Apple confirms its virtual WWDC keynote is set for June 6 at 1pm ET

Though Apple already confirmed a few weeks ago that WWDC 2022 will run from June 6th to the 10th, the tech giant has revealed the timing for the annual event’s keynote — 1pm ET/10am PT.

Similar to years past, Apple will hold this year’s event remotely, though it will offer an in-person watch party for a small group of developers.

WWDC is typically software-focused and focused on the tech giant showing off updates to iOS, iPadOS, MacOS and more, but rumours point to the tech giant possibly finally revealing its often-reported virtual reality headset.

Along with the new headset, there’s a possibility the tech giant could reveal a new iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and even an M1-powered Mac Pro.

Mark Gurman predicts new Macs at WWDC

In June, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects big things at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC). Including two new Macs.

Specifically, he expects a redesigned MacBook Air and some other Mac to come out either in the middle of the year, like at WWDC, or early in the second half of the year.

This MacBook Air would signify the next step in Apple’s desktop chips and come equipped with an Apple M2 processor. If the rumours about this laptop are correct, it will also come in a few colours.

We could also see a refreshed Mac mini or 24-inch iMac that uses this new chip. There are skeptical rumours that Apple will also revamp the 13-inch MacBook Pro, but I’m not sure if I believe that the smallest Pro model will stick around much longer.

Beyond the new hardware, we’re also seeing Apple’s latest software suite, including iOS 16. This will be the most exciting update alleged by Gurman since it may include many references to Apple’s work in the AR space to get ready for its augmented reality headset.

Beyond that, there isn’t going to be a visual redesign alongside the updates this year.

Apple possibly planning 15-inch MacBook Air, larger entry-level iPad for 2023

Apple may release a larger 15-inch MacBook Air next year alongside an entry-level iPad with a bigger display, according to a report.

The news comes from Display Supply Chain Consultants’ (DSCC) ‘Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology‘ report. Although the report is only available to members of the display industry, a DSCC analyst shared Apple-specific tidbits with 9to5Mac.

Specifically, DSCC supply chain information points to Apple planning a new MacBook Air variant for 2021 with a screen size of around 15-inches. Additionally, the DSCC report notes that Apple plans to bump up the current MacBook Air display size from 13.3 inches to something “slightly larger” but still between 13- and 14-inches.

As an interesting aside, 9to5 notes that internal Apple emails revealed during the Epic v. Apple lawsuit suggested Apple planned to release a 15-inch MacBook Air back in 2008 but opted to launch an 11-inch model instead.

The DSCC report also mentioned Apple may plan to launch a slightly bigger entry-level iPad next year. The current iPad sports a 10.2-inch display — it’s unclear how much bigger the new variant would be.

I also wonder if that means we’ll see a refreshed design for the entry-level iPad. It’s sported the same dated look for years and while that likely helped keep the cost low, I’d love to see a refreshed, modern design that better matches what’s available from Apple’s other iPad offerings. If the company already plans to alter the display size, I think it’d make sense to make other changes, too.

Of course, both the iPad and MacBook Air changes are speculation based on the DSCC report, so take the information with a grain of salt. That said, people seem to like the idea of a larger MacBook Air, and with Apple doing a better job of listening to customers, maybe that will actually happen.

Apple’s redesigned MacBook Air might not arrive until later in 2022

Some expected Apple’s anticipated redesigned MacBook Air to make an appearance during the tech giant’s March hardware event, but that didn’t happen.

Now, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple reportedly doesn’t have plans to launch the new MacBook Air until later in 2022. Further, the tech giant won’t launch a new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro until 2023, according to the Bloomberg reporter.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple planned to launch its new MacBook Air at the end of 2021, but the release date has slipped to the second half of 2022. The new Air is expected to feature a refreshed design, Apple’s rumoured M2 chip and MagSafe.

Previous reports have indicated that Apple plans to launch the MacBook Air in several colours similar to the 24-inch M1 iMac.

On the other hand, the 2023 MacBook Pro refresh will include new and more powerful ‘M2 Pro’ and ‘M2 Max’ chips, according to the report. Given Apple’s entire Mac line has been refreshed with M1 chips and a new look, it makes sense that the MacBook Air would be next in line.

Apple’s current MacBook Air comes with an M1 chip and still features the same design as the laptop’s last refresh back in 2018.

Apple will reportedly still reveal a new MacBook Air later this year

A new MacBook Air design is reportedly still on the way.

According to often reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple still has plans to reveal a new version of the MacBook Air before the end of the year.

The analyst says that the design will be more in-line with the new MacBook Pro and that the thin laptop will be available in seven different colours, including models that feature white bezels and a white keyboard. Imagine a MacBook Air lineup that adopted the same colours as the iPad Air? I’ll go with ‘Starlight,’ thanks. Kuo says that the production will kick off in the second or third quarter of 2022.

The new MacBook Air isn’t expected to feature the MacBook Pro’s mini-LED display. It’s unclear if the new Air will feature the M1 or Apple’s rumoured M2 chip.

At Apple’s March 8th event, the tech giant showed off several new devices, including a new iPhone SE and iPad Air. The tech giant also revealed its new Mac Studio and Studio Display.

