Federal government partners with Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz to cement its EV position

The federal government has partnered with two German automakers to deal with the growing demand for clean transportation.

The government signed memoranda of understanding (MOU) with Volkswagen AG and Mercedes-Benz AG to ensure collaboration with the companies, secure Canada’s position on manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) and their batteries and attract further investment in the space.

The government’s agreement with Volkswagen focuses on sustainable battery manufacturing and setting up a PowerCo office in Canada. PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery company, launched in July.

The Mercedes-Benz partnership focuses on collaboration among Canadian EV companies and supporting a sustainable mineral supply chain, among other factors.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne visited Germany back in May. A press release announcing the MOUs states this trip, where he met with industry leaders in the automotive sector, encouraged the agreements.

“By partnering with Volkswagen and Mercedes, Canada is strengthening its leadership role as a world-class automotive innovation ecosystem for clean transportation solutions,” Champagne said.

“Canada is committed to building a strong and reliable automotive and battery supply chain here in North America to help the world meet global climate goals.”

Mercedes-Benz launches fragrance for men

Just like Porsche, Hummer, and others, automaker Daimler is cashing in on name recognition with the launch of a new fragrance for men called Mercedes-Benz.

Unveiled at the annual exhibition of the duty free and travel retail industry organization known as TFWA (Tax Free World Association), in Cannes, France, the debut men’s fragrance from Mercedes-Benz has been composed by renowned perfumer Olivier Cresp of Firmenich.

Ladies, start your engines as the fragrance combines luscious woody notes with floral freshness. The cool opening top note features Calabrian bergamot, lemon essence and Italian mandarin.

The middle heart note is a warm, spicy mix of bourbon pepper, nutmeg, violet and galbanum resin. The base note provides a spicy finish to the perfume and includes American cedar wood, vetyver grass and patchouli.

The simple bottle design is masculine, modern and elegant. The distinctive perfume fits right in with Mercedes-Benz expansion of its range of high-end accessories, which includes watches and eye wear.

Mercedes-Benz perfume will be available from selected retailers in the first quarter of 2012, as an eau de toilette, aftershave, deodorant, and shower and body gel.

The world of fragrance is not new to Mercedes-Benz: the company already offers exclusively-developed perfumes for the atomizers in its Maybach models among others. In the limited edition Maybach Zeppelin, for example, an acrylic ball is used to dispense a custom fragrance throughout the cabin at the push of a button.

The angelic new face of Mercedes-Benz

German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has selected former Victoria Secret Angel Karolina Kurkova to be the face of its CLS-class executive sedan, reports Coco Perez. The Czech model takes over from Milla Jovovich, whose campaign for the E-Class Cabriolet debuted in July 2010.

The new monochromatic Captivated campaign was created by fashion photographer Craig McDean and creative director David James and is intended to give the coupe a more feminine and fashionable image, while still conveying power.

The new campaign will launch early next year at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin during its January 19-22 run, but several photographs were leaked early on December 6. The images show Kurkova dressed all in black in front of the silver car with a mirrored backdrop. Although leaked photos are in colour, those included in the official campaign will be in black and white only.

Kurkova, 26, was ranked as one of the top-earning models of 2007 by Forbes, and in 2008, was voted world’s sexiest woman by E! Only 16 at the time, she was one of the youngest models ever to grace the cover of Vogue magazine in 2001. Since this auspicious start, she’s modelled for the biggest names in the industry, including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Vera Wang.

She describes the CLS as "a beautifully smooth and luxurious car that immediately appealed to me. It has these fascinating contours that I wanted to convey with my body language during the shooting."

Mercedes-Benz Gets Electric

Wilfried Steffan of Mercedes UK revealed during
an interview with Auto Express that new types of cars will soon be offered to their clientele.  He said, “It won’t be long before you see a Mercedes that offers all three forms of propulsion. That’s electric, hybrid-electric and fuel only.”

Last January, at the Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes presented the B-Zero concept, which is expected to reach the market in 2011.  The hybrid can run solely on electricity for 100 kilometres.

According to the magazine, Mercedes could make the car even more economical by integrating a high performance diesel engine, although the brand has not confirmed intentions as such.
