Beatles Compilation Disc Is Best Seller

Although the compilation album was released several decades after the split of the Fab Four, the album 1 topped the charts as the highest selling disc of the decade.  An impressive 11 448 000 copies were sold during the past ten years.

However, when looking at the charts of the decade, Eminem gets to wear the title of artist of the decade.  The rapper alone had two albums in the top ten list of best sellers, purchased by 32.2 million buyers.  The Marshall Mathers LP was listed as the fourth best-selling album of the decade, with 10 195 000 copies sold, and fifth place went to Eminem Show, which sold 9 789 000 copies.

Two other albums reached the milestone of selling over 10 million copies.  NSync’s disc, No Strings Attached, sold 11 111 000 copies, while Norah Jones sold 10 523 000 copies of her album, Come Away With Me.

While digital stores, such as iTunes, began to emerge in the second half of the decade, records were also tallied in the digital world, which was clearly taken over by Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.

No Deal Reached Between the Beatles and iTunes

Rumours have been brewing about a historic contract in the works to make Beatles songs available for downloading on iTunes.

Ernesto Schmitt, catalogue president at EMI, told the Financial Times that no contract has been signed. "Conversations between Apple and EMI are ongoing and we look forward to the day when we can make music available digitally. But it’s not tomorrow," he stressed.

Paul McCartney would like to see the deal happen, but he blames EMI for slowing down negotiations.

Beatles Fans Have to Keep Waiting

During a press conference in London yesterday (November 24), Paul McCartney confirmed that talks between EMI and Apple Records have halted.

The 66-year-old singer explained, “When it’s something as big as the Beatles, it’s heavy negotiations. We’re [the band members and their estates] very for it, but there are a couple of sticking points. It’s stalled. No change there then!”

McCartney didn’t elaborate on the points of disagreement between the two sides, but Rolling Stone believes that it could be iTunes’ pricing structure that creates a problem for Apple Records.

Last March, it seemed that a deal was nearly reached between the two companies.

AC/DC Boycotts iTunes

The flamboyant guitarist of the Australian group told the Daily Telegraph the reasons why we won’t be seeing AC/DC material on the music downloading giant.

"We believe the songs on any of our albums belong together. If we were on iTunes, we know a certain percentage of people would only download two or three songs from the album," Angus Young said.

The musician admitted that the group received several requests for their songs to become available on iTunes, but AC/DC will not give into pressure from the music industry.

"Since iTunes came into existence, we’ve actually increased our back catalogue sales without being on the site," Young revealed.

Starting October 20, AC/DC fans can get their hands on their new album, Black Ice, however not via iTunes.

The Cure Calls a Boycott

FemaleFirst reports that the band The Cure is asking their fans to boycott the purchase of files from the music downloading site iTunes.

Singer Robert Smith is telling listeners not to buy their songs from the EP Hypnagogic States on the site.

He doesn’t agree with the price that is charged and finds it completely absurd that the EP is being sold at $14.79.

The EP Hypnagogic States has five remixes of four singles from the group’s next album, 4:13 Dream, on which there are collaborations with Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy.

The Cure sent a letter to administrators at iTunes expressing their adamant disapproval.

Kid Rock Boycotts iTunes

According to a report from FemaleFirst, the singer refuses to give iTunes the permission to sell his songs, because he says that the owners of the company do not adequately compensate artists.

He stated, "It’s based on an old system where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don’t give it to the artists."

Despite it all, Kid Rock admitted that his music would probably be sold through an online retailer one day.

Agreement Between iTunes and the Beatles

Apple and iTunes have obtained the rights to distribute not only the music of the group, but also the music of all four Beatles’ solo careers, reported PC World.

Apple made a 400 million dollar deal with Paul McCartney so that fans can download the songs of their choice by the Fab Four on iTunes.

RollingStone.com stated that Ringo Starr and the estates for John Lennon and George Harrison will also be getting a cut.  A date has not been established for the digital release of the albums.

Purple Violets To Be Released on iTunes

The contract between Apple and the actor/director marks a change in the cinema world.  Purple Violets will not be released in theatres, and will instead go straight to iTunes.

The drama, which stars Selma Blair, Edward Burns, Debra Messing and Patrick Wilson, will be available for downloading on November 20 for a price of $14.99 US.  Burns, who also directed the film, explained his unconventional choice, "The specialized movie business has changed so dramatically in the last five years. These small, talky movies have a hard time finding an audience theatrically, so you need to adapt.  There are still people who want to see this nontraditional type of film, and now there are nontraditional ways to get them out there."

The first film to be made available on iTunes was High School Musical last year.  Since then, the site’s catalog has increased to 500 feature films.
