Avatar: The Way of Water digital release arrives March 28th

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is a bonafide box office success. After becoming the third-highest-grossing film of all time, the sequel to the 2009 sensation is getting a digital release this month.

On March 28th, the Avatar sequel will be available to purchase digitally. Paid downloads of Avatar: The Way of Water will be available across platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, Microsoft Films & TV, and more.

The Avatar sequel was helmed by James Cameron, who also directed the original film. Alongside Cameron, the film was written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The movie stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and more.

Avatar: The Way of Water is also arriving digitally with a ton of extras. In fact, there is over the same amount of bonus content as the nearly three-hour movie. Fans of the film can watch a feature on how Cameron and his crew created the world of Pandora, its creatures, and its environments. Fans can also look forward to learning more about how the stunt team used a performance tank for the many underwater sequences.

The bonus footage also spotlights the FX of the film. Using Wētā FX, Cameron and his team created uncanny facial performances, environments, and never-before-seen creatures. There are also spotlight features dedicated to the returning cast as well as the new generation of Avatar stars, including Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and Jack Champion.

Avatar: The Way of Water was released theatrically on December 15th, 2023. It has since reaped a global box office of $2.28 billion. Cameron’s franchise now holds two of the three top-grossing spots. Avatar sits at the number one spot with a box office of $2.9 billion. Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame is the third with $2.79 billion at the box office.

Currently, there’s no word on when a Bluray release nor Disney+ streaming option will be available.

Two of the Oscars Best Picture nominees were directed by Canadians

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the full list of nominees for this year’s Academy Awards, and Canada made quite a big appearance.

Notably, two of the ten Best Picture nominees were directed by Canadians: Avatar: The Way of Water (Kapuskasing, Ontario’s James Cameron) and Women Talking (Toronto’s Sarah Polley). As a producer on The Way of Water, this means Cameron himself is one of the people up for the award, while Polley — who isn’t a producer on Women Talking — scored a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. It’s also worth noting that Women Talking is based the eponymous 2018 novel by Steinbach, Manitoba’s Miriam Toews.

It should be noted that Avatar: The Way of Water and Women Talking were both released in theatres in December so they’re not yet available to stream at home.

The eight other Best Picture nominees are All Quiet on the Western Front (notably, a Netflix film), The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At OnceThe Fabelmans, TárTop Gun: Maverick and Triangle of Sadness.

Meanwhile, Pixar’s Turning Red, which was co-written and directed by Toronto’s Domee Shi, is up for Best Animated Feature. Also nominated in that category is The Sea Beast, which was directed by Waterloo, Ontario-raised Chris Williams. Elsewhere in the field of animation, The Flying Sailor from Calgary’s Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis is nominated for Best Animated Short.

Acting-wise, American-Canadian Brendan Fraser snagged a nomination for Best Actor for The Whale. (Fraser was born in the U.S. to Canadian parents and spent some of his formative years in Toronto.)

The full list of this year’s nominees can be found here. The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12th, 2023.

Where to stream James Cameron’s Avatar in Canada before The Way of Water

Thirteen years after the release of Avatar, James Cameron is finally back with a sequel, The Way of Water.

It’s the first of the Canadian filmmaker’s four planned follow-ups to the highest-grossing movie of all time, and it’s set to be a massive blockbuster. While it remains to be seen how well it will perform, given its debatable lack of cultural relevance and the long gap between the previous film, it’s gotten rave reviews following its December 6th premiere.

Speaking of how long it’s been since that first film, though, you might have forgotten much of it or simply want to revisit Cameron’s world of Pandora. With that in mind, you can stream it on Disney+ Canada. The movie was temporarily removed from the service as part of a limited 4K theatrical re-release in September, but it’s since returned on time for The Way of Water.

The Way of Water will open in theatres on December 16th.

Avatar: The Way of Water uses crazy tech, but does it look better or worse?

James Cameron has been hyping up his Avatar saga a lot lately, but the more I watch the trailers for Avatar: The Way of Water, the less I believe this movie will break as many boundaries as the first.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an Avatar hater. I enjoyed the first movie and loved how it pushed the special effects and CGI industry. The overarching plot was trite, but the world, the action and the intense filmmaking drew me in.

As the trailers for The Way of Water have been released, I’ve realized I expected the movie to look nearly as good as real life, and while it’s still visually impressive, some characters have crossed into the uncanny valley.

Several shots are outstanding, and there’s no denying that the water physics are top-notch. Even the reflective properties of water seem to be taken into account in this film, albeit there’s maybe a little too much on characters’ skin. The environment is also stunning, with realistic rocks, foliage and shadows.

But the characters’ faces are undeniably bizarre. I don’t want to call them unnatural because the problem is that they look too natural, in some respects. The human elements shine through more clearly in The Way of Water, and while it might help the actors relay a more believable digital performance, it seems too much like a human, which adds an odd aura to the film. There’s something about how the jaw structure seems to be the same as the real actors, making them appear less cat-like than in the first film.

