Apple reportedly working on 20-inch foldable 2-in-1-like MacBook

Have you ever looked at your MacBook Air/Pro and wished it featured a foldable display?

Probably not, right? Well, that hasn’t stopped Apple from reportedly experimenting with foldable display technology in its laptops. In a new report, reputable display analyst Ross Young (Display Supply Chain Consultants)  says that Apple is developing a foldable laptop/2-in-1 that features a 20-inch display.

“We are now showing Apple in our roadmap for foldable notebooks. We hear there is interest at the largest size yet,” Young said in the report, according to Tom’s Guide.

It’s worth pointing out that though the term “notebook” typically refers to a laptop, there’s a possibility this foldable display rumour could be tied to an entirely different device. Young outlines that Apple’s foldable MacBook features an on-screen keyboard while folded and turns into a monitor when unfolded.

That monitor can then be connected to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, like Apple’s Magic Keyboard, for example. It’s unclear exactly how the device will fold. In a sense, the device sounds very similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro line.

Young speculates that the 20-inch display likely features a 4K or higher resolution. Further, he says that the device likely won’t launch until after 2025 and its release date is potentially set for between 2026 and 2027. The analyst goes on to say that Apple’s often-rumoured foldable iPhone project has been delayed to 2025 outside of its original 2023 to 2024 window.

Given foldable smartphones are a relatively established device category now, thanks to Samsung, it makes sense that Apple is at least experimenting in the space. The tech giant has a history of taking technology other companies have popularized and — at least in most cases — improving on it in a notable way. Given how well-received Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are, it’s unclear how Apple could meaningfully build on the foldable concept.

New EEC filing reveals three new Macs could be on the way

New EEC (Eurasian Economic Commission) filings reveal that Apple might be ready to launch three new Mac computers in the near future, as first reported by AppleInsider.

EEC filings usually take place a few weeks before launch, so the March Apple event timeline works out perfectly.

According to the database, Apple made two new filings on February 8th mentioning models ‘A2615′ and ‘A2686’ under ‘personal computers’ and model ‘A2681’ under ‘portable personal computer.’ The listings also suggest that all three computers will run on “macOS Software Version 12,” i.e. macOS Monterey.

Apart from the above-mentioned nugget of information, the filing doesn’t reveal much else.

Previous rumours indicate that we’ll likely see the new iPhone SE along with a new iPad Air at the Apple March event. The next-gen iPhone SE will reportedly look very similar to its iPhone 8-like 2020 counterpart, only with a faster A15 chip and 5G connectivity, whereas the new iPad Air is rumoured to also get 5G connectivity and a faster A-series chip.

The same report also suggests that Apple could reveal an M2-powered Mac mini at its early March event.

Some 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) users are reporting charging issues

While Apple’s M1 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) has been widely praised by most for its thicker port-filled design and powerful ‘M1 Pro’ and ‘Max’ chips, it appears some users are experiencing charging issues.

As first reported by AppleInsider, several Reddit users are reporting that when their 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) is shut down completely, it doesn’t charge.

You can view the full Reddit post from ‘Trillionaire’ below:

According to the Reddit user, even after following Apple Support’s troubleshooting steps, the issue reappears after the 16-inch MacBook Pro is shut down. Apple seems to be aware of the issue based on a follow-up post by Trillionaire and is currently looking into a solution. A simple solution to the problem would be to charge the laptop while the display is open and not in sleep mode, but given the MacBook Pro (2021)’s expensive price tag, issues like this aren’t something owners should need to deal with.

It also appears that this charging problem only occurs with the 140W charger that comes with the 16-inch M1 Pro and M1 Max, which explains why the problem doesn’t affect the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021).

For what it’s worth, I haven’t encountered this issue with the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021) with an M1 Max chip that I’ve been using for the last few months, though this makes sense given it features a 96W charger. For more on the MacBook Pro 2021, check out my review of the laptop.
