same A16 chip as the iPhone 14 Pro series.

Rumours also suggest that the iPhone 15 series Pro devices will cost more than the 14 Pro variants did at launch. Read more about it here.
