Koodo to remove $58/15GB promo and $52/8GB plans on February 27

Telus flanker brand Koodo will stop offering its $52/mo 8GB and $58/mo 15GB plans on February 27th.

In a recent update to its website, Koodo added new text detailing the “offer” end date to both plans. However, it’s worth noting that the $58/mo 15GB option was the only promotional offer.

The move comes after both Fido and Virgin Plus tweaked plans to replace their $52/8GB and $58/15GB plans with $55/8GB and $60/15GB plans respectively. It’s unclear what plans Koodo will offer on February 27th once it removes the old offers, but I’d be surprised if Koodo didn’t match Fido and Virgin.

This will likely mark the end of Koodo’s $58/15GB promo plan, which has been available on and off since January 22nd.

Koodo plans as of February 25th, 2022.

As a refresher, the $58 promo plan was actually a 10GB plan with a 5GB data bonus. It’s possible Koodo may follow Fido and keep the $58/10GB plan but remove the bonus data. Regardless, we’ll see what happens in a few days.

Koodo does still offer ‘Starter’ plans that are cheaper and have less data, but Koodo also restricts those to bring-your-own-phone customers.

Finally, it’s also worth keeping in mind that Koodo recently added data speed caps to its plans, limiting them from going over 100Mbps down. While 100Mbps is likely still suitable for most mobile tasks, it’s frustrating that yet another restriction has been added to Canadian cell phone plans.

Koodo adds 100Mbps data speed cap to its 4G plans

After Telus implemented speed caps for its mobile data plans, a spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that Koodo is also applying speed caps to new plans.

According to a statement from a Telus spokesperson, flanker brand Koodo will cap 4G LTE data plans at up to 100Mbps starting February 16th:

“Starting February 16, new customers and existing customers taking a new Koodo plan will enjoy TELUS’ world-class 4G LTE network with speeds up to 100 Mbps. Customers can continue to fully enjoy all features on social media with no buffering, capture life’s best moments and share HD videos with loved ones seamlessly.”

It sounds like existing Koodo customers will not be impacted unless they change to a new Koodo plan.

Following MobileSyrup reporting about the Telus change, several readers pointed out that a Koodo help page listed speeds for 3G and 4G plans as up to 3Mbps and up to 100Mbps respectively. Additionally, I noticed a change on Koodo’s website that switched the provider’s plans from being listed as “4G LTE” to just “4G.”

It’s also worth noting that Telus applies a 100Mbps speed cap to its 4G-capable prepaid plans.

Telus and Koodo did not specify why they implemented the data speed caps. MobileSyrup will update this post with any additional details it learns.

Koodo’s $58/15GB promo plan returns just days after being removed

Just two days after removing the $58/15GB promotional plan, Telus flanker brand Koodo re-added the offer to its website.

As before, Koodo’s $58 plan comes with 10GB of data and a bonus 5GB of data. Once again, Koodo lists the plan as a limited-time offer, although it’s unclear how long the promo will stick around (or if it will return after Koodo inevitably removes it). Oddly, Koodo’s website also still lists the $58/10GB version of the plan, although it doesn’t make sense to buy while the 15GB variant is available.

Koodo first added the $58/15GB plan back in January but removed it in February. Rogers’ Fido also offered the plan, removed it, then added it back on February 11th. Bell’s Virgin Plus has the $58/15GB promo as well but hasn’t followed the others in removing and re-adding it.

None of Koodo’s other plans have changed, and the $58/15GB promo is still available for customers who bring their own phone or customers who buy a phone on Koodo’s Tab.

All of Koodo’s plans include call display, voicemail, call waiting, and conference calling. Most of the carrier’s plans — including the $58/15GB promo — also offer unlimited Canada-wide calling and unlimited international messaging.

You can learn more about the plan on Koodo’s website.

Koodo downgrades $58/15GB plan to 10GB, Virgin still offers 15GB plan for now

Telus’ flanker brand Koodo has removed the $58/mo 15GB plan promotion from its website, following in the steps of Rogers’ Fido brand, which ditched its $58/15GB plan on February 7th.

Koodo was always going to remove the $58/15GB — when the provider added it back in January, the promotional plan was clearly listed as a limited-time offer. However, unlike Fido, Koodo didn’t specify an end date.

