Koodo Summer Sale includes deals on Samsung Galaxy, iPhone, and Pixel

If you’re looking to pick up a new smartphone from Koodo, the Telus flanker brand has some summer deals on now.

To start, here are some choice smartphone offers:

If you’re not familiar with Koodo’s Tab system, here’s a quick run down. When you get a phone from Koodo (for example, the iPhone 12), you can put a portion of the cost of the phone on the Tab and pay it off over 24 equal monthly payments.

Using the iPhone 12 as an example, the Tab Plus option lets you pay $0 upfront and $25/mo Tab ($600 total after two years). The listed ‘Tab Bonus’ is the amount saved compared to buying the phone directly from Koodo (the iPhone 12 costs $976, less $600 is your $376 tab bonus). Granted, carriers tend to price their phones slightly higher than what the manufacturer sells them for, but in the case of the iPhone 12 the math works out well: Apple sells the phone for $949, making Koodo’s Tab Plus deal not too bad.

If you’re looking for steeper discounts, Koodo also has ‘Certified Pre-owned’ iPhones available. If you get an iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR from Koodo, you’ll get a bonus $150 Visa gift card.

Finally, Koodo has a couple of promotional plans available, although they aren’t exactly new. First up is a $55/mo 8GB plan that is only available for bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers. The other is a $65/mo 15GB plan that comes with a bonus 5GB of data, making it a 20GB plan. That offer is new and will run until July 4th.

You can check out Koodo’s ‘Summer Sale’ here.

Koodo, Fido, Virgin roll out $65/20GB limited-time offer

Koodo, Fido, and Virgin Plus have updated their plan pages with a new limited-time offer: $65/mo for 20GB of data.

The deal essentially adds 5GB of bonus data onto the flanker brands’ existing $65/15GB plans. Both Koodo and Virgin list the offer as running until July 4th, while Fido’s site simply says it’s a “limited time” deal. Interestingly, Fido’s website also says the offer “will appear on your 2nd or 3rd invoice.”

Overall, the new offer isn’t bad. The three flanker brands also offer $60/mo 10GB plans, so an extra $5/mo for double the data is pretty decent.

The $65/20GB plans include, as usual, Canada-wide calling, texting, and other features. You can check out the deal for yourself at the following links:

Also, if you’re a lucky Koodo customer, you may not even need to spring for this offer. Some customers received texts from the carrier in June offering them 5GB of free bonus data on their current plans. You can read more about that here.

Koodo thanking some customers with 5GB of free monthly bonus data

Some Koodo customers received texts from the carrier thanking them for “sticking with Koodo” and offering 5GB of bonus monthly data for free.

MobileSyrups own Bradly Shankar received one such message (you can check out the screenshot below). My wife receive a similar message from Koodo today as well. The message reads:

“Koodo: Hi, Bradly. Thanks for sticking with Koodo! To show our appreciation, we added 5GB of bonus monthly data to your account for no additional cost. Check out this gift by logging into Self-Serve… It will stay on until you change your plan or upgrade your phone.”

Koodo calls the gesture a “random act of happiness” in the message. It’s not clear how widespread the offer is, but any Koodo customers out there will want to keep an eye out for a similar message.

It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time Koodo has offered 5GB of bonus data. The Telus flanker brand sent out nearly identical messages to customers in December offering 5GB monthly data bonuses.

Koodo offers $1 discount on 8GB plan while increasing cost of 15GB plan by $5

Koodo has put its 8GB bring your own phone plan on sale.

The plan previously cost $56 a month but is offered for $55 a month for a limited time. The plan includes 8GB of data at 4G speed, unlimited Canada-wide minutes, and unlimited international messaging.

Koodo introduced the offer on May 11th but it’s unclear how long it will last.

The $1 promotion comes as Koodo simultaneously increased the cost of its 15GB plan to $65 a month. The plan previously cost $60 a month.

Koodo still has a plan worth $60 a month, but it offers a new option of 10GB of data, so new customers will get significantly less data. The last time Koodo offered a 10GB plan option, it cost $58 a month, as MobileSyrup reported on February 10th.

The increases come alongside a $4 a month hike on Koodo’s tab plans.

The plans offer customer loan options when purchasing new phones.

The Tab Plus option has a loan valued at $792, and customers pay $33 a month for 24 months. The Tab Mid option offers a $360 loan, and customers pay $15 a month.

Both tabs offer the loan alongside 10GB of data at 4G speed, unlimited Canada calling, and unlimited international texting. This plan was previously worth $56 a month but now costs $60.

Koodo isn’t the only flanker brand to have increased plan prices. Fido also increased the cost of its 10GB plan twice in two weeks.

You can view all of Koodo’s plans here.

Koodo increases cost of its tab plans by $4 a month

Koodo has increased the cost of its Tab Mid and Tab Plus plans.

The plans increased from $56 a month to $60. A user on RedFlagDeals first shared the news, which iPhone in Canada reported.

Customers can use one of the tab options to purchase a new phone and pay it off in equal installments over 24 months.

The Tab Plus option offers a loan valued at $792, and customers pay in monthly installments worth $33.

