Kendrick Lamar: Hip-hop decides what’s cool

Kendrick Lamar thinks hip-hop culture determines "what’s cool and what’s not cool".

The chart-topping rapper has a deep-rooted love of hip-hop culture and Kendrick believes it is the most influential genre of music in America.

He said: "Hip-hop has always been the ultimate genre. Yeah. Even when these numbers wasn’t out. Even when the stats wasn’t out we always moved the needle. We always … we were the culture.

"You can debate me on this all day you want. We say what’s cool and what’s not cool. We say what we like."

The 30-year-old star grew up listening to the likes of Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre in Compton, where hip-hop music dominated the airwaves of local radio stations.

And in retrospect, Kendrick is amazed that anyone ever doubted the longevity of the genre.

Speaking to Forbes magazine, Kendrick recalled: "My mom told me, I couldn’t believe when she told me this. She said 1987, the year I was born, [people were saying] hip-hop was going to last six months to a year … that tripped me out.

"And now you fast forward and you see Jay-Z up there, you know? [Song]writers’ Hall of Fame. This is us. This is who I am. He’s from the projects. You dig what I’m saying?"

Kendrick claimed that the success of Jay and other hip-hop moguls serves to underline the ever-increasing influence of the culture.

The ‘Poetic Justice’ hitmaker said: "You look at what’s Dre done. You look at what Puff done, and you look at some of the guys that carried that mood of culture forward outside of hip-hop …

"We tell you what it ain’t, if it ain’t it. We decide that, you know? Simple as that."

Kendrick Lamar wins big at the MTV VMAs

Kendrick Lamar was the big winner at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (08.27.17).

The 30-year-old rap star won six prizes on the night, including Best Video of the Year, Best Art Direction and Best Hip-Hop, after opening the awards bash at The Forum – which was hosted by Katy Perry – with live performances of his hits ‘DNA’ and ‘HUMBLE’.

Kendrick – whose on-stage performances featured news footage of police brutality – also claimed the prizes for Best Visual Effects, Best Direction and Best Cinematography, but he lost the award for Best Artist of the Year to Ed Sheeran.

Elsewhere, Taylor Swift won the Best Collaboration award for ‘I Don’t Wanna Live Forever’, which also featured former One Direction star Zayn Malik.

But the blonde beauty did not attend the bash in person and her fans instead had to settle for the premiere of her new video ‘Look What You Made Me Do’.

Pink claimed the Video Vanguard award on the night, and she also performed a medley of her biggest hits while flying through the crowd on a car.

Girl group Fifth Harmony won the Best Pop Video prize and were presented with their gong by Paris Jackson – the daughter of pop legend Michael Jackson – who used the platform to send a message of unity.

Paris said: "If we were all able to stand up united as one, our impact would be huge. And that’s not fake news."

Meanwhile, Thirty Seconds to Mars star Jared Leto delivered a heartfelt tribute to the Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, who died last month.

Jared explained: "Chester was my friend as he was to so many and witnessing his life taught me important things, especially about working relentlessly, pursuing dreams and being kind and caring while doing it."

As with MTV’s movie and TV awards earlier this year, the bash scrapped the concept of gendered categories, meaning male and female performers competed for the same prizes.

MTV also invited transgender military members to the event following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that they would no longer be allowed to serve.

Pink to receive Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at MTV VMAs

Pink will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2017 MTV VMAs.

The 37-year-old singer – who has six-year-old daughter Willow and eight-month-old son Jameson with her husband Carey Hart – has been revealed at the recipient of this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award during the ceremony for the Video Music Awards (VMAs) on August 27.

The award is the highest honour available to artists at the awards show – which is held at the Forum in Inglewood, California – and has previously been bestowed upon the likes of Madonna, Beyoncé, and last year’s winner Rihanna.

The first Vanguard awards were presented at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, when they were scooped up by The Beatles and the late David Bowie. The award was renamed to honour the late musical icon Michael Jackson in 1991.

For Pink, it isn’t just the honour of receiving the award that she has to look forward to either, as she has also been added to the line-up of performers at the star-studded ceremony, which already includes the likes of Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, and Kendrick Lamar.

Katy Perry and The Weeknd are also set to perform on the night, and they could be in front of the audience a lot more as they both have five nominations each.

The Weeknd is up for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Editing.

