Former Mass Effect devs show off new fantasy game, Nightingale

A new trailer for the Canadian-made game Nightingale was revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022.

It’s a shared world survival-crafting title from Edmonton-based Inflexion Games, a new studio made up of former BioWare (Mass Effect) developers, including former general manager Aaron Flynn.

Notably, the game is set in a Victorian fantasy world of Nightingale, which gives it a visually distinct look. In Nightingale, you’ll be able to play alone or with other people as you gather materials, craft new items and face off against all kinds of twisted creatures.

The trailer showcases some crafting gameplay, with the character harvesting resources with an axe, as well as fighting against spiders and other beasts with shotguns, crossbows and more.

Check out the gameplay trailer for yourself:

A release date for Nightingale hasn’t yet been confirmed, but you can sign up for updates on the game via its website.

BioWare seems to confirm Commander Shepard for new Mass Effect in now-updated page

Edmonton-based developer BioWare has seemingly leaked a key story detail for its untitled Mass Effect game.

As spotted by YouTube user MrHulthen, the official BioWare Gear store’s listing for a lithograph based on the upcoming game indicated that original Mass Effect trilogy hero Commander Shepard will return:

“The show goes on. Shepard’s final quest may have ended the threat of the Reapers but at great cost including Earth itself. While Shepard and the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are left wondering what’s next.”

However, it’s since been updated to remove any mention of Shepard:

“The show goes on… The threat of the Reapers might have been ended, but at great cost including Earth itself. While the survivors are left to pick up the pieces, fans are left wondering what’s next.”

It’s quite curious, considering this came from an official BioWare page. Since its formal reveal in December 2020, details for the upcoming Mass Effect have been scarce. All BioWare has confirmed is that the game is picking up after the events of Mass Effect 3 and that fan-favourite Shepard companion Liara is returning.

Note: spoilers for Mass Effect 3 to follow:

What’s most interesting about BioWare’s gaffe, however, is that Shepard dies in all but one of Mass Effect 3‘s possible endings. While some fans have speculated on the limited marketing material that is available that Shepard is alive in the new Mass Effect, BioWare has remained coy, simply saying there are “at least five” surprises in the official poster.

In any case, a core appeal of the Mass Effect series its “choose-your-own-adventure” branching narrative. Should Shepard really be alive in the new game, that would make that one Mass Effect 3 ending canon, which would, ostensibly, run counter to the choice-driven ethos of the series. It remains to be seen how BioWare will ultimately thread that needle.

What we do know, though, is that the game is in “early development,” so it likely won’t release for a number of years. In the meantime, BioWare has Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, last year’s remastered collection of the original trilogy, as well as the upcoming fourth Dragon Age game.

Amazon ‘nearing’ deal with EA to develop series based on Canadian-made Mass Effect

Amazon is close to signing a deal with Electronic Arts to develop a TV series based on BioWare Edmonton’s massively popular Mass Effect franchise.

As first reported by Deadline, this is part of Prime Video’s larger effort to invest in big original programming alongside The Wheel of Time, which premiered last week, and its 2022 Lord of the Rings series.

No further details were revealed, so it’s not yet clear whether the Mass Effect show would even be live-action or animated. The original trilogy followed human soldier Commander Shepard as they assemble a team to stop an extinction-level threat from the machine race known as the Reapers. That said, 2017’s much-maligned Mass Effect: Andromeda was about a different cast of characters exploring a different galaxy. Presumably, the series would draw from Commander Shepard’s popular adventures, although it’s unclear at this time.

It’s also worth noting that Superman actor Henry Cavill seemingly teased his involvement in a Mass Effect project earlier this year. Of course, that’s by no means confirmation that he’s a part of this potential Prime Video series, but it certainly seems plausible. Cavill is a noted gamer, having landed the role of Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher, in part, due to his love of CD Projekt’s eponymous video game series.

Mass Effect film adaptation was confirmed to be in development way back in 2010, the same year Mass Effect 2 was released. At the time, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. were working on the project, although it ultimately fell through. Speaking on that cancelled project earlier this year, Mass Effect Legendary Edition project director Mac Walters said BioWare believed that the property would be better suited for the TV format.

It makes sense that Hollywood has been trying to adapt Mass Effect for quite some time now. On the one hand, the series features incredibly rich lore that certainly befits a big-budget adaptation. It’s also a critical and commercial success, leading fans to clamor for details on the untitled next game in the series.

However, one of the key tenets of Mass Effect is the player’s ability to make a slew of choices that affect the outcome of the narrative. Naturally, that element would be lost in an adaptation, unless it were some Black Mirror: Bandersnatch-style “choose-your-own-adventure” experience. Even still, that would be practically impossible to sustain over the course of a series, especially on the level of Mass Effect, which features a litany of decisions both big and small to make.

Assuming the Amazon-EA deal goes through, it remains to be seen how a Mass Effect TV adaptation might be approached.
