Northwestel launches high-speed fibre internet in two NWT fly-in communities

Northwestel customers in two fly-in communities in the Northwest Territories can now access unlimited high-speed fibre internet.

In a press release, the company says the communities of Fort Good Hope and Tulita, located in the Mackenzie Valley region, will see speeds up to 300Mbps. Previously, speeds hovered at 15Mbps.

The areas are connected with the same fibre optic technology seen in larger cities around the country. They are the first northern fly-in groups with seasonal winter-road access to be completely connected to fibre.

“Our engineers and technicians are so grateful for the local support we’ve received in working through the unique challenges of bringing fibre right into homes in Tulita and Fort Good Hope,” Tammy April, Northwestel’s vice-president of customer experience, said.

The upgrades are part of the company’s Every Community Project, aimed at bringing unlimited high-speed internet to 10,000 homes in Northwest Territories and Yukon.

Customers can also access live HD TV through Northwestel TV Plus, with prices starting at $25/ month.

More information on the new services is available at www.nwtel.ca.

Life Below Zero and Life Below Zero: Canada stars get candid about living off-grid

Cottage Life is now in free preview nationwide. The new season of Life Below Zero: Canada premieres on March 22 at 9 p.m. ET. Life Below Zero, Series 2 with Sue Aikens airs throughout March from Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. ET. To get in on the adventures, find your channel and tune in!

Following the world broadcast premiere of Life Below Zero: Canada on Cottage Life in 2020, Becky Broderick quickly became the standout star, drawing comparisons to the hugely popular Sue Aikens from Life Below Zero. The 32-year-old mother of one from Prelude Lake, Northwest Territories, lives with her husband, Dene, their daughter, Thi, 3, and a team of 11 sled dogs. Becky had watched Life Below Zero with Sue Aikens before she was cast for the Canadian adaptation of the series.

Ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Life Below Zero: Canada, Becky, and Sue sat down for a remote conversation to meet each other for the very first time on camera. Watch the three-part interview where the two discuss a wide array of topics including why they enjoy being alone and the moments where they’ve feared for their lives. Becky also responds to the public backlash she received for raising her daughter in the north and reveals a sweet surprise. Plus: a meet-up between the two stars could also be in the works.

Life Below Zero: Canada follows the drama and hardships of a diverse group of characters in different corners of Northern Canada as they battle wildlife and weather during a long, dark, freezing winter. The new season reunites Cottage Life audiences with Becky Broderick (aka the “Sue Aikens of Canada”), Bentley Kakekayash, Kim Pasche, and Pierre-Yves Duc from Season 1 and introduces newcomer, Jonathan Grenier.

Cottage real estate region: Ingraham Trail

Extending 70 km east of Yellowknife, the Ingraham Trail runs alongside rivers, waterfalls, and a network of lakes. It literally is the end of the road for locals and the start of the temporary winter route made reality-TV famous by Ice Road Truckers. But it’s not diamond mines that draw cottagers (and year-rounders) here: it’s the scenery of granite hills, the canoe routes, and the Jack pine forests.

Popular cabin lakes include Prelude, with its many islands, and the expansive Prosperous Lake. Cottages here are all off-grid, from a few that are one-room cabins with woodstoves to fully-equipped houses with solar power, propane heat, and diesel generators. What else do they have in common? They’re hard to come by. Unresolved land claims have halted land development along the Ingraham Trail, so what has already been built on federally leased land is in short supply. Tip: get a realtor who will alert you when something comes on the market, or cozy up to a local for a private sale.
