Apple’s next iPhone SE will feature 5G and iPhone 8-era design

It looks like Apple’s next iPhone SE won’t be the jump forward some were hoping for.

According to Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman, Apple will introduce its 3rd-generation iPhone SE through a virtual spring presentation in March or April.

As expected, the smartphone will feature an iPhone 8-like design that includes a physical Home Button and sizable bezels, with the key upgrades consisting of 5G connectivity and the iPhone 13’s A15 chip. Gurman doesn’t dive into more detail, but the smartphone will likely also feature camera upgrades and a storage increase to at least 128GB.

With all of this in mind, if you were hoping a more modern design would finally make its way to the iPhone SE, it looks like you’ll be out of luck in 2022.

Apple’s iPhone SE (2020) looked extremely outdated back in 2020, and the fact that the tech giant is reportedly sticking with nearly the same design in 2022 certainly doesn’t bode well for those hoping to see a more modern entry-level iPhone this year.

3rd-gen iPhone SE to reportedly release in Q1, 2022

From credible Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo to Nikkei, we’ve heard it time and time again — the third-gen iPhone SE will release in 2022.

Now, a new report from Taiwanese research firm TrendForce suggests we’ll be able to get our hands on the device in Q1, 2022, adding strength to the longstanding claims.

“Apple is staying with the plan to release its third-generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22,” reads the report. “The third-generation iPhone SE is expected to be a major instrument in helping Apple establish a presence in the market segment for mid-range 5G smartphones. Its production volume for 2022 is forecasted to reach 25-30 million units.”

From what we know so far, the upcoming iPhone SE will feature the same 4.7-inch LCD display as the current SE model, with the only exceptions being a better processor and 5G support.

Earlier leaks also suggest that Apple plans to start producing the new iPhone SE in December and ship it to customers in 2022. This launch lineup makes sense, given the tech giant typically releases the SE version of its iPhones in the spring. The new device could be perfect for people looking to pick up a reliable 5G phone without having to burn a hole in their pockets.

iPhone SE Plus to reportedly release in 2022

A display analyst is adding weight to previous rumours about the next iPhone SE.

The range of leaks and rumours paints a different picture for the next SE installment. Some state that the next iteration of the iPhone SE will be based on the iPhone XR, which means it won’t sport bezels and a physical home button and might include a notch for Face ID.

On the other hand, credible Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Japanese blog Macotakara have stated that the new version of the iPhone SE won’t be very different from the 2020 SE model, with the only exceptions being a better processor and 5G support.

Now, credible display analyst Ross Young says that the next iteration of the special edition iPhone will be called the “‌iPhone SE‌ Plus.” However, it won’t sport a bigger screen or body. According to Young, the upcoming iPhone SE will feature the same 4.7-inch LCD display as the current iteration, in line with Ming-Chi Kuo and Macotakara’s statements.

Young also states that Apple is developing a bigger iPhone SE that will be released sometime in 2024. The smartphone is believed to have a 5.7-inch to 6.1-inch LCD display and a hole-punch camera.

While no exact date for the next SE instalment release was leaked, Young and Kuo say the new iPhone SE will launch in the first half of 2022, hinting that it could appear at Apple’s spring event.

Don’t expect any more Apple events this year: report

Apple unveiled its highly-anticipated MacBook Pro refresh at its ‘Unleashed’ event on October 18th, which could be the last Apple event for this year.

People following Apple closely expected potentially three events from the company this year, similar to what it did last fall. In 2020, Apple had a September event for the Apple Watch and iPad, an October event for the iPhone 12 and HomePod and another October event for its first Apple Silicon Macs.

However, Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman said in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that he wouldn’t expect a third event from Apple this year. The information appears to be in the Q&A section, so you won’t be able to see it if you’re a free subscriber. 9to5Mac shared the quote, which you can read below:

“I wouldn’t expect a third event this year or any other major announcements. Apple held three events last year because Covid-19 caused delays and disrupted its schedule. If Apple had any more Macs to launch this year, it would have announced them this past week—even if they wouldn’t be shipping until later this year. There’s really nothing else left of substance in the road map that would be ready for 2021. Instead, look for a larger Apple Silicon iMac, new Mac mini, new iPhone SE and new iPad Pro after 2022 gets underway.”

Frankly, it makes a lot of sense. This fall, Apple has announced new iPhones, the Apple Watch Series 7, a new iPad mini and base-level iPad, new MacBook Pros and new AirPods. The only other things we’re expecting are a new iPhone SE, an Apple Silicon iMac aimed at pros and a new iPad Pro. As Gurman said, if those were ready, Apple probably would have already announced them.

Moreover, Gurman notes in the newsletter that we should expect a new MacBook Air in roughly six to eight months. The new Air will sport an ‘M2’ chip sporting more graphics cores than the M1, but the same number of computing cores likely at a faster clock speed. In other words, there are still exciting announcements on the horizon, but don’t expect them until next year.

Next iPhone SE rumoured to feature same design, but 5G and Apple’s A15 chip

Apple’s 3rd-generation iPhone SE will likely look very similar to its predecessor if a recent rumour from Japanese blog Macotakara is accurate.

If the report is accurate, this means that the next iPhone SE will feature the same 4.7-inch LCD display and physical Touch ID Home Button, with most of the upgrades happening inside the smartphone. This includes Apple’s powerful new A15 chip and 5G connectivity support.

The publication says that Apple plans to start producing the new iPhone SE in December and ship it to customers in 2022. This launch lineup makes sense given Apple typically releases the SE version of its iPhones in the spring.

There are some slightly older rumours indicating that Apple will revamp the iPhone SE with a larger 5.5-inch screen and a side Touch ID button in the form of an iPhone SE Plus, but it’s been several months since we’ve seen any reports regarding this redesign.

Apple’s last iPhone SE refresh was back in 2020. For more on the iPhone SE (2020), check out my review of the smartphone.

Now might be your last chance to pick up a discontinued iPhone XR

Now that Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone 13 lineup and pre-orders are in full swing, some older iPhone models are receiving a price slash.

First shared by RedFlagDeals user ‘DV1705,’ the Square One Apple Store in Mississauga, Ontario, is currently offering the 64GB iPhone XR for $699 and the 64GB iPhone 11 for $679. This isn’t a store-specific deal, and the two devices should be discounted in every Apple Store in Canada.

Considering that the iPhone XR has been discontinued to make way for the new iPhone 13 lineup, I suspect Apple has discounted the limited number of devices it has left in stock for the XR. It’s worth noting that the iPhone XR is no longer available on Apple’s web store, and to get one, you’ll have to tread down to your nearest Apple Store. In theory, this could mean that stores have the iPhone 12 Pro discounted, as it too was removed from the web store to make way for the 13 series.

However, the 64 GB iPhone 11 is still available on the web store, starting at $679, marking a $170 price slash from the previous $849 price tag. Further, the 128GB storage option is available too, for $749, marking a $170 discount from the previous $919 price tag. Head to your nearest Apple Store, or visit the webstore to purchase the iPhone 11 starting at $679.

Further, the iPhone SE has been discounted too, with its 64GB and 128GB storage models selling for $569 and $639, respectively, on Apple’s website.

If you’ve been wanting to pick up a new iPhone but don’t want to pay top dollar for the latest offerings, the discounted iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone SE are great options.