The plan was originally a $58/10GB offer with a bonus 5GB of data tacked on. That extra 5GB bonus is no longer available, but the $58/10GB plan is — not that I’d recommend taking it now that the 5GB bonus is gone.

If you’re looking for a 15GB plan, Bell’s Virgin Plus still had its $58/15GB promo plan live at the time of publication. It’s not clear how much longer Virgin will keep the plan around now that Koodo and Fido have removed it.

Koodo’s other plans remain unchanged:

  • $30/mo no data, unlimited minutes and messaging
  • $52/mo 8GB data, unlimited minutes and messaging
$58/mo 10GB data, unlimited minutes and messaging

There’s also an assortment of ‘Starter’ plans ranging from $15/mo with 250MB of data to $45/mo with 6GB of data, but these plans are only available to customers that bring their own phone and some are limited to 3G data speeds.

You can check out all of Koodo’s plans here.

Canadian carrier pricing, pre-order details for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series

Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy S smartphones, the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra, at its Unpacked event on February 9th. Shortly after, Canadian carriers started revealing their pricing and pre-order details.

We’ve collected the pricing and pre-order information below so you can check out which carrier has the best offer on the S22 series. Some carriers haven’t released pricing yet, so keep in mind that some might be missing from the list below, but we’ll add them as information becomes available.

It’s also worth noting how much these phones cost outright from Samsung:

  • Samsung Galaxy S22: 8GB + 128GB — $1,099.99
  • Samsung Galaxy S22: 8GB + 256GB — $1,169.99
  • Samsung Galaxy S22+: 8GB + 128GB — $1,399.99
  • Samsung Galaxy S22+: 8GB + 256GB — $1,469.99
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: 8GB + 128GB — $1,649.99
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: 8GB + 256GB — $1,789.99

  • Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra: 12GB + 1TB — $2,209.99 (Samsung exclusive)

You can learn more about Samsung’s S22 pricing here.

Telus

Telus revealed its pre-order details, including a special limited-time offer to “double the memory” of the S22 series. According to details on the carrier’s website, customers can get the 256GB S22 Ultra, S22+, or S22 for the same price as the 128GB version. Telus notes that the discount applies automatically. This offer ends on March 10th, 2022 and is only available with a two-year Telus ‘Easy Payment’ financing term.

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $0 upfront, $40.29/mo financing for 24 months with Bring-It-Back ($2,210 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22+ starts at $0 upfront, $37.42/mo financing for 24 months with Bring-It-Back ($1,815 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22 starts at $0 upfront, $29.42/mo financing for 24 months with Bring-It-Back ($1,445 retail price)

You can learn more about Telus’ Samsung Galaxy S22 pricing here.

Koodo

Telus’ flanker brand Koodo also has the Samsung S22 series available for pre-order, but without the same storage discount. It’s also worth noting that Koodo doesn’t offer financing plans like other carriers — instead, it uses a ‘Tab’ system that reduces the upfront cost of a device and then divides that up as a monthly Tab Charge that customers pay along with their monthly plan cost.

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $858 upfront on Tab Plus with a $33/mo Tab cost for 24 months ($2,040 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22+ starts at $608 upfront on Tab Plus with a $33/mo Tab cost for 24 months ($1,730 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22 starts at $308 upfront on Tab Plus with a $33/mo Tab cost for 24 months ($1,360 retail price)

Check out all of Koodo’s S22 series pricing here.

Freedom Mobile

Shaw-owned regional carrier Freedom also offers the double storage deal on the new Samsung Galaxy S22 series. That means Freedom customers can pick up a new S22 device with 256GB of storage for the same price as the 128GB version of the device. That’s a savings of up to $168, depending on which phone you get.

  • Galaxy S22 starts at $0 upfront, $28/mo MyTab for 24 months with a $50/mo plan on TradeUp ($1,296 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22+ starts at $0 upfront, $37/mo MyTab for 24 months with a $50/mo plan on TradeUp ($1,656 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $0 upfront, $40/mo MyTab for 24 months with a $50/mo plan on TradeUp ($1,944 retail price)

Learn more about Freedom Mobile’s S22 series pricing here.

