OnePlus could be working on a giant tablet

OnePlus has steered clear of the tablet market for the past ten years or so, but it looks like the company may finally fall for the forbidden fruit.

According to a forum post on OnePlus’s website, the rumours started when OnePlus trademarked OnePlus Pad in Europe and India in 2021. Since then, it’s been silent, but a new leak from Max Jambor has shed light on the potential project.

The tweet suggests that OnePlus might release the tablet in 2023, which would be interesting since Google also has strong tablet ambitions for next year.

Other leaks suggest the tablet will run Android 12L and that it will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and 6GB of RAM. Beyond that, the large 12.4-inch screen will be an OLED panel. It’s expected to offer 45-watt fast charging and feature a battery size of around 10,000mAh.

Looking at these rumours from a Canadian perspective, I’m not expecting the tablet to launch here. OnePlus usually keeps its more interesting devices, like the OnePlus TV to markets where it’s more popular. I’d expect this tablet to be released in the same way.

That said, the OnePlus Watch did make its way to North America, so the tablet could follow suit, especially as the software/hardware ecosystem game heats up leading into the 2020s.

OnePlus confirms Snapdragon chipset in upcoming flagship

OnePlus posted to its Chinese Weibo account that its next flagship will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

This isn’t surprising since each new OnePlus flagship phone always features most recent Qualcomm chipset. The post also mentions that OnePlus will be the first to use the chip, which seems strange since OnePlus phones usually follow in the footsteps of Oppo. However, it’s starting to shape up like the next OnePlus flagship will release in China before the end of 2022.

For context, the company basically did the same thing with the OnePlus 10 Pro last year, which it released on January 4th in China, and then came to North America in the spring.

Rumours about the phone suggest it will drop the “Pro” sub-title and will be called the OnePlus 11, which could be a refreshing change of pace if the company can stick to a cohesive product strategy for more than a year at a time.

The OnePlus 11 is expected to feature a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide shooter. The 2x telephoto is also being bumped up to 32 megapixels which is an exciting count for a mobile camera. The company needs to work on its telephoto, so if this is true, it will be a welcome change.

Other leaked specs include 16GB of RAM, a 6.7-inch display and 100-watt fast charging. OnePlus also clarified around the launch of the 10T that the new flagship would continue with Hasselblad camera tech and the much-loved alert slider. The only issue is that if this phone drops the ‘Pro’ moniker, it might not be the next flagship to get those features.

That all being said, the phone doesn’t seem to be stacking up to have insane amounts of potential. However, OnePlus is offering great discounts on its 2022 models for Black Friday, so keep your eyes on its site if you want a OnePlus flagship at a discount.

OxygenOS 13 begins rolling out to OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

The OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro are finally receiving the advancements of OxygenOS 13. A couple of months after the software hit the flagship OnePlus 10 series, a stable version of OxygenOS 13 is rolling out to more users.

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro users should expect to see Android 13 and its improvements rolling out to their devices. Released earlier this year in August, OxygenOS 13 has been incrementally adopted by many companies. Alongside Google and Samsung, OnePlus has been integrating the software since it left its beta stage.

For OnePlus 9 series users, OxygenOS 13 works to improve the somewhat underwhelming Android 12 software. This iteration of the software brings a slew of stability solutions, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. Additionally, it introduces a new notification centre that is largely inspired by Google’s ‘Material You’. Multitasking is also made easier thanks to its new ‘Smart Sidebar.’

OxygenOS 13 does have some hiccups and a few minor bugs. However, MobileSyrup’s Brad Bennet spent hands-on time with the beta and full release. Overall, it seems as though the full version offers more positives than drawbacks. For OnePlus 9 series users, this should be a welcome arrival.

Earlier this year, OnePlus made the decision to develop OxygenOS and its ColorOS independently. This news came after the two pieces of software were being tied together. The company chose to separate the two in order to allow faster updates moving forward.

The OxygenOS 13 update itself comes in as a sizeable 5.02GB install. Keep that in mind if you are looking to update your OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro. The update is incrementally rolling out to various regions around the world. Users in Canada and the U.S. should have the update available now.

OnePlus might be dropping the ‘Pro’ moniker for OnePlus 11

Since the release of the OnePlus 7 Pro in 2019, OnePlus has followed the ‘Pro’ naming convention for its higher-end flagship device. Some of the devices would later be followed with a ‘T-edition’ devices.

Now, it seems that OnePlus is ready to drop the ‘Pro’ model altogether (at least during launch) and release only a OnePlus 11.

