Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s final DLC character is Kingdom Hearts’ Sora

Nintendo has unveiled the final downloadable fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

was revealed during an ongoing ‘Mr. Sakurai Presents’ stream hosted by Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai.

The reveal event for the final DLC character was first teased during the September Nintendo Direct, leading speculation to run particularly rampant in the weeks since. Sora had been trending for days since that first tease, and Sakurai confirmed that he was one of the most requested characters from the ballot for the fourth Smash Bros. on the Wii U and 3DS.

In terms of gameplay, Sora sports moves from several of the Kingdom Hearts‘ games, including his classic three-hit Keyblade combos, as well as special moves like Sonic Blade for horizontal and vertical thrusts and magic spells like Firaga and Thundaga.

His stage, meanwhile, is Hollow Bastion, which featured Beauty and the Beast characters in the original games but doesn’t here (presumably due to licensing with Disney). Sora also has alternate outfits based on his looks from Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts IIKingdom Hearts III and more. Meanwhile, he’ll come with 9 songs, including “Night of Fate,” “Hand in Hand” and “Destati.”

And, of course, here’s Kirby’s look when he absorbs Sora:

Sora will release on October 18th alongside three Mii Fighter outfits: Doom‘s Doom Slayer, Judd the Cat and Splatoon‘s Octoling.

Sora rounds out Ultimate‘s Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which costs $37.79 CAD and includes Min-Min (Arms), Steve (Minecraft), Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII), Pyra and Mythra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2) and Kazuya (Tekken). Meanwhile, the first Fighters Pass is priced at $31.49 and includes Joker (Persona 5), Hero (Dragon Quest), Banjo-Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie), Terry (King of Fighters) and Byleth (Fire Emblem: Three Houses). A 12th DLC fighter, Mario‘s Piranha Plant, is sold separately for $7.55.

Since launching in December 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has gone onto become the best-selling fighting game of all time and of the Switch’s flagship titles. Therefore, Sora marks the end of a quite the era.

How to watch the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter reveal

After nearly three years, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to receive one last downloadable fighter.

The identity of this character will be revealed today at 7am PT/10am ET in a “Mr. Sakurai Presents” stream on Nintendo’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

Altogether, the presentation will run for about 40 minutes and feature Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai as he details the fighter’s moveset and release date, as well as the last wave of Mii Fighter costumes. On Twitter, Sakurai teased that Smash Bros. players and general gaming fans alike should tune in.

With Ultimate‘s extensive representation of both first-party Nintendo properties and third-party franchises, the game has been viewed as a “celebration of gaming” by many. It’s also the best-selling fighting game of all time with over 20 million copies sold. Given all of that, it’s quite possible that Sakurai or Nintendo will have some sort of special video or other surprise beyond the final character and Mii Fighter outfits to formally send off the game.

As for who the final character might be, it’s completely unknown at this point. Some of the most commonly requested characters include Kingdom Hearts‘ Sora, Halo‘s Master Chief, Crash Bandicoot‘s Crash and Nintendo’s own Waluigi, among other options.

Who are you hoping to see as the final character? Let us know in the comments.

Unraveling the saga of the 4K Switch Nintendo says doesn’t exist

When Nintendo first revealed the Switch OLED model a few months ago, it was difficult not to be disappointed that it wasn’t the more significant rumoured refresh many people expected.

Since then, rumours surrounding a potential 4K Switch died down — at least until now. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that several developers currently have Switch 4K development kits and are actively working on games with them.

The publication’s report says that 11 developers are working with the 4K Switch development kit, including both big and small studios. As expected, Nintendo quickly denied this claim, stating that it has “no plans for any new model other than Nintendo Switch — OLED Model..”

Bloomberg says that Nintendo planned to release a 4K Switch this October but was forced to shift its plans due to “component shortages” related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Japanese gaming giant already sent out 4K development kits to developers prior to revealing the Switch OLED model.

Developers working on 4K titles state that they expect to release their games at some point in 2022, indicating that we likely won’t see the release of a 4K Switch until that time frame “at the earliest.”

