Margot Robbie’s production company filming a movie in Muskoka

For years, Muskoka has been hailed as an idyllic retreat for vacationing celebs, but it appears that Hollywood has finally honed in on the area’s filming appeal.

Starting in mid-August, Canadian director Megan Park, known for her debut film The Fallout and her acting role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, has been shooting her sophomore feature, titled My Old Ass, in the Township of Muskoka Lakes. Actress Margot Robbie’s company, LuckyChap Entertainment, is producing the film.

Scenes are being shot in Port Carling, Bala, the top of Lake Joseph, MacTier, and Huntsville. “Some films rely on grants from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, so we see films being shot in Parry Sound and northward,” says Norah Fountain, executive director of the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce, in an email. “Muskoka gets left out in the cold as the Ontario government doesn’t consider us part of the north. But not this time.”

Filming in the area, which is expected to last until the end of September, has provided an injection into the local economy. “When they said they would need accommodations for over 300 cast and crew, I thought there was no way we would be able to help during high season,” Fountain says. “We are proud that we were able to help connect them with our chamber members who either were able to give them space or help in other ways.”

Hotels were booked, rental agencies provided cottages, and an event company found space for crew trailers. Fountain says one hotel in Port Carling estimates that it added $75,000 to its revenue this summer thanks to the film. In total, Fountain expects the Muskoka Lakes economy to benefit by $4-5 million.

“I know cast and crew reserved restaurants for entire evenings. One local business opened their doors for grab-and-go breakfasts. One marina was used as a shoot location. Permits had to be paid to the Township of Muskoka Lakes…boats were rented, guides were rented,” Fountain says.

Much of the Muskoka Lakes community wanted to be involved. The film hired residents who were interested in learning about the industry and trained them as crew. And the casting director had to ask Fountain not to share her name after she received over 100 requests from locals looking to be background extras.

“After all the ups and downs since March 2020, this was gold for our Muskoka Lakes community. A real economic boon,” Fountain says.

Daniel Bekerman, the film’s line producer, had a lot to do with choosing Muskoka as the shooting location. “[Megan Park] wrote a script that was set in Muskoka. So, when we started discussing the various places we were going to want to film, it comes up that plenty of times a movie is set in New York and you actually film it in Toronto, or it’s set in the Sahara Desert and you shoot it in the desert outside Las Vegas,” Bekerman says. “But I felt that…really we should just properly shoot this right in Muskoka and not cheat a different area for it. I don’t think there’s anywhere else like it with the particular beauty and culture and people that you find here. To me, to be true to the story, it needed to be right in Muskoka.”

Bekerman’s pitch for Muskoka as the filming location was aided by his familiarity with the area. “My great grandfather went to the Carlingford Hotel, dating back to the turn of the 20th century, and then [bought] a cottage on Lake Joseph in the 20s. Our cottage is, I believe, one of the oldest cottages on the lake. It’s called Patience, and it dates back to the late 1800s. So, I’ve been coming here all my life,” he says.

As far as Bekerman knows, My Old Ass is the first feature film to be shot entirely in Muskoka, at least in recent memory. “I’m sure there are a number of films that have had a few days of shooting here and there, but we are 100 per cent entirely shooting in Muskoka,” he says.

Neither Bekerman nor Fountain were willing to share details on the film’s plot or cast, keeping those details tightly wrapped. And there’s yet to be a definitive release date, but it’s likely the film won’t come out until 2024.

There were some musings in a Muskoka Reddit thread about possible star sightings but none have been confirmed.

Margot Robbie shocked to be interviewed by brother

Margot Robbie was left shocked when her brother turned up to interview her about her new movie ‘Peter Rabbit’.

The 27-year-old actress is busy promoting the children’s film in her native Australia, and the ‘I, Tonya’ star was given a surprise when she was getting ready to talk about the project – based on Beatrix Potter’s books – only for her 23-year-old sibling Cameron to arrive to quiz her for MTV Australia.

In the hilarious moment caught on camera, Margot – who grew up on the Gold Coast hinterland – sits down with her co-star Elizabeth Debicki to do some promo when Cameron makes his appearance.

The blonde beauty exclaimed: "Oh my God! What are you doing?! What are you doing?! What is going on right now?! This is so crazy. You’re an interviewer on MTV."

But her playful brother quipped: "Excuse me, this is a professional situation. Can you just calm down?"

Margot voices Peter Rabbit’s sister Flopsy in the animated film alongside James Corden who brings the titular character to life, and Cameron teased that there were similarities between the "dim-witted" rabbit and his older sister.

