Officials investigating fire at historic marina outside Kitchener, Ont.

On July 30, under a sun-drenched sky, diners were sitting down for a lunchtime meal on the Old Marina Restaurant’s wooden balcony overlooking Puslinch Lake, a 20-minute drive southeast of Kitchener, Ont., when restaurant staff started approaching tables, telling diners they needed to evacuate. The basement had caught fire.

Confronted with black billowing smoke, staff rushed down to the basement with a fire extinguisher. But they were unable to douse the flame. That’s when they called the fire department.

Around 12:45 p.m., the Cambridge Fire Department arrived and were joined by four other departments from neighbouring districts. Restaurant staff managed to evacuate everyone safely from the building before fire services arrived.

Two firefighters from the Cambridge Fire Department attempted to enter the restaurant to find the source of the fire, but were met with high heat and severe smoke which forced them back outside. Instead, “They did what they call a defensive attack, where they put water on the fire from the outside,” explained Puslinch Fire Chief, Tom Mulvey, who was commanding the Puslinch Fire Department.

Fire services bathed the building with water from hoses on the ground and even extended an arm from one of their trucks above the flames, blasting the roof with water. But they were unable to save the building. The fire swept through the wooden structure.

Mulvey estimates the damage caused at around $2 million. The Puslinch Fire Department is in charge of investigating the fire, which they’re doing in conjunction with the restaurant’s insurance company.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but Mulvey says he’s certain it originated in the basement. The investigation is temporarily stalled while the fire department waits for the insurance company to provide the necessary equipment to remove debris from the site. Mulvey says he doesn’t think there was any foul play involved in the fire.

The Old Marina Restaurant has a long history in the community, tracing its roots back to the 1920s when the City of Guelph erected the structure as a dance hall. By the 1950s, it had evolved into a marina, offering engine repairs, boat rentals, and even a waterski school. It wasn’t until 1993 that the McClintock family transformed the venue into a restaurant.

This is the second fire in the Old Marina Restaurant’s history. In 2005, the building burned to the ground, only to be reopened in 2007.

For days after the July 30th fire, members of the community came out to look at the restaurant’s burnt husk. “I think everybody’s devastated. I think it was a meeting point for people,” Mulvey says. “The McClintock family that owns the building are well-liked and have a lot of friends, and I think that everybody feels what happened was really terrible.”

A relative of the McClintock’s, Evan Cook, started a GoFundMe page to help finance any of the restaurant’s costs not covered by insurance. As of the time of publishing, the page had raised $28,000 of its $100,000 goal.

Muskoka Lakes man charged after excavator rampage at marina

Muskoka’s Pride of Rosseau marina received some unwanted renovations last week after a Muskoka Lakes man destroyed the marina’s buildings with an excavator.

On July 21, officers from the Bracebridge Ontario Provincial Police detachment arrived on scene just after 9 p.m. The officers arrested the 59-year-old man operating the excavator and charged him with mischief over $5,000 under the Criminal Code of Canada.

A video of the incident posted online shows the excavator’s arm swinging back and forth through the marina’s dock store situated near the water’s edge. Splinters of wood fly through the air. In the video, it appears that at least a third of the building is destroyed. The OPP confirmed that there was significant damage to the building.

On Twitter, Sharon, Ont. native Declan Bondy posted photos of the crime scene, claiming that the perpetrator first tried to set several boats on fire before damaging at least two of the marina’s buildings with the excavator.

Community members online are speculating that the accused was a disgruntled employee of the marina. The Pride Marine Group did not respond to requests for comment.

The OPP wouldn’t confirm the accused’s identity, telling Cottage Life that it would not be releasing any further information at this time.

The Pride of Rosseau marina, which sits on the Joseph River between Lake Joseph and Lake Rosseau, has been selling boats and serving gas to customers since 2005. The marina is owned by the Pride Marine Group, which operates nine other marinas throughout Ontario.

The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge at a later date to answer the charge.

Matt LeBlanc to retire in his 50s

Matt LeBlanc plans on retiring in his 50s.

The ‘Friends’ legend turns 50 on July 25 and is starting to "take stock" of his life and wants to achieve everything he had ever planned to in his professional life in the near future.

The dark-haired hunk has reportedly decided to call time on his career in acting and television so he can have a more "personal life" and spend more time with his 13-year-old daughter Marina, whom he has with his former model ex-wife Melissa McKnight.

According to the Daily Star newspaper, Matt said on set of his motoring show ‘Top Gear’: "I want to retire in my early fifties.

"I want everything set up. Otherwise you look and go ’50! Whooo, where did that go?’

"I’m beginning to take stock. I want retirement accomplished."

The ‘Episodes’ star previously spoke of how much he enjoys hanging out with his daughter and cherishes the time because he knows she won’t always want to be with him.

He said: "I love it when I’m with my daughter. We make bacon and eggs and sit and talk over how she slept, what she dreamed about, what we should do that day.

"I’m clinging on to those moments because I’m not Rihanna so she won’t want to hang out for much longer.

"Is she a Rihanna fan? Oh my God, I know every word to every song. Please don’t stop the music …"

Matt previously said Marina refuses to watch ‘Friends’ because he was in it.

The 49-year-old actor shot to fame playing Joey Tribbiani in the sitcom, and though the teenager’s friends have been watching reruns of the series, she has no interest in tuning in because she doesn’t want to "overdose" on seeing her dad.

He said: "I don’t think she thinks I’m too cool.

"I think her friends at school are watching ‘Friends’ now, that’s about the age they get into it, but she, she can’t be bothered. She just couldn’t care less.

She’s seen it, but it’s her dad.

"She sees me enough…she’s like, ‘Overdose on my dad, I don’t want that.’"
