Michael J Fox laughs at disease

Michael J. Fox "can’t stop laughing" at the symptoms of his Parkinson’s disease.

The ‘Back to the Future’ actor – who was diagnosed with the condition in 1991 – admits he always sees the funny side of the tremors he experiences, particularly when he’s trying to do something kind like make coffee for his wife Tracy Pollan.

He told AARP The Magazine: "The truth is that on most days, there comes a point where I literally can’t stop laughing at my own symptoms.

"Just the other morning I come into the kitchen.

"I pour a cup — a little trouble there. Then I put both hands around the cup. She’s watching. ‘Can I get that for you, dear?’ ‘Nah, I got it!’

"Then I begin this trek across the kitchen. It starts off bad. Only gets worse. Hot java’s sloshing onto my hands, onto the floor."

Though the 55-year-old star admits his symptoms can be distracting, he is thankful "none of them hurt".

He added: "The only real pain I get is in my feet, which sometimes shuffle and curl up in cramps when I’m sleeping.

"Which is why I keep a very stiff pair of shoes on the floor next to my bed."

Michael went public with his diagnosis in 1998 and he admits he eventually started to laugh at the way people looked at him with "dread".

He said: "It was easy for me to tune in to the way other people were looking into my eyes and seeing their own fear reflected back.

"I’d assure them that ‘I’m doing great’ — because I was.

"After a while, the disconnect between the way I felt and the dread people were projecting just seemed, you know, funny."

The former ‘Good Wife’ actor recalled being reduced to tears when boxing legend and fellow Parkinson’s sufferer Muhammad Ali – who died last year – called him to offer reassurance about their shared battle.

He said: "In this raspy, paper-thin voice, he said, ‘Aahhhhh … Michael, now that you’re in it, we’ll win this fight.’

"What could I say? Sitting there alone listening to Muhammad Ali, this giant — I was welling up, almost openly weeping."

Katie Couric’s star-studded 60th birthday

Katie Couric celebrated her 60th birthday with array of stars including Michael J. Fox and Meg Ryan.

The news anchor celebrated her milestone birthday in Times Square, New York City, over the weekend, and the party – which was organized by her husband John Molner – played host to a number of famous faces, including the 55-year-old actor and the ‘When Harry Met Sally’ actress.

According to the New York Post newspaper the star-studded guest list also featured the likes of Julianne Moore, Julianna Margulies, Sheryl Crow, Samantha Bee, Drew Brees, Mariska Hargitay and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The bash was also attended by a number of big names from American television networks, with CNN chief Jeff Zucker, NBC news head Andy Lack, and NBC executive Dick Ebersol.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb from the ‘Today’ show – where Katie has recently wrapped up a week as a guest anchor – were also in attendance.

According to the publication, ‘Today’ show host Matt Lauer was supposed to make an appearance at the bash, but failed to attend due to a snowstorm that prevented him returning from the Hamptons.

And it wasn’t all about the celebrities, as Katie also invited friends from her time at University, as well as her two daughters Carrie and Ellie.

Whilst Max Weinberg provided the music, singer Richard Marx was also present at the event, and one party-goer told the publication he "sang especially for Katie".

Michael J. Fox was told he’d be ‘disabled by now’

Michael J. Fox was told he would be "pretty much disabled" by now.

The 55-year-old actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease – a progressive condition which affects movement for which there is no cure – in 1991 aged 29, but has defied medical predictions and carried on working.

He said: "I was diagnosed 25 years ago, and I was only supposed to work for another 10 years. I was supposed to be pretty much disabled by now. I’m far from it. This is as bad as I get, and I can still go to the store and go marketing."

While his tremors, one of the side effects of the disease, are not as bad as they used to be, Michael still has balance issues from time to time, but it hasn’t stopped him working as he starred as Louis Canning in ‘The Good Wife’ from 2010 up until earlier this year.

He said: "The biggest problem I have now is balance. That’s kind of tricky because you fall down a couple of times at 55 and you realise that you’re not 25."

The father-of-four’s three daughters, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 21, and 14-year-old Esmé were all born after his diagnosis, while his son Sam, 27, was born beforehand, and he admits they don’t define him simply as someone with Parkinson’s.

He added to Haute Living magazine: "I mean, they grew up with this. It’s all they know, and I think if you asked them to describe me, the ninth thing they would say would be that I had Parkinson’s."

In 2000, the ‘Back to the Future’ star set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and since then the foundation has funded an incredible $650 million to research in an attempt to achieve the star’s goal of finding a cure for the disease.

The fundraising ideas have included a New York City benefit show in 2013, where the likes of Coldplay performed, and earlier this year the foundation held a raffle to raise awareness of the disease which raised $6.75 million.

The full interview with Michael appears in Haute Living’s November/December issue.

Michael J Fox’s kids haven’t seen Back to the Future

Michael J. Fox’s kids have never seen ‘Back to the Future’.

The 54-year-old actor is best known for playing Marty McFly in the 1985 time-travelling adventure and though the film is still hugely popular today, his children Sam, 26, Aquinnah and Schuyler, 20, and 13-year-old Esme – who he has with wife Tracy Pollan – are not among its fans.

He said: ”Ironically, for a time-traveling movie, there was a timelessness about it. Kids now like it. Though my kids haven’t watched it. Or, if they have, they haven’t told me.”

And Michael – who suffers from Parkinson’s disease – admitted he was even considering giving up acting before he landed the role in the movie.

Speaking at a fan convention in London at the weekend, he said: ”I was thinking of working on the fish dock or joining the military like my dad. Then suddenly I found myself on a set with Steven Spielberg.

