Cowboys: Getting Mazi Smith is like “Christmas”

With the 26th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys decided to beef up their defense by taking University of Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith. And needless to say, they’re excited to have him.

“It’s like Christmas,” head coach Mike McCarthy said from Smith’s first official press conference. “When you look at all the work that goes into it, going back to his [Official] 30 visit, and just what a great fit he is for us … I just want him to be himself. He is a great fit for us.”

Meanwhile, team executives also are thrilled to have Smith in town, saying that it absolutely does feel like the holiday that everyone waits for all year!

“We tell these young men, like Mazi, you’re here for a reason [on an Official 30 visit],” said Executive Vice President and Director of Player Personnel Stephen Jones. “We have a sincere interest in you. As you know, most of our picks have come out of that group of 30. He’s very comfortable and you can just see his energy.”

“You can see it in his face that he loves ball, he loves everything about it. All the coaches that met with him agree that he’d be a great fit in this organization, and for him to fall down there to us and for us to have the opportunity to pick him, I feel like Mike. I feel like it’s Christmas.”

Cowboys fans, does it feel like Christmas for you to have Mazi Smith?

McCarthy: Door is open for Ezekiel Elliott return

The Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with 2016 1st round draft pick Ezekiel Elliott earlier this month after the popular running back posted career low numbers in 2022 of only 876 yards and 12 total touchdowns. While the move was met with varying reactions from the Cowboys fan base, quarterback Dak Prescott and owner/general manager Jerry Jones didn’t make any secret that it was a difficult decision.

Head coach Mike McCarthy said the same, saying nobody felt good about releasing the longtime Cowboys player.

“You know, no one felt good about that,” he said. “I mean, Zeke has such a bright light to him too. He’s a great teammate. There’s so much love for him in the building, but you get to these spots, you know, the longer you’re in this league, these are tough decisions. Very difficult decisions. Very difficult for Dak (Prescott). You know, I’ve had a number of conversations with Dak, but it’s not easy.”

But, could McCarthy see a scenario in which Elliott actually returns at some point to the Cowboys? Apparently so.

“Yeah, definitely,” he responded. “I think you always keep the door open. Absolutely.”

Cowboys fans, would you be comfortable with Elliott eventually coming back and suiting up for the Cowboys once more?

Is Mike McCarthy on the hot seat?

The season for the Dallas Cowboys once again ends prematurely at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, and they’re heading into another offseason of uncertainty. There are several high profile free agents on the roster who may not be back for next season, while the coaching staff has already seen a major shakeup with the departure of several faces.

However, head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t going anywhere, and in his words, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones doesn’t want him to go anywhere for quite a while. But what do pundits think?

According to a recent list from Bleacher Report, McCarthy is No. 2 on their list of NFL coaches on the hot seat:

  1. “This isn’t to say that Jones didn’t say that (he wants him in town as like as Tom Landry was). Or that McCarthy has done a bad job. But racking up regular-season wins isn’t the goal in Dallas. Neither is making the playoffs. The aim is the same every year: win the Super Bowl. The Cowboys haven’t even played in an NFC Championship Game in nearly three decades, and McCarthy is 1-2 in the postseason.
  2. If McCarthy’s squad makes another early exit from the playoffs in 2023 (or misses them altogether), it may not be his team anymore.”

How much longer do you believe that McCarthy has with the Cowboys?

Cowboys have requirement for Michael Gallup in 2023

Even though the Dallas Cowboys made the call to bring aboard wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans to pair along with CeeDee Lamb as weapons for quarterback Dak Prescott, they still have big plans for Michael Gallup in 2023.

Gallup, whom the Cowboys selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, tore his ACL and appeared in only nine games during the 2021 season. Last year, he was limited to just 39 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns.

However, according to The Dallas Morning News, head coach Mike McCarthy has told Gallup that he’ll be more heavily featured in the offensive attack this season.

“I think Michael Gallup has a great chance to take the next step,” team executive vice president Stephen Jones said during the NFL Scouting Combine in February. “Know what he can do. Coming off a major ACL, I think it’s pretty typical, you know, that guys improve, [and] from the first year to the second year is usually the jump. And I fully expect Michael to do that, and then I think we’ve got a good competitive group after that. Can we look at maybe improving it? Absolutely.”

Gallup racked up 424 receiving yards along with four touchdowns on 39 catches during the 2022 NFL season. He’s averaged a total of 53 receptions for 819 yards and four touchdowns in his four seasons.

What kind of season are you expecting from Gallup for the Cowboys in 2023?