He said: "It’s funny, in the film I noticed a lot of real life correlations between the character Flopsy [and you]. She seems quite, you know at times airy and dim-witted. Do you think that was intentional casting? I just thought there was a nice correlation between you two."

But Margot – who, along with Cameron, also has older brother Lachlan and sister Anya -retorted: "It’s funny that’s what you took from it, I thought she was maybe insecure and unheard perhaps amongst her siblings. No? Didn’t come across that way?"

The duo aren’t strangers to sibling banter, as Cameron gave Margot a hard time after losing out on the Best Actress Oscar to Frances McDormand at this year’s Academy Awards.

He posted on his Instagram Story: "Not good enough are ya #imstillmumsfavouriteiguess,"

But he followed up with a more sentimental post: "Just kidding. I’m literally crying right here. Not a dry eye in the house."

Margot Robbie still wears her teeth retainers

Margot Robbie is still wearing her retainers because she is "paranoid" something will go wrong with her teeth.

The 27-year-old actress was told by her dental practitioner when she was 14 that she would need to keep the plastic guards in for two years, but she has continued wearing both the bottom one, for teeth grinding, and top one for movement for 10 years.

Appearing on Australia’s ‘The Kyle and Jackie O Show’, the blonde beauty confessed when asked how she coped playing a character with a lisp in ‘Peter Rabbit’: "This is so embarrassing, I actually have two retainers, one for the bottom teeth which is for grinding and one for my top teeth which is just so my teeth don’t move.

"The orthodontist, when I got my braces off when I was 14, said, ‘You’ll need to wear it for two years but I am so paranoid that, 10 years later, I’m still wearing them."

The ‘Suicide Squad’ star revealed she took extreme measures to try and stop her teeth grinding habit by having Botox injected into her muscles inside her mouth.

She said: "I grind my teeth so bad I ended up getting Botox in the muscles there and it stops you from grinding your teeth."

Margot portrays Flopsy the bunny – who suffers from speech problems – in the big screen adaptation of the Beatrix Potter classic.

‘Peter Rabbit’ stars James Corden as the voice of the mischievous bunny created by British children’s author Beatrix Potter and published in the early 1900s.

Meanwhile, Margot is reportedly in talks to star in the Quentin Tarantino-directed ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’.

The Australian-born star – who has recently emerged as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars – is being lined up to play the role of Sharon Tate in the much-anticipated new movie, which is set in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of so-called hippy Hollywood.

The film will tell the story of the murder of Tate and several others in a killing spree instigated by Charles Manson.

Margot could line up alongside Leonardo DiCaprio – who will play a former TV star – and Brad Pitt – his long-time stunt double – in the movie, according to Deadline.

Jimmy Kimmel takes aim at Harvey Weinstein at Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Harvey Weinstein in his opening monologue at the Academy Awards.

The 50-year-old presenter – who fronted the Oscars for the second year in a row on Sunday (03.04.18) – opened the ceremony with a string of jibes at the expense of the disgraced movie producer, who has been blacklisted from Hollywood following a string of sexual harassment allegations.

He said: "The Academy took action last year to expel Harvey Weinstein from their ranks.

"There were a lot of great nominees, but Harvey deserved it the most."

And Jimmy also joked about the reputation of Hollywood men, insisting they should strive to be more like the Oscar statuette.

He quipped: "Oscar is the most beloved and respected man in Hollywood, and there’s a very good reason why. Just look at him.

"Keeps his hands where you can see them, never says a rude word, and most importantly, no penis at all. He is literally a statue of limitations, and that’s the kind of men we need more of in this town."

And the presenter admitted the reforms that had come in Hollywood since the Weinstein scandal broke hadn’t come soon enough.

He said: "What happened with Harvey and what’s happening all over was long overdue. We can’t let bad behavior slide any more. The world is watching us."

But despite the serious subject, Jimmy wasn’t afraid to use humour.

He added: "We need to set an example and the truth is if we are successful here, if we can work together to stop sexual harassment in the workplace, women will only have to deal with harassment all the time at every other place they go."

And referencing ‘The Shape of Water’ – which sees a cleaning lady fall in love with a mysterious river creature – he quipped: "We will always remember this year as the year men screwed up so badly that women started dating fish."

Elsewhere at the ceremony, Jimmy surprised cinemagoers at a nearby screening of ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ by interrupting their viewing to bring snacks along with the likes of Armie Hammer, Margot Robbie, Ansel Elgort Lupita Nyong’o, Mark Hamill, and Guillermo del Toro.