The Tab Mid option has a $360 loan, and customers pay $15 a month.

Both tabs offer the loan option with 10GB of data at 4G speed, unlimited calling in Canada, and unlimited international texting. This plan was worth $56 a month but now costs $60.

A second plan worth $65 a month offers all of the above and an extra 5GB of data. It’s unclear if the cost of this plan increased.

No changes seem to be applied to the basic plan.

As iPhone in Canada reports, the monthly increase means customers pay Koodo an extra $48 a year.

MobileSyrup has asked Koodo to provide details on the change and will provide an update once available.

Public Mobile will move to 100 percent online-only on July 13

As of July 13th, Public Mobile will be moving to 100-percent online-only and will no longer have retail locations, according to tip from a MobileSyrup reader.

Additionally, as of May 3rd, Koodo Prepaid will be available alongside Public Mobile, which means the two brands will overlap for a time until July 13th.

According to the information given to us by a reader, Koodo Prepaid will now be the “value brand of choice.”

Koodo Prepaid will include:

  • Call centre support
  • 3G and 4G speed plans
  • Koodo prepaid account management tool, which will allow sales reps to support customers with account management-related transactions. These include rate plan changes, booster purchases and SIM swaps.

Koodo Prepaid will also need no credit checks, no contracts and no overage charges, referral bonuses, chatbots and a self-care section on the website.

Public Mobile isn’t the only online-only carrier. Videotron’s Fizz Mobile moved to online-only back in 2020.

We’ve reached out to Koodo/Public Mobile for further information and will update this story.

Thanks reader

Koodo increases cost of its U.S and international roaming plans

Koodo has increased the cost of its roaming plans.

As first reported by iPhone in Canada, the U.S. roaming plan increased from $11 a day to $12. The international plan has increased from $14 a day to $15.

Koodo caps the cost of Easy Roam U.S. at $240 per billing cycle and Easy Roam International at $300 per cycle. This means users can continue to use their phone plans without any additional fees.

The Telus flanker brand is following similar price increases as Bell, which will be increasing the cost of its international roaming plan to $15 a day, up from $14. The change will come into effect on May 12th. Bell isn’t increasing the daily cost of its U.S. roaming plan.

Companies are increasing the prices of roaming plans as travel restrictions brought on by COVID continue to ease. It won’t be surprising if other telecom companies follow suit.

Telus, Koodo extend suspension of long-distance fees for calls to Ukraine

Telus and its flanker brand Koodo both announced via Twitter that they would extend waiving long-distance charges for calls and texts made from Canada to Ukraine.

The extension will run until May 31st, 2022, according to the tweets. Both statements note the providers are extending support “to keep you connected with your friends and family in Ukraine.”

Several Canadian carriers and providers announced suspensions of long-distance and texting charges for Canadians contacting Ukraine back in February. Several said they would waive charges until mid- or late-March, so this likely marks the beginning of extension announcements from carriers.

Earlier in March, Telus announced it would donate $2 million through the Telus Friendly Future Foundation to Canadian charities assisting families impacted by the conflict.

Additionally, Telus’ tweet links to a webpage detailing the company’s various support efforts for Ukraine. You can find that page here.

Koodo launches Spring Sale with discounts on phones and pre-owned devices

Telus’ flanker brand Koodo launched a ‘Spring Sale’ with several deals on phones and plans.

Well, mostly phones. The provider still has the same $55/10GB and $60/15GB plans added in February, but now with fancy ‘Promotion’ stickers tacked on. Still, if you’re in the market for a new phone and don’t mind Koodo’s new data speed caps, there are some offers to consider:

Koodo also has some offers on ‘Certified Pre-owned’ devices:

  • iPhone XS – $0 down, $15/mo Tab + get a $200 Visa gift card
  • iPhone XS Max – $0 down, $17/mo Tab + get a $200 Visa gift card
  • iPhone XR – $0 down, $12/mo Tab + get a $150 Visa gift card

Finally, it’s worth noting that Koodo is offering $100 in savings if you shop online during the Spring Sale. However, what that actually means is new customers who get an eligible 4G speed data plan that costs $45/mo or more can get a $50 bill credit and Koodo will waive the $50 connection fee.

You can check out all the Koodo Spring Sale offers here.

Koodo replaces $58/15GB promo and $52/8GB plans

Koodo has stopped offering its $52/month 8GB and $58/month 15GB plans to customers.

Those plans have been replaced with a $55/month 10 GB plan and a $60/month 15GB plan.

As earlier reported by MobileSyrup, the Telus flanker brand said it will discontinue the pricing on February 27th. While the $58/month 15GB was labelled as a promotional offer on the website, originally a 10GB plan with a 5GB data bonus, the $52/month 8GB wasn’t labelled as such.

Top: Koodo plans as of February 28th, 2022. Bottom: Koodo plans as of February 25th, 2022.

Both Fido and Virgin Plus have also replaced their $52/8GB and $58/15GB plans with $55/8GB and $60/15GB plans, respectively.

Koodo’s $58/month 15GB promotional plan has been available to customers periodically since January 22nd.

Koodo’s plans can be viewed here.
