The best square 4K monitor is on sale for Black Friday

I’ve been using Huawei’s excellent MateView monitor for the last few months, and it’s incredible. The only thing that holds it back is its price, which is remedied by this deal.

Canada Computers has dropped the price to $698, $200 off its usual $900 price tag.

This monitor is pricey, but it’s well worth it since it has a great 3:2 aspect ratio, rich colours and even an excellent speaker built into the stand. The base also houses a few USB passthrough ports and can provide up to 65 watts of power. That said, this stand isn’t removable, and you can’t mount it on a monitor arm.

However, the extra vertical and horizontal space has benefited all of my work, from gaming to content creation. Not to mention the all-metal design looks tremendous and sufficiently minimal next to a MacBook.

In terms of specs, it’s got a 4K resolution with 10-bit colour and a 60Hz refresh rate.

This flexible PC monitor is business and pleasure

Have you ever wanted a curved display for gaming and then a flat display for work? Well, Corsair has a new device that can do both.

This new monitor is called the Xeneon Flex 45WQHD240 and pricing and availability have yet to be announced, but this new monitor is the coolest display to grace a desktop in years. It’s also using an LG OLED panel, so in terms of colour and contrast, it should look phenomenal.

The interesting thing about this monitor is that you have to pull on handles attached to either side of the display and curve it yourself. You can see it in action in the video below, but be warned that they’re playing with prototypes and Corsair claims that the full production version will be less stiff.

One issue with this monitor is that it’s massive. It has a 45-inch 21:9 aspect ratio, making it almost TV-sized on your desk. As it’s a top-of-the-line product, it’s also pushing 240Hz and has a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.

It’s unclear if this product will realease soon, but since it’s coming from Corsair there’s a chance that it will filter into the Canadian market at some point.

Samsung’s giant, curved Odyssey Ark monitor could arrive in August

Remember that absolutely gargantuan curved monitor Samsung revealed back at CES in January? Apparently, it’s on the way and will go on sale in August.

The news comes from South Korean publication ETNews (via The Verge), which said the Odyssey Ark monitor passed through a few Korean certifications programs, signalling Samsung is prepping it for release.

Of course, there remains a lack of detail about the Ark monitor. We still don’t really know where it’ll be available, how much it will cost, or most of the specs. We do know that it’ll have a 16:9 aspect ratio and 4K resolution. Plus, the monitor will support pivot, tilt, and rotation.

The Ark Odyssey made waves at CES 2022 for being an absolutely massive curved monitor that can tower over users. Measuring in at 55-inches, it’s frankly absurd:

As with most tech shown off at CES, there were doubts the Odyssey Ark would ever become available. Samsung had said it’d arrive in the second half of 2022, and August does fall within that range.

It’s also worth noting that Samsung has released other monitors it showed off at CES. There’s the company’s Mac-like M8 monitor and the Odyssey Neo G8 curved gaming monitor. That Samsung released some of its CES monitors lends some hope that the Ark will also arrive. Whether it’ll show up in August as rumoured, or sometime after, remains to be seen.

Huawei Canada launches MateView GT and MateView in Canada

Huawei Canada has announced the launch of the Huawei MateView series of devices. These include the MateView and MateView GT, which offer cutting-edge display technology.

Alongside the launch of the MateView GT, you can grab a free Wireless Mouse GT and a Wireless Charging Mouse Pad GT from January 5th to January 19th.

In Canada, the Huawei MateView GT costs $748.99 and the other model retails at $898.99 CAD.

I’ve been using the MateView GT for the past couple of weeks (review coming soon) and it’s pretty stellar. The monitor sports a 34-inch 165Hz refresh rate display with a curved 21:9 aspect ratio and a pixel resolution of 3440 x 1440.

There’s also a cool RGB light bar integrated into a Soundbar that changes colours offers a variety of different lighting modes. Speaking of the SoundBar, it sports 2.0 stereo sound for an immersive experience when gaming or watching content.

The GT also sports two HDMI 2.0 display ports, a DisplayPort 1.4 port, USB Type-C charging and a 3.5mm audio jack.

On the other hand, the MateView sports a regular 3:2 ratio with a 28.2-inch display and a 60Hz 3840 x 2560 pixel resolution. It features two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, one DisplayPort and one 3.5mm audio jack.

LG has made the monitor of my dreams

LG has announced a new monitor that’s a vertical rectangle. What a time to be alive.

The South Korean tech giant’s strange creation called the ‘LG DualUp’ is, at least theoretically, like having two 21.5-inch monitors stacked on top of one another, but without the glaring border.

All we know so far is that the DualUp features a 16:18 aspect ratio, a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 2,880 pixels and comes attached to an LG Ergo stand. These are built-in monitor arms that clamp onto your desk and provide effortless movement.

Unfortunately, the monitor can only output a peak brightness of 300 nits, which is a little lower than I’d like to see. That said, it does feature stereo speakers, which helps make it an all-in-one office display solution.

LG is, of course, marketing this monitor to people that work from home and not gamers. However, playing any game that’s not a first-person shooter on a monitor like this would likely be fine. My first PC monitor when I built my rig back in 2016 was a square and playing Stardew Valley on that thing was phenomenal.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think of this old square…

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but since all PC monitors were square when I was growing up, there’s something nostalgic about monitors that aren’t a rectangle.

I like the idea of having an almost square monitor for work since you need more screen real estate to have multiple windows and apps open at once. Or, if you use a pro app like Premiere or AutoCad, it’s nice to be able to have lots of tool sections and boxes open at once. LG says that this monitor size can help reduce neck strain from looking side to side.