The host, along with ‘Wonder Woman’ actress Gal Gadot, first dropped in on the theatre and said: "I have an announcement to make. You are live on the Oscars right now. We were talking about our appreciation for people who go to the movies and those are you people, so we wanted to say thank you to the moviegoers."

He then brought out the other stars, who handed out sweets, hot dogs and a huge 6ft sandwich to feed the crowd.

Margot Robbie recalls ‘wild time’ on Suicide Squad

Margot Robbie "definitely can’t" reveal the antics of the ‘Suicide Squad’ cast.

The 27-year-old actress appeared on BBC Radio 1 with Nick Grimshaw, taking part in ‘The Heart Rate Monitor Challenge’, where her pulsating heartbeat was monitored as she responded to a series of embarrassing stories from famous co-stars.

Margot squirmed in the make-shift doctor’s chair as her ‘Suicide Squad’ co-star Cara Delevingne brought up trigger words of their past experiences together.

At the mention of the Ginuwine song ‘Pony’, the actress burst into fits of laughter as her heart rate spiked to 133 beats per minute.

However, the Australian beauty admitted that she is sworn to secrecy over the mysterious moment Cara was referring to, and she didn’t want to spill the gossip.

Margot said: "I definitely can’t say. I can’t talk about any of this stuff.

"I would just say it’s a few things that happened when we were shooting ‘Suicide Squad’. Some real experiences!"

The blonde beauty did admit that the cast of the DC Comics film had a "wild time" on set, although she didn’t elaborate any more on the memories.

Margot insisted: "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. It was a wild time, though."

Shockingly, the thing that raised the actress’ heartbeat the most was when Nick showed her a video of the special song dedicated to her by one of her favourite childhood bands, Bullet for My Valentine, to a crowd of 15,000 people that he had lined up for her.

Covering her mouth in shock, she couldn’t contain her excitement, saying: "You are f***ing kidding me. I’m dying, this is like my whole childhood."

When the song ended, Margot told Nick he was her "favourite person in the world", admitting that she was "honestly so touched" that he had arranged the special surprise for her.

She said: "Oh my god I can’t believe this has happened, what a great morning. I mean, I’m half having a heart attack but thank you!"

Margot Robbie thinks her job isn’t very glamorous

Margot Robbie thinks movie sets are more like "glorified construction sites".

The 27-year-old actress may have a successful career on the big screen, but she has admitted she’s envious of her friends who work in offices because they get to slip into smart suits every day, whereas she has to squat on a portaloo and rely on fried food when she’s shooting a film.

Speaking to the Metro newspaper, Margot said: "I feel like my friends who work in offices have more glamorous jobs. They do their make-up, put on a tailored skirt and blouse and go to work. I go to work in my pyjamas and my Ugg boots and we are pretty much on a glorified construction site, sitting in the dirt on plastic chairs using Portaloos and eating fried food.

"That’s what acting actually is. Then a handful of times in the year you get to put on a designer dress and get glammed up."

The blonde beauty – who is up for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her portrayal of Tonya Harding in ‘I, Tonya’ – feels she is a better actor if she cannot recognise herself on screen.

She said: "As long as I don’t look like myself or sound like myself, I’m able to not feel like myself – and if I don’t feel like myself, I feel like I’m doing better acting. Another wonderful thing about acting is getting to do and say things I would never do or say in real life. Tonya got to say a lot of things I would never get to say in real life. Just being as candid as her is sometimes liberating. All I ever do is talk and think about work! I love movies, I love going to the movies, reading scripts, so none of it feels like work. Outside of that, I love travelling, learning something I didn’t know before."

And, although she loves her job, the ‘Suicide Squad’ star hates that she can’t commit to things.

She said: "You miss out on things. People say ‘oh, can you come to my wedding in six months’ time?’

"I can’t tell you what part of the world I’ll be living in in six months."

Margot Robbie expert in saving money

Margot Robbie is an expert in saving money.

The 27-year-old actress produced her latest movie ‘I, Tonya’ and admitted her thrifty ways when she first moved from Australia to Clapham, south London, and shared a three-bedroom apartment with six other people came in very handy.

In an interview with Stylist Magazine, she said: "I can be so f**king thrifty. Saving money is my area of expertise.

"It’s a good skill to have for reallocating funds in a film budget. Any room [in that flat] that wasn’t already a bedroom would become one.

"So we didn’t have any living rooms, just bedrooms. It was all very close-quarters."

