Cottage real estate region: Acadian Coast

New Brunswick is Canada’s only officially bilingual province. Many of its vibrant Francophone communities are arrayed along its east coast, known as the Acadian Coast. Here, cottage country has traditionally meant Shediac, a 20-minute drive from Moncton. The town is the self-proclaimed lobster capital of the world, and the July festival devoted to this succulent crustacean is one of many family-oriented events. But with such a short commute to the city, many Shediac cottages are becoming year-round residences.

Farther north along the shore, waterfront dwellings tend to be more affordable. However, you’ll likely find these in a fishing village rather than in a cottage community. For those willing to try a more remote area, there are beautiful beaches on Chaleur Bay. Bathurst is an attractive regional centre with a tradition of multi-generational family cottages on its outskirts.

In northern New Brunswick, undeveloped waterfront lots are a popular investment for rural New Brunswickers working out west in the oil patch. More generally, though, the much-loathed “double tax” on second homes (actually a provincial tax on top of municipal property taxes) likely dampens the cottage market province-wide, potentially putting buyers at an advantage.

Madonna 2012 tour dates leaked

Madonna’s next world tour will kick off March 31, 2012 in New Zealand, according to a supposedly leaked internal document from concert promoter Live Nation, reports HitFix.

Fan website DrownedMadonna.com reportedly received the leaked internal memo yesterday (October 12) from an unnamed source at the company. According to the source, an official announcement confirming the tour dates is scheduled for October 31. Even if the document is genuine, dates and cities remain subject to change until that time.

The document lists almost 40 performances, including shows in Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Israel, Italy, Germany, France, the U.K., the U.S. and Canada. There are also shows tentatively scheduled for China, but the singer is apparently still in talks with the Communist country: officials want to approve her set list before giving Madonna approval to perform, and have already nixed Material Girl and Erotica.

If the dates hold firm, Madonna will kick off the North American leg of her tour on July 13 in New Jersey, and wrap up August 10 in Florida. The same source noted that more dates will be added early in 2012, presumably for Latin America.

U2’s first appearance in Atlantic Canada

Legendary Irish rockers U2 will perform at the Magnetic Hill Music Festival in New Brunswick on July 30 with special guests Arcade Fire, according to band’s website. Today (January 31), the City of Moncton and concert promoters confirmed U2 will be visiting Atlantic Canada for the first time ever for the last gig of their 2011 North American tour.

“The Moncton show is set to be the final date of the U2 360° Tour in North America and we’re really looking forward to bringing this now legendary 360 production into Atlantic Canada for the first time,” says U2’s manager Paul McGuinness.

“To say that we’re excited about welcoming U2 to Moncton is an understatement,” added Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc. “Our Magnetic Hill Concert Site has seen some outstanding artists over the past five years, and the 2011 event will be no exception. To host one of the biggest bands, on one of the biggest stages, as part of one of the biggest tours for their final North American date is an honour.”

With a cylindrical video system of interlocking LED panels, and a steel structure rising 150 feet from the floor over a massive stage with rotating bridges, the band has created an intimate 360º experience for concertgoers. Long-time U2 Show Director Willie Williams worked once again with architect Mark Fisher (ZooTV, PopMart) to create an innovative 360º design, to give audiences an unobstructed view of the concert.

Tickets go on sale Tuesday, February 8th at 10am, and already Moncton hotel rooms are beings snapped up in record time.

U2 will also play Montreal on July 8 and 9 at the Hippodrome, and Toronto on July 11 at Rogers Centre.
