Student discounts on Apple’s new M2 Pro/M2 Max machines available now

Apple’s Education Program is a solid way for anyone to get a slight discount on new Apple products.

The new M2 and M2 Pro Mac mini, alongside the new 14 and 16-inch M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pros, are available with the student discount, as shared by RedFlagDeals user ‘GTA2020.’

Previously, Apple used Unidays to verify that people were eligible students, but that limitation was lifted in January last year.

Check out the discounted pricing for the new machines below:

Mac mini

14-inch MacBook Pro

16-inch MacBook Pro

It’s worth noting that the pricing mentioned above is for the base variant of each model. Additional cores, memory, storage and pre-installed software incur an extra cost. Also worth noting is that Apple has locked down the Education Store with new rules that limit people from taking too much advantage of the discount. These rules limit shoppers to one desktop, Mac mini, laptop, two iPads and two accessories per year, per Apple account.

Find out how the new machines benchmark against their predecessors here.

Apple’s MacBook Pro and Mac mini (2023) are now available

Following their reveal last week, Apple’s MacBook Pro and Mac mini (2023) are now available in-store in Canada.

Beyond the M2 Pro/Max chip included in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2023), there are a few other changes under the hood, including Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and HDMI 2.1. On the other hand, the Mac mini only gets the M2/M2 Pro and not the Max, though it does feature Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and HDMI 2.1.

For more on Apple’s MacBook Pro and Mac mini (2023), check out my breakdown of how both devices’ M2 Pro chip benchmarks here.

Apple’s 14-inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 for the 10-core CPU/16-core GPU version, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $3,199.

Regarding the Mac mini, the desktop device starts at $799 for the M2 8-core/10-core GPU version. For this story, I benchmarked the 10-core/16-core GPU iteration with 16GB of RAM, which costs $1,299.

Apple unveils M2 Pro and M2 Max chips

Apple announced new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips on January 17th, alongside new MacBook Pro and Mac mini models.

According to a press release from Apple, the M2 Pro chip scales up the M2 architecture to offer an up to a 12-core CPU and up to a 19-core GPU alongside up to 32GB of unified memory. The M2 Max, on the other hand, offers up to a 38-core GPU, double the unified memory bandwidth and up to 96GB of unified memory. Moreover, both chips include a faster 160core Neural Engine as well as Apple’s media engine.

Apple says that the M2 Pro chip brings “pro performance to Mac mini for the first time,” while the M2 Pro and Max will boost the power of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

Apple reportedly delays M2 MacBook Pro and Mac mini until 2023

It seems earlier rumours indicating Apple could launch its M2-powered MacBook Pro and Mac mini in November might be incorrect. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has reworked its plans and will drop its refreshed Mac lineup in the new year.

Gurman says that Apple’s M2 Pro and Max-powered chips will make their way to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro in early 2023, replacing the current M1 chips featured in the laptop line. It’s possible we could finally see this laptop refresh at Apple’s March event. Beyond the addition of the M2 chip, not much else is expected to change about Apple’s high-end laptop.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman also mentions that a refreshed M2-powered Mac mini is coming in 2023. What’s unclear is whether Apple’s cheese grater-like Mac Pro will be refreshed at the same time as the rest of Apple’s Mac lineup. The tech giant still needs to refresh its 24-inch iMac, too.

Apple most recently brought its M2 chip to the iPad Pro (2022). The MacBook Air (2022) and the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022) also feature the M2 chip.

Apple could launch 4 new M2-powered Macs later this year

Along with a report surrounding a new iPhone SE/iPad Air and a fast-approaching March 8th hardware event, Bloomberg’s often-reliable Mark Gurman is back at it again with a rumour surrounding Apple’s future Mac plans.

Gurman says that along with one new Mac launching this spring — likely an M1 Pro/Max-powered Mac mini — at least four new M2 Macs are currently in Apple’s pipeline.

This list includes a new MacBook Air, a refreshed entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro and a 24-inch iMac. There’s also a possibility we could see a new 27-inch iMac in 2022, though recent rumours point to an August or September release, instead of a summer reveal.

The notorious source of Apple leaks doesn’t expand much on this report in his Power On newsletter, though he does mention that the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will likely ditch the Touch Bar and says it will lack the higher-end Pro models’ impressive ProMotion display.

In other Apple-related news, Gurman says that Apple’s new iPhone SE will feature the same iPhone 8-like design as its predecessor, but with a faster A15 chip and 5G support. The new iPad Air will also be similar to its 2020 counterpart, with the primary change being a more powerful A15 chip.

Here’s what to expect from Apple’s October 18 ‘Unleashed’ event

Just as rumours predicted, Apple will hold another hardware event on October 18th. However, unlike its previous events, this latest invite doesn’t hint at what we might see beyond the word “Unleashed.”

However, several leaks and rumours point to the tech giant finally revealing its long-awaited MacBook Pro refresh and several other Mac refreshes.

Here’s everything we expect to see at Apple’s October 18th event:

MacBook Pro refresh

Out of all of the rumours circulating surrounding Apple’s event, this one is likely the most reliable. According to Bloomberg‘s often-reliable Mark Gurman, Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro will release in two variants, including a 14-inch and 16-inch version powered by an upgraded version of the M1 chip called the M1X.

The redesigned MacBook Pro is also rumoured to feature reduced bezels, support for up to 32GB of RAM and adopt an entirely new squared-off design that falls more in line with Apple’s other devices like the iPad Pro and the iPhone 13 series.

There are also rumours sourced from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo related to an SD card slot, HDMI port and MagSafe making a return to the MacBook line with this redesign.

While Apple is also reportedly working on a refresh of the MacBook Air, rumours point to the new version of the lightweight laptop being revealed in 2022.

Mac mini and iMac

Along with the MacBook Pro, several rumours point to Apple showing off a new Mac mini powered by its M1X chip. It’s unclear if the tiny computer will also get a redesign, but a report courtesy of MacRumors points to additional ports and an increase to 32GB of RAM.

Though we haven’t encountered any concrete rumours regarding a new iMac Pro, there’s a possibility we could see Apple’s high-end all-in-one computer get a refresh. The new iMac Pro will likely feature a design similar 24-inch iMac Pro (2021), including its squared-off design. That said, given this is Apple’s high-end iMac, and the company has a history of offering its more powerful devices in fewer colours, we likely won’t see the M1X-powered iMac Pro in hues like ‘Yellow,’ ‘Blue’ or ‘Orange.’

3rd-gen AirPods

After months of rumours, there’s a possibility that Apple could finally reveal its 3rd-generation AirPods at its upcoming October 18th event.

At this point, an entry-level AirPods refresh has been rumoured for years, with speculation pointing to the new version of the wireless earbuds featuring some form of noise-cancellation and a design similar to the AirPods Pro.

Since the last AirPods refresh was way back in 2019, the wireless earbuds are long overdue for an update, and if Apple plans to drop the wireless buds before the holiday season, this is likely the company’s last opportunity.