He will face off against Kendrick Lamar in four of those categories, and the 30-year-old rapper has nods for four others, leading the nominations with an impressive eight.

Kendrick is also up for Best Hip Hop Video, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Choreography for the video for his hit single ‘Humble’.

Katy’s single ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ is nominated for Best Pop Video, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects, whilst her track ‘Bon Appetite’ is up for Best Art Direction.

Kendrick Lamar on Bad Blood

Kendrick Lamar had no idea his Taylor Swift collaboration ‘Bad Blood’ was written about her rumored feud with Katy Perry.

The ‘Humble’ rapper lent his talents to the 2015 hit single – taken from her hugely popular ‘1989’ album – and has claimed he wasn’t aware of the suspicions that the track was penned about the singers’ public row.

Asked if he knew about the potential subject matter, he told Rolling Stone: "No, I wasn’t aware of that, bro… No! On the record, no. Which makes it even more funny now, for sure."

Lamar admitted any kind of "real beef" is something he wants to avoid, not got involved in.

He added: "That’s far beyond my concern. I have to stay away from that, for sure. That’s some real beef."

Swift and Perry’s feud kicked off four years ago, when the latter allegedly hired backup dancers from her rival’s tour, with the ‘Shake It Off’ star hinting at the drama in a 2014 interview.

Not naming the ‘Roar’ singer directly, she said: "She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me."

Earlier this year, Perry opened up on the feud during her appearance on ‘Carpool Karaoke’.

She admitted: "There’s a situation. Honestly, it’s really like she started it, and it’s time for her to finish it."

Last month, Perry claimed she loves Swift and while they’ve clashed, she wishes her all the best on "her journey", even if they’re taking different paths.

She recently said: "I love her, I always have. We’ve had our differences but I just continue to say, ‘God bless her on her journey.’ "

Katy Perry to host MTV VMAs

Katy Perry will host this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The ‘Swish Swish’ singer – who is nominated for five of the iconic Moonman statuettes at the upcoming ceremony – will front the annual extravaganza, and also take to the stage at the Forum in California to perform on August 27.

She said in a statement: "I’ve been training with MTV in zero gravity, eating astronaut ice cream, and I’m on a group text with Buzz Aldrin and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

"Come August 27th, I’ll be ready to be your MOONWOMAN! Brace for impact, kids."

Awards ceremony bosses are delighted to have the new ‘American Idol’ judge on board to take the reins at the show.

Viacom’s head of music and music talent, global entertainment group, Bruce Gillmer, said: "We’re thrilled to have global phenomenon Katy Perry as the host and a performer at the 2017 VMAs. She is at the forefront of music culture and the perfect person to anchor this year’s show, which promises to be one of the most diverse and music-filled in VMA history."

The nominations for the VMAs were revealed earlier this week, and Kendrick Lamar scored the most nods with eight, for Video of the Year, Best Hip Hop Video, Best Cinematography, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, and Best Choreography for the video for his hit single ‘Humble’, whilst the musician himself is also up for Artist of the Year.

And he faces a lot of competition from both Katy and The Weeknd, who are the second-most nominated acts with five.

The ‘Reminder’ hitmaker will face Kendrick in the race for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Direction and Best Art Direction, whilst also being nominated for Best Editing.

Meanwhile, Katy’s single ‘Chained To The Rhythm’ is nominated for Best Pop Video, Best Direction and Best Visual Effects, whilst her track ‘Bon Appetite’ is up for Best Art Direction.

Kendrick Lamar gives disabled fan new lease of life

Kendrick Lamar has changed a disabled fan’s life by buying her a van with wheelchair access to get around.

The 30-year-old hip-hop star felt "inspired" after meeting Jennifer Phillips backstage at his Dallas show on Friday (07.14.17) where he was performing for his ‘DAMN Tour’.

After learning Jennifer is quadriplegic who injured her spinal cord in a car accident and that she had setup a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the adapted vehicle, the ‘Loyalty’ hitmaker helped the page reach $4,000, enough to get Jennifer her new set of wheels and give her a new lease of life.

