Renders of Project Cambria surface, revealing what Meta’s new headset may look like

Meta announced its codenamed Project Cambria headset last year and brand new renders finally give us a glimpse of what it may look like. The company has been fairly quiet on what Project Cambria will bring to the table. Though, the renders may give us a taste of its design elements.

These renders were put together by the notable tipster and content creator Brad Lynch. In a tweet, Lynch states that the unofficial renders have been compiled using information from the supply chain. Lynch also claims sources who’ve tried Meta’s Project Cambria say that the renders represent the final PVT model.

Based on the leaked renders, Project Cambria has a more minimalist design aesthetic we compare it to Oculus Quest 2. It’s certainly not reinventing the wheel and keeps many of the same design philosophies from Meta’s tentpole virtual reality (VR) headset. Though, it does look more lightweight. The strap that runs over the user’s head on the Oculus Quest 2 is no longer. Additionally, if Project Cambria maintains its darker colour, that may speak to those not too fond of the matte white of Oculus Quest 2.

Beyond basic design aspects, there’s still a lot to speculate about when it comes to Project Cambria. While we do see a forward-facing camera for mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR), specs are a mystery. It’s safe to assume that Meta’s Project Cambria will be more powerful than Oculus Quest 2. Though, how the company will achieve that is still anyone’s guess.

While it’s always worth taking unofficial renders with a grain of salt, Lynch is fairly confident in them. In a follow-up tweet, he states that he’s “250%” certain these renders are accurate.

Meta’s focus on the metaverse will require hardware to help support it. That’s where headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 and Project Cambria come in. Although Meta has been a prime supporter of VR technologies, it still lacks in providing tools to support AR and thus MR. Project Cambria may fill that void.

Currently, there’s no firm launch day for Project Cambria from Meta. Though, the company continues to eye a 2022 release.

Meta launches new patch for Oculus Quest 2 with Cloud Backup and more

Facebook Meta has launched a new patch for the Oculus Quest 2 that adds several new features to the standalone virtual reality headset, including Messenger calls in virtual reality, a mixed reality camera and Cloud backup.

Cloud backup gives users a way to save data in the cloud, including game saves and headset settings. This will come in handy if you ever need to reset your Oculus Quest. The feature is available within the ‘Device’ tab in the settings menu. Developers can opt not to use Cloud Backup, but it will be optional by default.

There’s also a new mobile mixed reality camera feature that enables users to see, record and share videos of themselves in a VR game or app. This feature is a step above ‘version 29’s’ ‘Live Overlay’ functionality, which superimposes you in the real-world over footage from your headset’s point of view. Instead, this new feature pulls the camera back so you can see yourself actually in the game.

The new mixed reality overlay is available on the iPhone XS or newer running iOS 11 or higher. Meta says it will be available in various apps, including Pistol Whip, Superhot VR, Synth Riders and more.

There are several other more minor updates included in the patch. Meta is also opening up Oculus Quest beat testing to more users.

You can buy an Oculus Quest 2 from Amazon or Best Buy and get a $70 digital credit.

The promotion is applicable to both the new 128GB variant introduced in August and the 256GB storage version.

The 128GB Quest 2 is currently listed for $399.99 at Amazon and Best Buy. With the new promotion, you get a $70 digital discount, essentially bringing the price down to $329.99. Similarly, the 256GB headset is listed for $549.99, but with the promotion applied, you spend $479.99.

Purchase the Oculus Quest 2 from Amazon before November 29th with promo code ‘OCULUS70,’ and you’ll receive an email with your digital discount.

Purchase the Oculus Quest 2 from Best Buy and you’ll receive an email with a $70 Best Buy eGift card. If you decide to purchase the Quest 2 in-store, you’ll get a physical $70 eGift card on the spot.

It’s worth noting that last December, a small number of Oculus Quest 2 users experienced skin irritation due to the VR headset’s foam cushion gasket, prompting Facebook to halt the headset’s sale. Further, the company issued a voluntary joint recall with Health Canada and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to replace the facial foam gasket. The VR headset has since been redesigned to solve this issue and rereleased.

PS2 Classic GTA: San Andreas is coming to VR with the Oculus Quest 2

During its Connect 2021 event, Facebook Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is coming to the Oculus Quest 2.

It’s unclear when the game will release, how much it will cost or even really what the PlayStation 2 classic will look like running in virtual reality (VR). During the event, only a brief snippet of the game in action was shown off. Oculus’ website lists GTA: San Andreas for the Quest 2 as a “project many years in the making.”

Remasters of GTA: San Andreas, Vice City and San Andreas are set to release on November 11th across Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as mobile devices.

As fun as it would be to check out Grove Street in VR, I’m not sure a title like San Andreas could be played from the first-person perspective. That said, GTA V on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 featured a first-person mode, so maybe bringing San Andreas to VR isn’t that far-fetched.

Resident Evil 4 was recently ported to the Oculus Quest. While I haven’t tested out the game myself, it has received pretty positive reviews so far.

During its Connect 2021 event, Facebook also revealed that it’s changing its name to ‘Meta.’

New Oculus Quest 2 promotion knocks $150 off if you buy two headsets

After introducing a new 128GB variant for the Oculus Quest 2 at no additional cost in August, the Facebook-owned company is back with another promotion.

Now, you can buy an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset and get a second one for $150 off. Oculus is offering this deal on both the 128 and 256GB storage variants until September 27th.

The 128GB Quest 2 costs $459. Two of them would set you back $918 on a regular day, but you pay only $768 for the two under the promotion.

Similarly, the 256GB storage Quest 2 costs $629, and two of them would total $1,258, but instead, you pay only $1,108 if you place your order before September 27th.

Facebook sold nearly 4 million Oculus Quest 2 headsets in the United States and about 172,600 in Canada, with 5,716 and 758 reports of skin reactions to the Quest 2’s internal gasket in each nation, respectively. Now, the company offers a new and improved facial foam interface with the headset, further making the promotion a solid (and safe) deal.