Margot also admitted it was "ridiculous" trying to keep her relationship with her now-husband Tom Ackerley – who she married in 2016 after meeting on the set of ‘Suite Francaise’ – a secret from their friends, but they had "fun" trying to keep things quiet.

She said: "Yeah, it was ridiculous for a time. But very fun. We got together young and we’re married now, so it’s great to have all those stories."

When the pair finally came clean about their romance, the rest of their buddies were concerned it would impact on the dynamic of their friendship group, with Margot comparing the situation to old pals-turned-lovers Monica and Chandler in popular sitcom ‘Friends’.

She said: "It was [a bombshell]. It was a crazy time in our past. In ‘Friends’ when Monica and Chandler get together and the rest of them worry that it’s going to mess with the group – that was everyone’s biggest concern.

"We were such a tight-knit, weird family. We do everything together, even now."

Now the couple have moved to America, Margot said that she does miss London life but is hoping to open an Australian pub in LA.

Margot said: "I loved London so much; riding the Tube. Also because the paparazzi can’t follow you.

"I miss walking down the road to go to the pub – we’ve talked a lot about opening an Aussie pub in LA.

"Being in the world and getting to watch people interact, it’s helpful as an actor being able to do that rather than being locked in a car.

"It’s hard to get perspective in LA."

Margot Robbie is considering Neighbours return

Margot Robbie is considering a return to ‘Neighbours’.

The 27-year-old star may have just been nominated for the Best Actress award at this year’s Oscars for her role as Tonya Harding in the ice skating drama film ‘I, Tonya’, but she hasn’t forgotten her roots, and has admitted she’d be willing to reprise her part as Donna Freedman – who she portrayed from 2008 until 2011 – in the Australian soap.

Asked if she’d go back to ‘Neighbours’, Margot told Australia’s Who magazine: "Yeah, I think I would, totally. We could get the whole gang back together."

The blonde beauty – who was born in Queensland – certainly has a lot of respect for the long-running show, as she recently admitted that she has ‘Neighbours’ to thank for kick-starting her career in Hollywood.

Margot also thanked the show’s cast for helping her to mature.

She said recently: "I was 17 when I started on the job and I had just moved from the Gold Coast and didn’t know anyone in Melbourne [where ‘Neighbours’ is filmed].

"Obviously I had never lived on my own before and everyone just pretty much took me under their wing. One of the downsides of leaving home at an early age to chase your dreams is preparedness.

"I was pretty much living on Froot Loops for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everyone was like ‘OK, you will come over to my house’ … Susan Kennedy [Jackie Woodburne] would invite me over once a week and cook me a roast, and Toadie, or Ryan who plays Toadie, helped me do my taxes!"

Meanwhile, Margot found out that she’d been nominated for the prestigious gong at the Oscars while attending a premiere screening of ‘I, Tonya’ in Australia with her family.

She said: "It was the best possible scenario to hear something like that. They plugged the phone into the DJ decks and literally as they did, they announced my name and everyone just started screaming."

Margot Robbie: Neighbours cast made me eat right

Margot Robbie has admitted she didn’t know how to look after herself when she first left home at 17 to star in ‘Neighbours’.

The blonde beauty played Donna Freedman in the Australian TV soap for three years between 2008 and 2011, moving away from her family to live alone in the city for the role.

Margot, now 27, admits she had no idea about how to cook or run a house a first but her co-stars took her under their wing.

Appearing on Australian chat show ‘The Project’, she said: "I was 17 when I started on the job and I had just moved from the Gold Coast and didn’t know anyone in Melbourne. Obviously I had never lived on my own before and everyone just pretty much took me under their wing. I was pretty much living on Froot Loops for breakfast, lunch and dinner!"

But the rest of the cast, including Jackie Woodburne who plays Susan Kennedy and Ryan Moloney, who stars as Toadfish ‘Toadie’ Rebecchi, took it upon themselves to take care of her.

Margot revealed: "Everyone was like, ‘OK, you will come over to my house’ … Susan Kennedy would invite me over once a week and cook me a roast. Toadie, or Ryan who plays Toadie, helped me do my taxes!"

The ‘Suicide Squad’ star also admitted she is absolutely delighted to have been nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as disgraced American figure skater Tonya Harding in ‘I, Tonya’.

Margot revealed she heard about her nomination while attending a premiere screening of the movie in Australia with her family.

She said: "It was the best possible scenario to hear something like that. They plugged the phone into the DJ decks and literally as they did, they announced my name and everyone just started screaming."
