Relive the iPod’s glory days with this web-based music player

Have you ever wanted to revisit the iPod but don’t want to shell out hundreds of dollars for the OG MP3 player on eBay? Well, then, this app is for you.

This throwback, web-based iPod music player first appeared in 2021, but it recently resurfaced thanks to TikTok user @Martijncales.

The browser app features a spot-on emulation of the classic iPod, including its iconic click wheel navigation and ‘Cover Flow’ UI system that allows you to flip through music like a virtual jukebox.

Adding a dash of modernity to the retro browser app, you can log in with Spotify or Apple Music to access your respective libraries directly through the player.

The entire experience is a little silly and feels clunky by modern standards, but that’s the whole point. There’s even a decent Brick Breaker knock-off called Brick that attempts to recreate the original classic.

Given this app has been around for over a year now, it’s unlikely Apple has plans to pull it (or maybe it just hasn’t hit the tech giant’s radar yet). The Cupertino, California-based company has killed off similar platforms in the past, including Rewound, an iOS music-playing app that turned the iPhone into an iPod Classic.

Check out the app created by developer Tanner Villarete here.

iPod Touch now sold out in Canada, following Apple’s discontinuation announcement

Mere days after Apple announced its plans to discontinue the iPod, the remaining supplies of the iPod Touch have now been depleted in Canada. Looking on Apple’s website, stock of its beloved iPod line is now unavailable in-store and online.

We’ve officially reached the end of an era in tech and for Apple. The iPod line was revolutionary not only for music players of the time but also as a predecessor to the iPhone. This week, Apple confirmed that the device would be available “while supplies last.” Unsurprising, customers must have dove at the chance to obtain the last remaining iPod Touch devices available through Apple.

The iPod was first introduced in 2001 with the now-iconic Clickwheel. The company continued to iterate on the product, introducing new models for the iPod over the years. The iPod Touch, which would go on to be the last remaining iPod supported, was first launched on September 14, 2007. Over the years, the iPod Touch received seven generational refreshes. It the last released on May 28, 2019.

Apple supported the iPod Touch, despite the natural increase in iPhone users. At the time Apple announced its sunsetting of the iPod, the website offered the iPod Touch with three storage options: 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Six colours were also available: Space Grey, Silver, Pink, Blue, Gold, and Product Red.

With the iPod Touch now unavailable to purchase on Apple’s website and in-store, the last remaining hope in purchasing one may rely on third-party shops and websites. Given that the cheapest option in Canada ran for $249, the price to purchase one may rise exponentially due to its scarcity.

Multitasking multimedia increases child’s levels of inactivity?

Children raised in a multitasking world filled with laptops, iPads, smartphones, video games and televisions could be at even greater risk of physical inactivity and obesity, according to a new study reported by the Daily Mail.

Researchers at Bristol University in the U.K. surveyed 63 ten and 11-year-olds about their multimedia use. They found that most of these children are quite at ease using multiple devices at the same time, such as texting with friends during television commercials or using their handheld game system to send instant messages while they play on the computer.

"Health campaigns recommend reducing the amount of time children spend watching TV. However, the children in this study often had access to at least five different devices at any one time, and many of these devices were portable," explained study author Dr. Russ Jago.

"This meant children were able to move the equipment between their bedrooms and family rooms, depending on whether they wanted privacy or company. This suggests that we need to work with families to develop strategies to limit the overall time spent multi-screen viewing wherever it occurs within the home."

Live shows, acoustic recordings and CD-quality digital downloads are among the plethora of goodies now available through Pixies’ newly-launched mobile app, reports ClashMusic.

Designed for iPhone and Android, the app offers fans the ability to stream the rare Purple Tape (a 2002 EP of outtakes from their original 17-track demo), as well as an exclusive acoustic show.

Pixies have been on the road since 2009 celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1989 classic, Doolittle. An entire generation effected by iPod-itis?

Once considered only an issue for the middle-aged and elderly, tinnitus – a ringing in the ears – has increased dramatically among young music lovers in the last two years according to top audiologist Dr Tony Kay, reports the Daily Mail.

Hearing loss has become so common among young people, doctors have dubbed the phenomenon ‘iPod-it is.’ Typically, young people are listening to their music at high volumes for long periods of time without realizing the irreparable damage they are doing to their hearing.

Often "iPod-itis" sufferers use their personal music players daily, and increase the volume, particularly on commuter trains, to drown out background noise.

Also, noise levels in clubs can hit around 100 decibels and anything higher than 85 can cause serious damage – so earplugs are recommended. If not properly treated, tinnitus can lead to deafness later. With the newest personal music players, this may affect many people down the road, and at a much earlier age than usual.

Your iPad can help you control your fear of flying

Whether you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or the brand new iPad, there are now some applications available to help you overcome your stress and fear of flying.

These machines, which can only be opened at altitudes over 10,000 feet, can generally receive all sorts of applications. A company called Mental Workout did not miss the opportunity to develop one to help nervous passengers manage the sometimes overwhelming stress that strikes when flying high in the sky and passing through some turbulence.

The Flying Without Fear application, developed jointly with Virgin Airlines, offers a condensed version of the Fear of Flying course already available at Virgin. It uses video as well as audio and has a section of frequently asked questions which are geared to help you understand what happens in your head to cause the fright. There’s an explanation of what turbulence is and even what happens if both engines shut down. The application costs $4.99 and is sold on the Apple iTunes Store.

Another application that can help you with your fear of flying is Get Rid of Your Fear of Flying with Prof. McMurphy Subliminal Techniques. The application asks you simply to focus on the centre of your screen while it displays all kinds of images using techniques that combine the binaural and subliminal. The application has a free LITE version and another, more complete version that sells for $2.99.

Stay tuned as more and more applications are added to Apple’s online store.

iPod Leaves Big Footprint on 2009

Among the events that have marked the music world in the past 10 years, the editors of Billboard magazine deemed the launch of the iPod onto the market as one of the most monumental and revolutionary in the industry.

The birth of the mp3 player even surpassed the freak death of King of Pop Michael Jackson, who died on June 25, just weeks before he was to kick off his This Is It concert series in London, which was intended to be the last shows of his career.

In third position is another event that has changed the face of the music world; the invasion of reality talent shows such as American Idol, where new stars are discovered on television, attracting millions of viewers. Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood turned into superstars, thanks to American Idol, while England gave us Leona Lewis and Britain’s Got Talent‘s most recent celeb, Susan Boyle.

The Billboard list also highlighted Radiohead’s method of distributing their last disc, In Rainbows, where buyers can negotiate the amount they want to pay to download the album. This way of connecting between a group and their fans will also change the way albums are sold.

The Palace of Versailles Gets an iPhone App

One of the most popular iPhone/iPod applications of 2009 was one that would allow a person to walk through the Louvre Museum in Paris and gain access to information on several items from the museum’s collection, at the touch of the fingertips.

France is now offering a new application for the popular Apple gadgets that will indulge the user in a visit to one of the country’s most prestigious landmarks, the Palace of Versailles, which welcomed the royal family before the French Revolution.

The application, which is expected to be available in March directly from the iTunes online store, will feature a guided audio tour in the gardens of the chateau with photos, videos and information.

Through the geolocalized iPhone or iPod, the visitor will be guided through a 2-hour, 30-minute tour of the property’s gardens. At each important point of interest, the application will provide photos, text and informative videos.

Once the tour is over, the tourist will have access to a personal space on the Internet where they can share photos and comments from the visit.
