Footage of long-cancelled Kirby GCN for GameCube leaks in brief clip

Gameplay of the cancelled Kirby GCN for GameCube has surfaced online. The brief clip shows off a few of Kirby’s copy abilities as well as some enemies in the game.

Posted on YouTube by Foulowe59, a game referred to as Kirby GCN (or Kirby Adventure) can be briefly seen. Apparently, the footage was taken in 2005 during E3 from the showroom floor. Based on the footage, Nintendo was highlighting the game in some capacity to show its platforming, combat, and abilities the pink mascot possessed.

Unfortunately, Kirby GCN never saw the light of day. Kirby didn’t have much of a presence on GameCube. Kirby GCN was reportedly meant to be the official platformer for the titular character on GameCube following the launch of Kirby Air Ride. The game was announced in 2004, but development began all the way back in 2000, hailing from HAL Laboratory.

With similar concepts to Kirby 64, Kirby GCN shows Kirby platforming in a mix of 3D environments and more 2.5D areas. We catch small glimpses of copy abilities and some rather familiar enemies. Supposedly, there were 16 total copy abilities available. The game was also meant to support a variation of the Helper System from Kirby Super Star.

This isn’t the first time footage of Kirby GCN has emerged online. Back in 2011, IGN posted a rather crisp look at the game from 2005. The footage shown here is vastly different from the above but shows a clearer glimpse into Nintendo’s vision for the game.

Kirby didn’t receive the spotlight on GameCube. However, the character is currently basking in popularity on Switch. Across the device’s lifecycle, Nintendo has released a notable few games starring the loveable pink puffball including Super Kirby Clash, Kirby Star Allies, and more recently, Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby is now a Grammy winner — sort of

When he’s not sucking up entire cars, Kirby’s been busy taking home a shiny statue. Or, rather, musicians are earning that gold in his name.

That’s what happened during the 64th annual Grammy Awards on April 3rd, where musicians Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman won a Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or Acapella for their cover of Meta Knight’s Revenge from Kirby Superstar.

You can check out the song below:

The arrangement was performed by 8-Bit Big Band, a 25- to 65-member orchestra that remixes songs from classic games, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Final Fantasy VI.

This isn’t the first time that video music has popped up at the Grammys. In 2011, Civilization IV took home Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, making it the first win (and even nomination) for a video game song in any category. One year later, Austin Wintory’s score for Journey won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

It’s rather fitting, however, that Rosen and Silverman have now won for Kirby, given that the pink hero is celebrating his 30th anniversary this year. As part of that milestone, Nintendo recently released Kirby and the Forgotten Land on the Switch and is also planning a special free virtual Kirby concert in August.

Nintendo officially reveals new 3D platformer Kirby and the Forgotten Land

During Nintendo’s recent Direct stream, the Japanese gaming giant revealed a new 3D action platformer featuring its iconic pink blog character, Kirby.

The game is set to feature “familiar moves” and will allow players to move around freely in a three-dimensional environment. However, beyond this, not much was revealed about the title. Still, for fans of the pink ball that’s capable of sucking up nearly anything, it’s cool to see the franchise finally making a comeback.

Nintendo says that Kirby and the Forgotten Land will release in Spring 2022 for the Switch
