Hearthstone-inspired Marvel Snap now available on mobile and PC

Marvel Snap, a new collectible card game based on the mega popular Marvel Universe, is now officially available on mobile and in early access on PC.

Notably, Marvel Snap was developed by Second Dinner, a new studio made up of many ex-Blizzard developers, including former Hearthstone director Ben Brode.

In Marvel Snap, you’ll assemble a deck of cards featuring hundreds of Marvel heroes and villains, including big names like Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, Star-Lord, Daredevil and Deadpool, to lesser-known characters like Squirrel Girl, The Hood, Medusa and Sunspot.

Matches, meanwhile, have been designed to be mobile-friendly and bite-sized at about three minutes each. They play out in a grid containing 50-plus Marvel locations, including Wakanda, Asgard, the Baxter Building, Stark Tower and the Triskelion.

In the grid, you’ll place your character cards, each of which has an associated ‘Power,’ and the player with the highest Power level wins. Most cards and locations also have special effects that either give you a boost or set your opponent back. You can play against the computer or other players online.

As with any free-to-play game, there are microtransactions in Marvel Snap, although they work a little differently than you’d expect. Thankfully, you can’t actually buy cards to pay-to-win, which levels the playing field a bit. Instead, you can spend real money on variants of cards you already own that feature different artwork but are functionally the same.

That said, you can also fork over cash on credits to upgrade the rarity of cards, which increases your collection level and, in turn, lets you unlock more cards. Therefore, there is certainly a gameplay advantage from using real money, although it’s not as direct as buying cards outright.

Otherwise, the response to Marvel Snap has been quite positive during the early access period. You can download the game for yourself on iOS, Android and Steam.

It’s also worth noting that a fun ad for the launch was also released, featuring none other than Samuel L. Jackson reprising his long-running Marvel role of Nick Fury:

Second Dinner also has released a content update roadmap, promising regular new cards, locations, cosmetics, challenges and more. You can read more on that here.

Montreal’s EA Motive working on single-player Iron Man game

A brand-new Iron Man game is officially in development at Montreal-based EA Motive.

In a press release, EA described the game as “single-player, third-person, action-adventure” featuring an “original narrative” focused on Tony Stark and his armoured alter ego. EA has come under fire in the past for emphasizing multiplayer over single-player, so the confirmation that the currently untitled Iron Man game is a narrative-driven solo experience will certainly be reassuring for many.

Notably, the project is being overseen by executive producer Olivier Proulx, who most recently worked on Eidos Montreal’s critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. However, the untitled Iron Man game is said to be in “early development,” meaning it’s likely years from an actual release.

Interestingly, we’ve never gotten a big-budget Iron Man game in the vein of Marvel’s Spider-Man or Batman: Arkham, despite the character’s massive popularity in the past 10-plus years due to Robert Downey, Jr.’s version of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sega did release poorly received two licensed games based on the first two Iron Man films, but otherwise, the closest thing to an “Iron Man game” came in 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers.

In addition to Iron Man, Motive is working on a remake of the original Dead Space game, set for release on January 27th, 2023. The Canadian developer previously worked on 2020’s Star Wars: Squadrons and the single-player campaign for 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II.

Iron Man is just one of several Marvel games that are currently in development. Some of what we know about includes PlayStation-owned Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine and Uncharted creator Amy Hennig’s Captain America and Black Panther team-up title for Skydance. It’s rumoured that EA is also working on a Black Panther game, although nothing has been confirmed.

What announcements are you most excited for this tech event season?

It’s that time of the year when massive tech companies like Apple and Google launch new smartphones and other devices.

This September, we’re expecting four new iPhone 14 handsets and at least a few Apple Watches. In October, we’ll likely see Google’s Pixel 7 series devices and probably even refreshed iPad Pro tablets. We’re also expecting Microsoft to launch new Surface tablets, laptops and maybe even a Surface Phone.