Apple reportedly set to complete silicon transition away from Intel, completed by WWDC instead

Apple’s debut of its in-house M1 chip during November 2020 was the first milestone in Apple’s transition away from Intel reliance. Apple had planned a two-year period to pave the road for the company to complete its transition. Now, a new report claims WWDC 2022 will see the completion of this transition period.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a brand new Mac Pro, a new Mac mini, and an iMac Pro with a large screen. All three new devices are said to be backed by Apple silicon. These will prove to be the defacto finish line in the company’s plan. As explained in Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter (seen by 9to5Mac), the three devices may be unveiled during the first half of 2022.

“The company has a bevy of new pro Macs in the works based on the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips that are already inside the MacBook Pro. That includes a smaller Mac Pro with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores, a new Mac mini and a large-screened iMac Pro. I’d expect Apple to finish its transition to its own silicon from Intel chips as early as June at WWDC 2022,” Gurman wrote.

He also discusses the next-generation chip from Apple. Tentatively dubbed the ‘M2’ chip, it’s said that while expected in 2022, it won’t offer any major performance improvements but will feature “the same overall CPU core count”. Apple’s M1 offers four high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores. Though, Gurman believes the M2 will feature a modestly improved GPU. The differences between the M1 and M2 are said to be comparable to the improvements made between Apple’s annual iPhone upgrades.

The report also backs up previous claims that Apple is working on a major refresh to its MacBook Air. It’s believed that the new device will sport the M2 chip over the M1 Pro and M1 Max silicon. It’s also expected that the new MacBook Air will feature the “biggest redesign in the product’s history.”

Apple’s breakup with Intel has long been openly discussed by the iPhone maker. Rather than rely on Intel to make meaningful innovations, Apple has taken ownership over the silicon in its own devices. So far, it’s been met with positive reception. Though, Apple silicon is still in its infancy. It remains to be seen if the M2 can impress next year.

Don’t expect any more Apple events this year: report

Apple unveiled its highly-anticipated MacBook Pro refresh at its ‘Unleashed’ event on October 18th, which could be the last Apple event for this year.

People following Apple closely expected potentially three events from the company this year, similar to what it did last fall. In 2020, Apple had a September event for the Apple Watch and iPad, an October event for the iPhone 12 and HomePod and another October event for its first Apple Silicon Macs.

However, Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman said in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter that he wouldn’t expect a third event from Apple this year. The information appears to be in the Q&A section, so you won’t be able to see it if you’re a free subscriber. 9to5Mac shared the quote, which you can read below:

“I wouldn’t expect a third event this year or any other major announcements. Apple held three events last year because Covid-19 caused delays and disrupted its schedule. If Apple had any more Macs to launch this year, it would have announced them this past week—even if they wouldn’t be shipping until later this year. There’s really nothing else left of substance in the road map that would be ready for 2021. Instead, look for a larger Apple Silicon iMac, new Mac mini, new iPhone SE and new iPad Pro after 2022 gets underway.”

Frankly, it makes a lot of sense. This fall, Apple has announced new iPhones, the Apple Watch Series 7, a new iPad mini and base-level iPad, new MacBook Pros and new AirPods. The only other things we’re expecting are a new iPhone SE, an Apple Silicon iMac aimed at pros and a new iPad Pro. As Gurman said, if those were ready, Apple probably would have already announced them.

Moreover, Gurman notes in the newsletter that we should expect a new MacBook Air in roughly six to eight months. The new Air will sport an ‘M2’ chip sporting more graphics cores than the M1, but the same number of computing cores likely at a faster clock speed. In other words, there are still exciting announcements on the horizon, but don’t expect them until next year.

Apple’s refreshed MacBook Pro reportedly on track to release later this month

Apple’s September event was jampacked with new products, however, the MacBook Pro, which has long been rumoured to get a refresh, didn’t get its time to shine.

Now, in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter (paywall), Mark Gruman reiterates that the new M1X chip MacBook Pro is expected to release within the next month during a Mac-centric Apple event, and considering that historically Apple has held its Mac-focused events around October or early November, the timeframe makes sense.

“We’ll likely see it show up first in a new range of MacBook Pros in the next month and a higher-end Mac mini at some point,” reads the newsletter. “The M1X has been developed in two variations: both with 10 CPU cores (eight high-performance and two high-efficiency) and either 16 or 32 graphics cores.”

Regarding Apple’s other Macs, Gurman claims that the company is working on a high-performance processor for a future Mac Pro, as well as an M2 for the MacBook Air, iMac, and lower-end MacBook Pro models.

The updated M1X MacBook Pro is rumoured to have an SD card slot, an HDMI port and MagSafe compatibility with an entirely new design with minimal bezels.

Apple’s redesigned MacBook Air might not arrive until late 2022

If you were holding out on upgrading your MacBook Air in hopes that the rumoured significant refresh would drop soon, you’re about to be disappointed.

According to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), Apple’s redesigned MacBook Air — which is rumoured to feature a more squared-off design and an upgraded M1 chip — won’t hit mass production until the third quarter of 2022. In the past, Kuo has predicted that this announcement would take place in the middle of 2022.

Along with a more powerful processor, rumours point to the lightweight laptop featuring a mini-LED display, MagSafe and two USB 4.0 USB-C ports. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that the new design will be “lighter and thinner” and that Apple plans to release it in several colours, similar to the 24-inch M1 iMac.

The M1 MacBook Air is an absolutely killer machine when it comes to power and battery life, so it will be interesting to see how Apple builds on the laptop’s established foundation with a new, more colourful look. With that in mind, we might still get Apple’s rumoured MacBook Pro redesign later this fall if past rumours are to be believed.