”[I was] very overwhelmed by the whole experience.

”The nadir and the peak of my career happened at the same time.”

Filming didn’t always run smoothly on the movie though, as the actor was repeatedly struck by the doors of the iconic gull-winged DeLorean car which his character drove through space and time.

He joked: ”I wish I had a gag reel of every time I got whacked by that car door.

”[The reel] would be like 30 seconds of ‘whack, whack!’ ”

Robert Zemeckis: I’ll block a Back to the Future remake

Robert Zemeckis will block any attempt to make another ‘Back to the Future’ movie.

The 63-year-old director – who created and directed the original sci-fi movies, starring Michael J. Fox – has admitted that while another film would be commercially successful, he hopes it never comes to fruition.

Asked if he’d like to make another ‘Back to the Future’ film, Robert said: ”Oh, God no.

”That can’t happen until both [co-writer Bob Gale] and I are dead. And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.”

What’s more, the director said it’d be difficult to do a remake as the original story and the movie’s stars are so iconic.

He told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: ”I mean, to me, that’s outrageous. Especially since it’s a good movie.

”It’s like saying ‘Let’s remake ‘Citizen Kane’. Who are we going to get to play Kane?’ What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?”

The original ‘Back to the Future’ movie was released in July 1985 and has made close to a billion dollars worldwide.

Michael J Fox sues research lab

Michael J. Fox is suing a medical research laboratory.

The ‘Back to the Future’ star – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1991 – and his eponymous foundation filed a lawsuit against New Jersey laboratory Coriell Institute for Medical Research on Friday (03.10.14) claiming the clinic mishandled 25,000 study samples, destroying years of progress in Parkinson’s research.

The lawsuit – for breach of contract and negligence – claims the company failed to properly store samples after an employee left a freezer door open and as a result, the thawed medical specimans are now unsuitable for testing.

The not-for-profit organisation claim in the legal documents that over $3.5 million of research material was ruined, considerably setting back their five-year research project.

The 53-year-old actor – who has children Sam, 25, twins Aquinnah and Schuyler, 19, and Esme, 12, with wife Tracy Pollan -has previously claimed the neurological disorder has ”enriched” his life because it made him step back and appreciate what was important.

He said: ”If I didn’t have Parkinson’s then my life would have been more of the same – acting, travelling and being away from my family.

”My illness forced me to spend time with my family, to work on my foundation, and my life is so much richer because of it. It’s altered my reality is such a positive way.”

Michael J. Fox nearly quit because of Broderick

Michael J. Fox nearly quit acting because of Matthew Broderick.

The ‘Back to the Future’ star almost left Hollywood to work as a builder in his native Canada because he kept losing out on roles to ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ actor Matthew.

He told the New York Post newspaper: ”In 1982, I was desperate to have a job in Los Angeles.

”I owed money, and my phone was cut off. I was selling sections of my sectional sofa. I was ready to go back to Canada and pick up nails on my brother’s construction site.”

Michael explained how his luck changed when he was cast in ‘Family Ties’, adding: ”They [initially] wanted Matthew Broderick. He’d usually go in first for auditions, and you’d hear hands shaking. I was always losing jobs to Matthew Broderick.”

‘Family Ties’ led to ‘Back to the Future’ which turned Michael into a global star and paved the way for further success with films including ‘Teen Wolf’ and two ‘Back to the Future’ sequels.

He returned to TV in the 90s with comedy series ‘Spin City’ but was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which led to him announcing a ”semi-retirement” in 2000.

However, Michael continues to act, and currently stars in ‘The Michael J. Fox Show’ which is loosely based on his own life.

Michael was also honored with the New York Apple Award at the Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards earlier this month.

Michael J. Fox to star in new TV show

Michael J. Fox is set to return to TV screens.

The 51-year-old actor – who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 – will come out of his early retirement to star in an upcoming Sony Pictures Television comedy in 2013 which is inspired by his own life.

He is teaming up with ‘Easy A’ director Will Gluck and writer Sam Laybourne, who has worked on ‘Cougar Town’ and ‘Arrested Development’, Vulture reports.

Michael rose to fame in 1980s sitcom ‘Family Ties’ before making his big screen debut in ‘Back to the Future’ as time-travelling teen Marty McFly.

The actor then starred in the hugely popular political sitcom ‘Spin City’, but quit his television career in 2000 to focus on his health and set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help find a cure for the degenerative condition.

He has made several minor guest appearances on TV shows since, however, including ‘Rescue Me’, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ‘The Good Wife’. Michael also had a recurring role on comedy ‘Boston Legal’.

The star told ABC News in May that his new drug regimen is allowing him to take on more roles because his tics are under control.

Pam’s still got it

According to Britain’s The Sun paper, Pamela Anderson recently showed how amazing she looks at 42.

The former Baywatch star was simply ravishing in a revealing silver swimsuit during a 2010 Spring/Summer fashion show in New York for A-Muse by Richie Rich. She is the designer’s favourite muse.

Anderson wowed fans at the event with her outfit that left little to the imagination. The bathing suit did not have much front and really showed off her assets.

Pamela Anderson was one of the Canadian celebrities who took part in a benefit show to help Haiti on January 22. She joined stars like Céline Dion, James Cameron, Michael J. Fox, The Tragically Hip and Jason Reitman to raise money for the reconstruction effort in that country. It was broadcast on CBC, CTV and Global and was hosted by Cheryl Hickey, Ben Mulroney and George Stroumboulopoulos.