Beyond that, The Way of the Water‘s story focuses more on the family and children of the main characters from the first film. These younger Na’vi have less pronounced facial features, making their cat-esque noses look even more human, breaking the effect. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but this beautiful CG world feels broken by a human face peering through the CGI makeup.

In a recent interview with GQ, The Way of Water director says that his team used a variety of cameras to film the actors performing the motions to get actual real-life movement and human interactions. That footage was then handed off to effects company Wētā to paint the world on top of. It’s an interesting approach and has reportedly resulted in The Way of Water becoming one of the most expensive movies ever made.

I’m sure once it hits theatres, the film will hold up and look great, but with all the hype surrounding the next generation of Avatar films, it has a lot to live up to.

Disney releases official Avatar 2 trailer online

The first official trailer for the long-awaited Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, has been released online.

The trailer for The Way of Water made its debut over the weekend in theatres exclusively with screenings of fellow Disney film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but now, it’s being made available on the web for everyone.

The trailer features a lot of miscellaneous shots without much dialogue, so you may not glean too much about the actual story. Here’s the official synopsis, for reference:

“Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

Canada’s own James Cameron has returned to direct and co-writer The Way of Water, and it’s the first of four sequels he’s currently working on. The Way of Water will hit theatres this December, with its three untitled sequels dropping in December 2024, December 2026 and December 2028, respectively.

Cameron’s original Avatar opened in theatres way back in December 2009. The film is streaming on Disney+ in Canada.

Tom Arnold and Arnold Schwarzenegger back Eliza Dushku

Tom Arnold and Arnold Schwarzenegger would have "done something" if they’d known about Eliza Dushku’s alleged abuse ordeal.

The 37-year-old actress recently claimed she was assaulted by ‘True Lies’ stunt co-ordinator, Joel Kramer, when she was just 12 years old, and now her co-stars in the 1994 movie have praised her for speaking out and promised they’d have helped at the time if they had known.

Tom tweeted: "I promise you @JimCameron @Schwarzenegger @jamieleecurtis would’ve done something too. We all love & are proud of @elizadushku #metoo (sic)"

In response, Arnold, 70, retweeted the 58-year-old actor’s post and agreed: Tom", you bet your ass all of us would have done something.

"I’m shocked and saddened for Eliza but I am also proud of her – beyond being a great talent and an amazing woman, she is so courageous."

The two men spoke out after another star in the movie, Jamie Lee Curtis, confirmed Eliza had previously confided in her about the alleged abuse – which Kramer has branded "atrocious lies" – and admitted she is still "shocked and saddened" by her story.

She said: "She had shared that story with me privately a few years ago. I was shocked and saddened then and still am today. We have all started to awaken to the fact that the terrible abuses now commonplace in daily news reports have been going on for a very long time.

"Unconscionably, those reports frequently come along with claims by the perpetrators that, as adults, those perpetrated against had some part in it … Eliza’s story has now awakened us from our denial slumber to a new, horrific reality. The abuse of children."

The 59-year-old actress described Joel’s alleged actions as "terrible", and called for the truth to be discovered so that Hollywood could continue to push for change.

In a piece written for the Huffington Post, she wrote: "Many of us involved in ‘True Lies’ were parents. Jim, Arnold and myself. Parents of daughters. What allegedly happened to Eliza, away from the safety net of all of us and our purview is a terrible, terrible thing to learn about and have to reconcile.

"The truth will set us all free. Hopefully that freedom will bring a new ability to call out abuse and, when that abuse occurs, to have swift and consistent action, so that no one again will have to wait 25 years for their truth to be heard."

And the movie’s director, James Cameron, insisted he would have shown "no mercy" if he’d known about the alleged incident at the time.

He said: "Directors are historically pretty oblivious to the interpersonal things that are happening on their set because they’re focused and are the worst offenders at being focused on ‘What I’m doing creatively.’

"Had I known about it, there would have been no mercy. Now especially, I have daughters. There’s really no mercy now."

In an open letter on her social media account, Eliza claimed she was "groomed" by the stunt expert for months before going to his hotel room, where he "rubbed" his near-naked body against her.

She also alleged she was left with broken ribs after a stunt went wrong, shortly after a "strong adult" friend confronted Kramer about her allegations.

But the stunt co-ordinator insists her claims are not true.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver still not divorced

Arnold Schwarzenegger is still not divorced from his estranged spouse Maria Shriver, despite her filing for divorce in 2011.

The Hollywood legend married the broadcast journalist back in 1986, but after 25 years of marriage, Maria decided she wanted to leave her husband after news spread that he had fathered his now 20-year-old son Joseph Baena with their housekeeper Mildred Baena.