Shaw Mobile

Shaw’s Galaxy S22 series pricing is also live, although it’s worth noting that Shaw is a little different since its plans and prices rely on customers’ Shaw internet package. If you’re a Shaw internet customer, make sure to check out the carrier’s website to see what your package will get you.

Additionally, like the others, Shaw offers a limited-time discount on the 256GB S22 models that makes them the same cost as the 128GB models.

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $0 down, $72/mo MyTab for 24 months ($1,944 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22+ starts at $0 down, $60/mo MyTab for 24 months ($1,656 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22 starts at $0 down, $45/mo MyTab for 24 months ($1,296 retail price)

Check out all of Shaw Mobile’s S22 pricing here.

Rogers

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers also has the double storage offer, which appears as a discount applied to the 256GB S22 models that brings the price down to match the 128GB versions.

  • Galaxy S22 Ultra starts at $0 down, $53.83/mo financing (regular $77.21) with Upfront Edge ($2,211 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22+ starts at $0 down, $46.08/mo financing (regular $63.38) with Upfront Edge ($1,815 retail price)
  • Galaxy S22 starts at $0 down, $36.08/mo financing (regular $50.46) with Upfront Edge ($1,445 retail price)

Feds achieve target to reduce wireless prices, but say more needs to be done

Canadians pay some of the highest cell phone bills in the world. The federal government promised to reduce wireless bills by 25 percent to change this.

The government says the commitment, made in March 2020, has now been achieved three months ahead of schedule.

But just as we’ve seen in previous reports released by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), questions remain.

It’s important to point out this is the first and only quarter where all provinces have met the minimum 25 percent target through non-promotional plans. Before this, plans were only available on a promotional basis. It wasn’t until October 2021 that Koodo, Fido, and Virgin brought out ‘starter’ plans to meet government targets. It’s worth noting that these starter plans come with several restrictions, namely that they aren’t available to customers who also want to get a smartphone from a carrier.

The reductions have seen a $50/mo plan with 2GB of data drop to $37.50/mo, a $55/4GB option drop to $41.25/mo and a $60/6GB plan drop to $45/mo.

As in previous reports, all provinces except Quebec have matching charts (Ontario chart is the one shown).

The government specifically required the ‘Big Three’ (Bell, Telus, and Rogers) to offer these reductions across their brands. What they didn’t require was for the three to offer the reductions themselves, which resulted in the carrier’s flanker brands (Virgin Plus, Koodo, and Fido respectively) offering plans that meet the government targets while the Big Three continue to offer plans starting at $80/mo.

While there is progress from each sub-brand, there’s no improvement to plans offered by the larger corporations that own them. Data shared with the public doesn’t include any numbers from the Big Three themselves.

Quebec

The data reported by the ISED show similar figures across all provinces, except for Quebec.

Fido and Virgin deliver a 27 percent reduction on the 4GB data option. The report notes that both companies offered 4GB options that would meet the 25 percent threshold and the 27 percent threshold. The less expensive one is included in the report, hence the 27 percent reduction.

Data also shows carriers in the province have offered a 3GB service option on and off since October 2020. In some cases, it was promotional, but it appeared to be a part of their regular lists in most months.

Looking at this quarter only (October 2021 to December 2021), Virgin offered a $40/mo plan with 3GB of data in October and November that isn’t marked as a promotional offer. Fido offered a similar plan for the two months but lists it as promotional. Koodo only offers the plan through a promotion in October.

The quarterly report does not state if the companies met the 3G target because there was no benchmark number available to compare it to. It’s unclear why the government show 3G as an option if data is not available from carriers.

In a press release, the government says “wireless services are still too expensive” and promises to build on the changes we’ve seen so far. No specific details are included as to how and when this will be done.

Koodo offering $60/15GB plan with $5/mo credit, Virgin offering $58/15GB

Both Koodo and Virgin Plus are offering new 15GB plans for a limited time. The new plans come just days after Koodo changed up its plans. On the surface, it looks like Virgin has a better deal, but Koodo’s offering a $5/mo bill credit that makes it the better offer.

Starting with Koodo, the Telus flanker brand recently rolled out a $60/mo 12GB plan to replace its $55/10GB plan after Rogers’ Fido did the same. Now, just two days later, Koodo has changed the $60/12GB plan to a $60/15GB plan.