In a note next to his donation, Kendrick wrote: "Thank you for always supporting me. Your a inspiration for me. You are strong and positive. Your kind and beautiful. For all the years of inspiring me, the least I can do is make sure your comfortable driving the city. A gift from me to you. Your always appreciated! – K. Lamar. (sic)"

Sharing her signed Kendrick T-shirt, Jennifer, who has been to see the rapper eight times and a massive supporter of the artists on his label Top Dawg Entertainment, wrote on Instagram: So about last night … lol. If you know me or even just look in my Instagram profile for two minutes then you know I am a huge Kendrick Lamar and TDE fan/supporter for YEARS. I’ve been to every show Kendrick has had in Dallas including the first one that even he forgot about lol and one in Austin. That’s 8 shows and not including the other TDE artists shows. I was a big fan of music and concerts before my injury but I never supported and loved a label like theirs before. Of course they have great music but they are also great people. None of them have ever treated me like a stranger or a charity case lol. I didn’t meet them because I’m in a wheelchair. I just know great people (shout out to @bluethegreat for the initial in person introduction to Dot & Q). I never supported them for any benefits like this lol. Their music and shows were enough for me. But this is amazing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all and always will. Thank God for you Kendrick and I will continue to pray for you. And like I said, next time I’m driving myself to your show lol. Thanks to the whole team! #tde (sic)"

Jamie Foxx and Issa Rae to present at BET Awards

Jamie Foxx and Issa Rae will be presenting at the BET Awards.

The ‘Ray’ actor and the 32-year-old actress-and-writer will join talk show host Trevor Noah, ‘All Eyez on Me’ star Demetrius Shipp Jr , and the cast of ‘Girls Trip’, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, in handing out prizes at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on June 25.

The news comes after it was recently announced Leslie Jones will present the annual ceremony.

The 49-year-old actress embarked on a career as a stand up comedian in 1987, which saw her entertain crowds on a show on the channel, and the funny woman believes her career has now come "full circle".

The ‘Ghostbusters’ star said: "BET was the first place I ever did comedy on TV, so it’s a full-circle moment of coming home where I started."

Leslie has hinted she is proud of her achievements and that she can boast about her successes when she returns home to her family and friends.

She explained: "I went out in the world and did what I needed to do and now I can come home to my people and say, ‘Yo! Look what I did!’"

And Leslie plans to make her audience "downright laugh" when she takes to the stage because she is "tired" of people being sad and angry, although she doesn’t think it will be possible to avoid commenting on "certain" subjects.

She added: "It’s really just about pulling the elephants out of the room and, actually, I’ll make the elephant in the room laugh about it.

"So my goal for this show is to have a big ‘ol nice barbecue, family reunion feel. I just want everyone cracking up. I want everyone leaving that event going, ‘Wait, did they even give awards out? I was too busy laughing.’ "

‘Lemonade’ hitmaker Beyonce has been nominated for seven awards, with Bruno Mars following with five.

Beyonce’s sister Solange has been nominated for four awards and will go head to head against her sister for the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.

Chance the Rapper and Migos also have four nominations each.

Kendrick Lamar stays at $10m villa for free

Kendrick Lamar stayed at a $10 million luxury villa for free during Coachella.

The Grammy Award-winning rap star was among the biggest attractions at this year’s music and arts festival in the Colorado Desert – and he was, therefore, put up for free in a luxury abode courtesy of Airbnb.

The property, which is known as Big Sioux, boasts six bedrooms and seven-and-a-half bathrooms, and can accommodate up to 16 guests.

The spectacular abode, located in Rancho Mirage in California, normally rents out for $1,880 per night and also features a private pool, raised spa and a tennis court, according to DailyMail.com.

And Kendrick has shown his appreciation to Airbnb through his Instagram account, posting a picture of himself at the property on the photo-sharing website.

The 29-year-old musician captioned the snap: "DAMN. thanks to @airbnb for puttin me up this weekend. (sic)"

Meanwhile, Kendrick released his fourth studio album, ‘DAMN.’, earlier this month and the rap star recently revealed the record centres on the idea of learning to accept situations he may not like.

Using the concept of parenthood to explain his thinking, he said previously: "One day, I may have a little girl … She’s gonna grow up. She’s gonna be a child I adore, I’m gonna always love her, but she’s gonna reach that one point where she’s gonna start experiencing things. And she’s gonna say things or do things that you may not condone, but it’s the reality of it and you know she was always gonna get to that place. And it’s disturbing.

"But you have to accept it. You have to accept it and you have to have your own solutions to figure out how to handle the action and take action for it."