However, despite being apart for six years, in an interview with Harvey Levin for Fox News’ ‘OBJECTified’ – a show which looks at the lives of celebrities – it was revealed the couple still haven’t officially separated.

When Maria filed for divorce their two sons Patrick, 24, and Christopher, 20, were both minors, but now they are both adults so custody isn’t an issue, TMZ reports.

Schwarzenegger has also has daughters Katherine, 27, and Christina, 26, with his estranged wife.

It’s also reported that the couple currently don’t have a prenup, and during their 25-year marriage they amassed a $400 million fortune.

The actor previously admitted he wishes he could go back in time to stop himself having the affair.

The 70-year-old actor’s marriage to Maria broke down when he admitted he had had Joseph with Mildred, and while he knows he can’t change the past, he is still trying to move on from his mistake.

Speaking last year, he said: "You do think about it every so often. And I can beat myself up as much as I want — it’s not gonna change the situation. So the key thing is, how do you move forward? How do you have a great relationship with your kids?

"You can’t go back — if I could, in reality, be Terminator, of course I would go back in time and would say, ‘Arnold … no.’

"You know, it’s always easy to be smart in hindsight. That’s not the way it works."

Kate Winslet never had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio

Kate Winslet was never attracted to Leonardo DiCaprio when the pair filmed ‘Titanic’ together.

The pair played doomed lovers Rose Dewitt Bukater and Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s 1997 disaster epic, but although their alter egos were struck by Cupid, Winslet didn’t develop a little crush on DiCaprio – who is still one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors.

But Kate insists the lack of a romantic spark between them was a good thing because it has allowed them to maintain a friendship which has lasted 20 years.

In an interview on UK TV show ‘Lorraine’, she revealed: "It was seven months of very intense work, we were both really very young. And luckily, and this was the fortunate thing, we never fancied each other! I know that’s really annoying to hear, sorry. We really never did. So it did mean that we were able to have this … be able to tease each other, which we still do, which is really amazing."

Two decades on, ‘Titanic’ – which won 11 Academy Awards including the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for Cameron – is gaining a new audience of fans, including Kate’s own children and their friends who can quote the film’s famous lines.

The 41-year-old British beauty – who has 16-year-old daughter Mia with her first husband Jim Threapleton, 13-year-old son Joe with second husband Sam Mendes and three-year-old son Bear with her current spouse Ned Rocknroll – said: "The lovely thing about ‘Titanic’ for me now, my children and their friends … their friends say, ‘Oh I love the bit in ‘Titanic’ when you did…’ they are reciting lines from ‘Titanic’ that, I mean, I’ve long forgotten!

"I’m like, ‘Oh my God, is that really what I said?’ And they’re like, ‘Then Jack does this and then Rose does this…’ and I’m like, ‘Goodness!’ I say to them, ‘You weren’t born when that film was made’, which makes me feel very old. There’s another generation of children who are enjoying it and loving it for the first time. It’s like ‘Mary Poppins’, I like to think."

O. J. Simpson was wanted as the Terminator

James Cameron has revealed that O. J. Simpson was almost cast as the Terminator in his cult classic sci-fi film.

The 63-year-old director launched the acclaimed franchise in 1984 with Arnold Schwarzenegger cast in the iconic role as the killer T-800 cybernetic android sent from the future to murder Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), a part he has reprised numerous times and is famous for the "I’ll be back" catchphrase.

But originally, Orion Pictures co-founder Mike Medavoy offered the part to now disgraced former NFL player and actor Simpson, who infamously was found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and restaurant waiter Ron Goldman in 1995.

It was Cameron who stopped the casting, pointing out it could alienate audiences to have an African American man play a character intent on murdering a white woman, even though it was a fictional story about a time-travelling cyborg.

Speaking to The Guardian newspaper, Cameron recalled: "Mike Medavoy at Orion called me up one night and said, ‘I just went to this party and I got the movie cast!’ Now, of course, every filmmaker loves to hear that some douche executive has cast your movie for you. And he said, ‘OK, O. J. Simpson for the Terminator.’ I was like, ‘Hey Mike, Bad idea! You’re going to have this black athlete chasing this white girl around LA with a fricking knife and a gun? We’re not doing that.’

"Which was fortunate, but also unfortunate in that life ended up imitating art there."

Famous for his work in the science-fiction genre, Cameron is currently making four sequels to his hit 2009 movie ‘Avatar’ and he admits what keeps him creatively interested is doing things that "haven’t been done before".

The ‘Aliens’ filmmaker said: "I look for things that haven’t been done. I like finding that gap between everything that hasn’t been done and what I think can be done. Everything I’ve ever done has been based on that little gap: every expedition, every piece of robotics that we built, every camera system, the deep-ocean stuff – it all falls onto that same pattern."
