Apple to add several old iPod models to obsolete list later this month

Several old Apple iPod models will be made obsolete later this month.

Apple products that haven’t been distributed for sale for more than seven years are considered obsolete, like the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Now, the last iPod Nano (seventh-gen), select models of the last iPod shuffle (late 2012 model) and the fifth-generation iPod touch (fifth-gen) are being added to the obsolete list on September 30th, marking the end of hardware service repair for the device, according to a memo sent to service providers obtained by MacRumors.

It’s worth noting that the 16GB fifth-generation iPod is already marked as obsolete, and now the 32GB and 64GB storage variants will join the list.

Apple’s iPod Nano and iPod shuffle were discontinued back in 2017, whereas the iPod touch was discontinued earlier this year.

iPod Touch now sold out in Canada, following Apple’s discontinuation announcement

Mere days after Apple announced its plans to discontinue the iPod, the remaining supplies of the iPod Touch have now been depleted in Canada. Looking on Apple’s website, stock of its beloved iPod line is now unavailable in-store and online.

We’ve officially reached the end of an era in tech and for Apple. The iPod line was revolutionary not only for music players of the time but also as a predecessor to the iPhone. This week, Apple confirmed that the device would be available “while supplies last.” Unsurprising, customers must have dove at the chance to obtain the last remaining iPod Touch devices available through Apple.

The iPod was first introduced in 2001 with the now-iconic Clickwheel. The company continued to iterate on the product, introducing new models for the iPod over the years. The iPod Touch, which would go on to be the last remaining iPod supported, was first launched on September 14, 2007. Over the years, the iPod Touch received seven generational refreshes. It the last released on May 28, 2019.

Apple supported the iPod Touch, despite the natural increase in iPhone users. At the time Apple announced its sunsetting of the iPod, the website offered the iPod Touch with three storage options: 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Six colours were also available: Space Grey, Silver, Pink, Blue, Gold, and Product Red.

With the iPod Touch now unavailable to purchase on Apple’s website and in-store, the last remaining hope in purchasing one may rely on third-party shops and websites. Given that the cheapest option in Canada ran for $249, the price to purchase one may rise exponentially due to its scarcity.

Apple kills off iPod line after 20 years

Apple has confirmed that it’s discontinuing its iconic iPod line after 20 years.

In a recent press release, the tech giant says that the current iPod Touch will be available “while supplies last.” Apple goes on to say that “the spirit of the iPod lives on” in its various devices that play music, including the iPhone, iPad and the HomePod mini.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did, impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

iPod

Apple first released the monochrome iPod with a Clickwheel back in 2001, and it wasn’t until 2005 that the music player featured a colour display. The tech giant also dropped several versions of the iPod over the years, including the iPod Shuffle, the iPod Mini, iPod Nano (this model was huge at my high school) and the iPod Touch.

The last version of the music player, the 7th-gen iPod Touch equipped with an A10 chip, released back in May 2019 to very little fanfare and was only featured in a brief press release.

In an era where most people play music from their smartphone, it’s been clear for several years that the iPod line’s death was coming. Still, this officially marks the end of an era for Apple.