Koodo’s website specifies that the $60/15GB plan is actually a 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB of data. It’s not immediately clear if the 5GB bonus is temporary or if it drops off the plan at a certain time, but the website does note that the plan is a limited-time offer. Moreover, the $5/mo bill credit is still available and still lasts 24 months, meaning that if you get this plan, you could pay $55/mo for 15GB for two years.

Koodo’s new $60/15GB plan with a $5/mo bill credit.

The plan is available both on Koodo’s BYOP and Tab options and includes unlimited Canada-wide minutes, unlimited text and picture messaging, call display, voicemail, call waiting, and conference calling. You can check it out here.

Virgin Plus, on the other hand, has basically the same plan for $58/mo. The Bell flanker brand did not follow Koodo and Fido in rolling out a $60/12GB plan — instead, it switched its $55/10GB plan to $58/mo and tacked on the 5GB data bonus to bring it up to 15GB total.

Like Koodo, Virgin’s website notes that the $58/15GB plan is a limited-time offer and is really just a 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB. It’s not clear if the 5GB bonus is temporary. Unlike Koodo, Virgin doesn’t offer a bill credit with the plan.

Virgin’s plan also includes unlimited Canada-wide minutes and messaging and is available for BYOP customers and those looking to get a new phone. You can check out Virgin’s plans here.

As of writing, Fido still offers a $60/12GB plan with bill credit and has not joined Virgin and Koodo in offering a 15GB plan instead.

Koodo follows Fido, adds $60/12GB plan with $5/mo bill credit

Telus’ flanker brand Koodo added a new $60/12GB promotional plan, bringing it in line with Fido.

Rogers’ flanker brand recently updated its plans, scrapping half the main plan options and increasing the 8GB plan from $50/mo to $52/mo — you can read more about those changes here. Koodo has now adjusted one of its plans to match.

Koodo previously offered a $30/mo plan with unlimited calling and texting but no data, a $52/mo 8GB plan, and a $55/mo 10GB plan. That plan is now a $60/12GB ‘Promotion’ plan — the others remain unchanged.

Koodo also offers a $5/mo bill credit that lasts for 24 months (a $120 credit in total), effectively making the plan a $55/12GB offer. Somewhat confusingly, the ‘Sweet deal’ box notes that the credit applies when customers bring their own phone, but if you switch to one of the Tab options listed on the plan page (Tab Plus, Tab Mid, Tab Basic), the offer text changes to say it applies to that Tab instead. In other words, it looks like you can get the $5 24-month credit whether you go BYOP or get a phone on Koodo’s Tab.

The $5 credit is likely intended to match a similar offer from Fido that shows up when you select a plan on the flanker brand’s website. As customers go through the check-out process on Fido’s site, a pop-up should appear offering a $5/mo credit for 24 months.

As of writing, Bell flanker brand Virgin Plus has not updated its plan page to match the $60/12GB offer from Koodo and Fido — it still offers the $55/10GB plan.

It’s also worth noting that Koodo hasn’t adjusted its ‘Starter’ plans, which are lower-cost options that generally match the government’s targets from the ongoing wireless pricing tracking program. Koodo does not allow customers to select these plans if they buy a phone.

You can check out Koodo’s plans here. It’s worth noting that prices may differ depending on your province.

Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus Boxing Day deals include 17GB for $55 data plan

If you got a new phone over the holidays and you’re looking for a new plan to complement it, look no further than one of the big three flanker brands. Fido, Virgin Plus, and Koodo offer identical online plans that include 17GB of data for $55 per month.

This is a huge discount, and if you can snag it, an actual fair valuation for price per data in Canada. I can say it’s tempting me back away from Telus.

These new plans only seem to apply to new activations, so I’d aim for Virgin or Koodo first, but if you’re already with them or live in an area that has better Rogers coverage, its flanker brand, Fido is really a fine alternative.

Both the Rogers’ owned carrier and Koodo even offered me a $50 bill credit when I went through the motions of signing up when writing this deal.

The carriers are also offering 12GB for $50 if you don’t need as much data and want to save a bit of cash throughout the year.

You can find the deals below:
