Montreal’s EA Motive working on single-player Iron Man game

A brand-new Iron Man game is officially in development at Montreal-based EA Motive.

In a press release, EA described the game as “single-player, third-person, action-adventure” featuring an “original narrative” focused on Tony Stark and his armoured alter ego. EA has come under fire in the past for emphasizing multiplayer over single-player, so the confirmation that the currently untitled Iron Man game is a narrative-driven solo experience will certainly be reassuring for many.

Notably, the project is being overseen by executive producer Olivier Proulx, who most recently worked on Eidos Montreal’s critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the untitled Iron Man game is said to be in “early development,” meaning it’s likely years from an actual release.

Interestingly, we’ve never gotten a big-budget Iron Man game in the vein of Marvel’s Spider-Man or Batman: Arkham, despite the character’s massive popularity in the past 10-plus years due to Robert Downey, Jr.’s version of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sega did release poorly received two licensed games based on the first two Iron Man films, but otherwise, the closest thing to an “Iron Man game” came in 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers.

In addition to Iron Man, Motive is working on a remake of the original Dead Space game, set for release on January 27th, 2023. The Canadian developer previously worked on 2020’s Star Wars: Squadrons and the single-player campaign for 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Iron Man is just one of several Marvel games that are currently in development. Some of what we know about includes PlayStation-owned Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine and Uncharted creator Amy Hennig’s Captain America and Black Panther team-up title for Skydance. It’s rumoured that EA is also working on a Black Panther game, although nothing has been confirmed.

Director Jon Favreau withdraws from Iron Man

American actor-director Jon Favreau has announced his withdrawal from the Iron Man franchise to focus on directing the Magic Kingdom, which will be shot in the famous Disney theme park.

"Marvel and I both came of age together," Favreau said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in."

However, this is not a definitive break with Marvel Studios, as the director remains a producer for The Avengers, due out May 4, 2012. He may even remain as executive producer on Iron Man 3 and resume his supporting role as Happy Hogan, Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) chauffeur.

Favreau confirmed the news with a tweet today: “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best."

For now, Jon Favreau is busy directing Cowboys and Aliens starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde due out July 29, 2011.

Fewer Fans for Gwyneth Paltrow

It seems that the Oscar winner didn’t make many friends on the set of the film, in which she plays Pepper Potts, reports Fox411.

Several members of the team felt that the actress was so unbearable that they were secretly hoping that she’d be replaced in the film, or her character killed off.

"Gwyneth is extremely cool at work. She’s just a step above professional, too snobby.  Gwyneth is not friendly to anyone, and tends to make people feel awkward and uncomfortable," said a member of the crew.

The source also confirmed that Paltrow didn’t have a great working relationship with her co-star, Scarlett Johansson.  "She wasn’t outright rude to Scarlett, she just didn’t ever speak to her. Gwyneth went out of her way to avoid Scarlett, and they had zero contact, at Gwyneth’s choosing."

For three weeks, the star adheres to a strict detoxification after gaining a few pounds.

The mother of two wrote on her site, "This programme allowed me to work and exercise regularly, some think I cannot do if I am on a liquid only detox. I followed it to the letter and I feel pure and happy and much lighter."

Gwyneth Paltrow is currently filming the Iron Man sequel with Robert Downey Jr.  The film is set to be released in May 2010.

Is Gwyneth Paltrow Jealous?

According to The Sun, the 36-year-old actress was annoyed with all the attention being paid to Johansson on the set of Iron Man 2.

"Gwyneth has found Scarlett very demanding for the attention of the crew. It’s not a happy set and Gwyneth has become very frustrated with Scarlett. They come from different worlds and have completely different styles," said a source.

Apparently, the mood on the set has been rather dark. "Gwyneth’s had to live with that and she has been very professional, but she and Scarlett haven’t developed a friendship on the shoot, which is almost at the halfway point," added the source, who thinks that Emily Blunt would have been the better choice for Johansson’s role.

Terrence Howard Still Holding Grudges

According to Terrence Howard, who played Jim Rhodes in the first Iron Man instalmentMarvel made a big mistake by replacing him with Don Cheadle.

"Marvel made a choice, and it was a very, very bad choice. They didn’t keep their word. They didn’t honour my contract," the actor told Parade magazine.

Howard also explained how the producers for Iron Man 2 made life impossible for the film’s leading actors, i.e. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, during negotiations for their return to the second adventure.

Despite everything, Terrence Howard wished his co-star in the film Crash good luck in the role, saying, "I want to see Don Cheadle become me. No, I want him to do better than me."