Adding more fuel to the churning rumour mill, mobile game developer Zynga denied that it currently has a 4K development kit from Nintendo. Bloomberg‘s report states that the FarmVille developer is one of the studios that currently has a 4K Switch development kit. Zynga is working on Star Wars: Hunters for the Nintendo Switch.

Earlier rumours indicated that Nintendo plans to utilize Nvidia’s DLSS technology to output 4K visuals when the console is docked.

Though it would make sense to assume Bloomberg‘s reporting is wrong, it’s likely not the case. If a rumour appears this often, there’s usually at least some level of truth to it.

This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo deny a console’s existence, only to reveal it a few months later. Further, it’s not surprising to see a developer reportedly working on a 4K Switch title denying it has a development kit given how secretive the gaming industry typically is.

Nintendo’s Switch OLED model will release on October 8th for $449 CAD.

Nintendo Switch getting a six-button Sega Genesis controller, but only in Japan

Last week, Nintendo made the surprise announcement that Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games are coming to Switch Online as part of a new paid ‘Expansion Pack’ tier. Nintendo will also sell $64.99 N64 and Genesis controllers to use with these games.

Now, the company has revealed a special version of the Genesis controller that has six buttons instead of the usual three. However, it will only be offered in Japan, a Nintendo of America spokesperson confirmed to Polygon.

The spokesperson didn’t provide a specific reason for this exclusivity outside of a general “different regions make different decisions based on a variety of factors” statement. That said, the spokesperson did note that the three-button configuration was “by far the more widely used and well-known SEGA Genesis controller in these regions.”

Switch Online

As Polygon explains, this was certainly true. The six-button controller didn’t release until several years after the launch of the Genesis. It was introduced then in response to the increasing popularity of input-heavy arcade games like Street Fighter and Streets of Rage.

It’s important to note that while Nintendo Switch accessories are technically region-free, the company says it “cannot ensure compatibility between systems and accessories for all regions.” Therefore, you might want to keep that in mind if you’re thinking of importing the six-button gamepad or any other Japan-exclusive peripherals.

For now, though, the three-button controller and Switch Online Expansion Pack are set to launch sometime in October. Nintendo says specific pricing and release timing will be revealed at a later date.

Triangle Strategy, an upcoming strategy-RPG from Square Enix, is coming to the Nintendo Switch on March 4th, 2022.

Revealed during a previous Nintendo Direct as Project Triangle Strategy, the game is a spiritual successor of sorts to Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics series that uses Octopath Traveler‘s stunning aesthetic.

“In response to the survey about the demo released in February of this year, the game has been fine-tuned with a focus on elements that received lots of feedback,” said Square Enix during the Direct. “These include adjustments to the difficulty, improvements to on-screen visuals, camera angle controls, the ability to review previous dialogue, and streamlined game flow and loading times.”

Here’s how to connect your Nintendo Switch ‘Pokemon Unite’ account to mobile

Though Pokémon Unite is now available on Android and iOS, it’s been playable on the Nintendo Switch for a couple of months now.

If you’re like me, you’ve already played this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) on your mobile device, but now you’re thinking about taking the experience to your smartphone.

Unlike several other games, Pokémon Unite allows you to crossplay between Android, iOS and the Nintendo Switch, and even further, you’re also able to link your accounts.

Here’s how to do it:

When you first log onto the mobile version of Pokémon Unite, the game will ask you for your language preference and then your birthday.

After that, Pokémon Unite asks you to connect your Google account, Facebook, Pokémon Trainer Club, Nintendo Account, or create a new account.

For me, I used the Nintendo Account and entered my username and password.

Following that, the game kicked me out, which I’m not sure will happen for everyone. However, when I logged back in, I had full access to my Pokémon, items and clothing.

It’s a pretty straightforward process for anyone looking to combine accounts.

The new update also includes a battle pass that features a space theme, with the top reward being a new ‘Galatic Ghost 094’ skin for Gengar.