Alongside new smartphones, tablets and laptops, we’ll also get the first-ever Disney and Marvel Games Showcase in September and, potentially, similar events from PlayStation and Nintendo.

I’m pretty excited for the upcoming iPhone 14 and its rumoured new design, but I’m also looking forward to the Pixel 7 and what Disney’s Lorcana card game has in store.

Let us know what you’re looking forward to this tech season in the comments below.

Disney has announced several new titles that will hit Disney+ worldwide on September 8th as part of its second annual Disney+ Day event.

  • Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory — docuseries
  • Frozen and Frozen 2 Sing-Alongs — lyrics-supported versions of the animated films of the same name

Disney and Marvel to host big games showcase in September

Disney has announced a brand-new “Disney and Marvel Games Showcase,” which will be held on Friday, September 9th as part of its D23 Expo.

Kicking off at 1pm PT/4pm ET, the event will feature reveals from Disney & Pixar Games, Marvel Games, Lucasfilm Games, and 20th Century Games. Kinda Funny’s Blessing Adeoye, Jr. will host.

In terms of what to expect, Disney says there will be “all-new announcements” on top of new reveals from titles like the Canadian-made Animal Crossing-esque sim, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Marvel’s Midnight SunsLego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and a “sneak peek at the upcoming Marvel ensemble” from Skydance New Media. It’s worth noting that Amy Hennig, the creator of PlayStation’s beloved Uncharted series, is overseeing the Skydance Marvel games.

The announcement trailer also teases Ubisoft’s recently delayed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora game, and if the publisher is already part of the event, it could reveal more details about its mysterious open-world Star Wars game. Xbox’s Machine Games (Wolfenstein) is also working on an Indiana Jones game, of which we also haven’t seen anything. It remains to be seen whether either Lucasfilm title will make an appearance.

It could also go either way when it comes to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2Marvel’s Wolverine and Kingdom Hearts 4. The former two games are from PlayStation’s Insomniac, so it’s possible they may appear at a separate PS5 showcase down the line. And given that Kingdom Hearts is developed by Square Enix, KH4 may be saved for a standalone event from the Japanese publisher. There’s also the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, although it was recently reported to be on hold, so it’s unlikely we’ll see that soon.

Those interested in tuning into the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase can do so via:

D23 is set to run from September 9th to 11th in Anaheim, California and feature a slew of Disney-related programming, including more announcements from Marvel Studios about its film and Disney+ series slate.

Chris Evans retires his iPhone 6s, says he’ll miss the Home Button

After many, many years, actor Chris Evans is retiring his iPhone 6s. The notable actor, who portrayed Marvel’s Captain America, the WW2 soldier out of time, is saying goodbye to his seven-year-old phone.

On Instagram, Evans wrote that he and his faithful iPhone 6s “had a good run.” Evans continued to reminisce about his time spent with the phone over the years. Part of the transition process from the old iPhone 6s to the new iPhone 13 was giving up the Home Button.

As the humorous, yet slightly poetic post continues, Evans says he won’t miss the struggles of maintaining the phone’s battery life or taking “grainy pictures” on the 12-megapixel camera of the iPhone 6s. “It was a wild ride,” Evans concludes.

Evans, whose latest film was Pixar’s Lightyear, received a resounding number of supportive comments about his iPhone 6s. Celebrities and friends came to congratulate the actor for stepping into 2022 with both feet. The Hidden Figures alum Octavia Spencer wrote: “OMG! I just gave up my home button last week. Transitioning to the 13 has been easier than I thought. So…. #IFeelYouBuddy.” Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Greenberg, and Yvette Nicole Brown also all chimed in as well.

Some fans also jumped in to speak their mind. One user wrote “We about to get selfies in 4K… I’m gonna start panicking.”

Evans’ determined use of the iPhone 6s became a bit of an internet meme over the years. He’s been spotted on set and in public, championing the use of the iPhone 6s. All good things must come to an end, however.
