Justin Bieber and Arcade Fire win Webby Awards

Canadian musicians Justin Bieber and Arcade Fire were two of the acts honored at the 2011 Webby Awards yesterday (May 3), reports Billboard.

Bieber took home the People’s Voice award for best comedy video award in recognition of his April Fool’s Day 2010 takeover of popular comedy website Funny or Die! The prank saw the website rebranded Bieber or Die, with news that the pop star had bought the website and would "do with it whatever his tiny little heart desires."

Montreal-based band Arcade Fire won both the Webby and the People’s Voice awards for best experimental and weird short video, in honor of their trippy music video-interactive film experience The Wilderness Downtown. Set to their single We Used to Wait, the interactive video uses HTML5 technology and Google Maps to create a 3D rendering of the viewer’s hometown.

Other notable Webby winners include Snoop Dogg and LL Cool J, who took home the statue for best branded entertainment for their Ultimate Halo Smack Down collaboration.

Comedian Zach Galifianakis, late-night talk-show host Conan O’Brien and actor Jim Carrey were also honored at the ceremony.

Chris Brown joins Justin Bieber on stage

Justin Bieber’s Australian concertgoers were in for a surprise last night (April 28), when the pop star invited Chris Brown to join him on stage for a duet, reports Teen Music.

Just as Bieber was finishing up his solo song With You, Brown swept out onto the stage to the delight of fans, and joined the pop star in singing their collaborative single, Look at Me Now.

Last week on Twitter, Bieber had hinted to fans that he had something special planned with Brown, leading many to speculate that there might be a duet performance in the works for one of his shows.

The first surprise for Australian fans, however, was that there was a concert at all. Rumors suggested that the show would be cancelled after Bieber injured his back wake-boarding in Indonesia last weekend. The pop star reportedly defied doctor’s orders and insisted that the show must go on.

"I don’t cancel…In route to Sydney!! THE SHOW IS ON!! I don’t let my fans down!" Bieber tweeted on Wednesday (April 27).

Rihanna an early favorite for Billboard Music Awards

Barbadian R&B artist Rihanna is sitting pretty with a whopping 18 nominations for the 2011 Billboard Music Awards in May, more than any other artist, reports Teen Music.

Eminem follows closely with 16 nominations; their Rihanna-Eminem collaboration, Love the Way You Lie, gave them both a boost, with a showing in six different categories.

Lady Gaga trails in third, a finalist in 12 categories, while Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber each scored 11 nominations.

Unlike traditional awards shows that rely on a panel of judges to select winners, the Billboard Music Awards are based on chart position from February 28, 2010 to March 1, 2011. After a four-year hiatus, the awards show returns with a live broadcast on ABC.

As well as tracking album, single and digital sales, Billboard rankings also take into account other factors like social networking presence, touring success, radio play and online streaming.

Justin Bieber sued for song royalties

For most songwriters, having one of their creations chosen by an international star, usually opens the door to increased wealth and fame. However, what happens if the songwriter isn’t paid?

Sean Hamilton and Hyuk Shin, original songwriters of One Less Lonely Girl sung by teen pop sensation Justin Bieber on his debut album My World, have still not received any royalties, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In a lawsuit filed last week, representatives for the songwriters, artist managers Vance Tate and Thomas Oliveria, claim they are entitled to 10 percent of the publishing royalties for their share of the song, estimated to be $200,000.

Working under the name A-Rex, the duo wrote the song One Less Lonely Girl in 2008. It ended up on Bieber’s first album with final credits to Hamilton and Shin as well as Usher, Ezekiel Lewis, and Balewa Muhammad.

The plaintiffs are also seeking damages for breach of contract, fraud, conversion, and copyright infringement.