I hope more companies follow LG’s lead here and release more monitors that take up vertical space on users’ desks.

The gaming monitor that looks as good as the games it displays

I consider myself a minimalist. I prefer to have as few items in my home as possible. And the same goes for my desk. If I could get away with having just a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, I would. But that’s not possible.

Or is it?

The Huawei MateView GT monitor is about to change the game with its impressive slate of features:

  • 34-inch curved display
  • 3440×1440 ultrawide resolution
  • 165Hz refresh rate
  • 4000:1 contrast ratio
  • Built-in soundbar
  • Microphones with noise-cancelling functionality

The immersion conversion

This is a gaming monitor that offers cinematic-quality visuals and audio in a single piece of hardware.

Anyone who has used an ultrawide display can back me up when I say it provides the most immersive experience for PC gaming. And the Mateview GT’s 21:9 curved display brings you even deeper into the action.

Huawei MateView GT monitor

I’m about to throw out a few numbers, which will mean a lot to monitor enthusiasts, but very little to everyone else. Stick with me. The monitor features a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a 90% DCI-P3 wide colour gamut.

A wide colour gamut and dynamic range mean that you’re getting more contrast between the brightest and darkest points. The VA panel displays deep shadows and bright highlights with ease.

Add the fact that the monitor can display more than 1 billion colours, and you’ve got one of the most striking displays on the market. I wouldn’t recommend adjusting your brightness high enough to warrant this term, but the visuals on the MateView are eye-popping.

You don’t need to conform to perform

What would a gaming monitor be without wicked fast performance?

The MateView GT has a refresh rate of 165Hz. If your PC can handle it, you’ll be running games at 3440×1440 resolution at 165 frames per second. I personally can’t notice the difference above 90, but to describe that performance as buttery smooth would be an understatement.

1440p is currently the sweet spot for high-end gaming. The introduction of ray tracing has led to improvements in lighting, but it has also made games far more demanding. A monitor that can deliver 165Hz performance in an ultrawide resolution is nearly unheard of.

Oh, and don’t forget that it also features AMD Freesync technology to eliminate screen tearing.

Huawei MateView GT monitor

And that’s just where the MateView GT’s innovations begin.

The MateView GT is designed with a built-in soundbar and microphones with noise-cancelling functionality. This all-in-one design is the first of its kind. Monitors that have built-in speakers usually offer the cheapest drivers possible. They’re designed to have external speakers plugged into them. At best, they’ll have small, front-facing speakers that put out tinny sounding audio.

Huawei’s monitor was designed from its inception to provide an engaging auditory experience.

The light of my life

If the dual-driver stereo soundbar isn’t enough to impress, the RGB lighting might be. The multi-colour FX LED light has eight different lighting modes that are intelligently matched to the audio being delivered.

And all of this is beautifully incorporated into the monitor’s stand. I can’t be the only one who appreciates a good monitor stand, right?

Huawei MateView GT stand

The integrated audio design means that you won’t have cables to manage. In fact, the soundbar elegantly hides the base of the monitor stand.

It also hides two microphones for incoming audio. These far-field dual microphones feature intelligent noise cancellation to keep your voice clear at all times. You’ll not only hear the game; you’ll be able to communicate with your team without a distracting mic in your face.

Built for gaming

If it wasn’t clear already, the MateView GT is an excellent gaming monitor. The designers at Huawei have taken the time to understand the needs of players, going so far as to add optional on-screen crosshairs. It’s touches like these that separate a good monitor from a great one. And the MateView GT is a great monitor.

Most people don’t need a monitor that has 4K resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. Honestly, your computer probably can’t handle it. The MateView GT finds the sweet spot at 3440×1440, delivering excellent performance that your PC can actually output.

And I haven’t even mentioned the best part: the price.

The Huawei MateView GT can be bought for $749 at Canadian tech retailers.

If you’re ready to take on your fellow Spartans this holiday season, the MateView GT should be at the top of your list for PC purchases.

Samsung’s new monitor features a pop-up webcam

Working from home and video chatting is the future. Samsung knows it, and now the company has revealed a computer monitor with a webcam elegantly built into the top bezel.

The monitor features a 24-inch 1080p display with a small rectangular pop-up camera tucked behind the screen at the top. While there’s no denying the webcam is pretty awkward when it’s fully extended, the fact that Samsung tucked it into the screen when it’s not in use makes it a lot more appealing to me.

Plus, the monitor includes built-in speakers and a USB hub. While you’d think this would help clean up the cable management situation, its awkward placement behind the display seems a bit weird to me. The port selection is a little outdated (see below), but versatile enough that it should work for most people. Still, a USB-C input would have been a forward-thinking touch.

The monitor features one D-sub port, one DisplayPort 1.2, two USB-A 3.0 jacks, an HDMI 1.4 port and a headphone jack.

Overall, this isn’t the most stunning monitor out there for creatives, but it could be a very versatile option for someone who just wants a side screen for working from home.

The real star of the show is, of course, the two-megapixel full-HD webcam. It’s rated to support Windows Hello face unlocking and features a mic so it can work without a headset.

It’s worth noting that the camera also doesn’t pop up automatically like how the OnePlus 7 Pro’s front-facing shooter works. Instead, you need to push on it and pop it up, similar to ejecting an SD card from a camera.

Samsung’s website doesn’t currently list how much this monitor costs or its availability.