The information comes via tech leaker Max Jambor on Twitter, and was shared by Android Police. Trusted industry leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer doubled down on the leak.

It is currently unclear whether OnePlus has completely dropped the ‘Pro’ branding, or if it has been pushed to a later exclusive release. Additionally, in reply to a Twitter user who asked if there would be no more Pro devices, Jambor said, “Not for Q1 2023 at least. The device we are going to see is pro-speced but they just skip the Pro name this time.”

From what we know so far, the OnePlus 11 Pro will reportedly feature a different design than its predecessor, including a revamped camera housing wrapped around its edges with a quadruple cutout for the cameras. Further, the phone is expected to launch sometime in early 2023 and sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

OnePlus rolls out stable OxygenOS 13 update

After launching the beta for OxygenOS 13 in August, the company is finally rolling out the official build.

This update has received criticisms for being a carbon copy of Oppo ColorOS, but it does bring some notable improvements to the OnePlus system. That said, anyone hoping OnePlus will return to its stock Android days should probably move on. Oppo released its Android 13 OS update to its flagship X5 Pro a week ago, suggesting these two operating systems will be tied together moving forward.

The update is rolling out to people who were part of the beta and will then filter down to other OnePlus 10 Pro owners in the coming weeks, according to OnePlus. There’s no word on when this will come to other OnePlus devices from the last few years.

What’s new

The biggest change includes the new ‘Aquamorphic’ design that looks significantly cleaner than OxygenOS 12 and 11. The new notification centre is well-spaced and offers more consistent iconography, plus you now have more control over matching the colours to your wallpaper with a ‘Material You’ influenced customization.

There’s even a new big folder option that’s quite cool but does bug out if you have your home screen orientation to anything other than 4×6 apps.

I’ve been using the beta since it came out, and while it has been a bit buggy, the full version does seem to solve some of the localization issues I noticed originally. You can read my first hands-on with the new software here.

You can find the full changelog and download files on OnePlus’ blog. The company also has an FAQ to go over some of the new features and changes in more detail.

OnePlus 11 Pro renders showcase new camera design

OnePlus 11 Pro renders have been shared online, showing off some changes for the Chinese flagship.

The images were shared online by Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka @OnLeaks, and published by SmartPrix. The OnePlus 11 Pro will reportedly have a changed design over its predecessor that includes a different camera housing that wraps around its edges.

The renders also indicate the phone will sport four familiar cutouts for its circular camera layout.

Further, it’s said the phone will launch in early 2023 and sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and launch in 2023. Another rumour suggests that OnePlus will launch another phone at the end of this year when Qualcomm releases the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but everything is up in the air.

The OnePlus 11 Pro will launch with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest and also sport Android 13 and an upgraded ColorOS.

OnePlus confirms Canadian 5G support for the 10T

The OnePlus 10T is the newest phone from OnePlus and the handset now officially works on four networks in Canada.

Bell and Telus subscribers can use the phone on 5G and LTE, while Rogers and Freedom only support 4G LTE on the new phone.

Official carrier support rarely comes to OnePlus phones in Canada. However, the company threw an enhanced antenna design and modem in the 10T, giving it almost flagship-tier carrier support.

The 10T goes on sale for pre-order on September 1st in two storage variants: 8/128GB for $849 and 16/256GB for $999. For the first week of pre-orders, the company will be selling the 16GB ram model for the same price as the 8GB model and will include a free 80-watt  car charger.

Open sales will begin on September 29th. You can read our full review of the phone here.

OnePlus 10T gets ripped apart in new durability test

The OnePlus 10T is the latest smartphone from the Oppo-owned phone maker.

JerryRigEverything has posted his durability tests for the handset showing that the phone can be ripped apart with a bend test. It only took seconds for the device to bend, which appeared to be due to a structural weak point below the camera module. While regular consumers don’t typically bend their smartphones, most handsets can withstand this type of stress test.

JerryRigEverything describes this as moderately light pressure. The bend breaks the camera module and then more of a bend breaks the glass even more. Eventually, he has the device in pieces.  It’s worth noting that this is something that happened with the OnePlus 10 Pro as well.

Display-wise, the phone scratches as level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, with deep grooves at level 7. The flame test left a mark on the FHD OLED display.

For those skeptical about this type of testing, it’s worth noting that the S22 Ultra, Pixel 6 Pro, Nothing Phone 1 and other phones fare a lot better than OnePlus’ newest device.

OnePlus updates 10T ahead of launch with various improvements

While the OnePlus 10T won’t go on sale for another few days in Canada, the company is already rolling out some fixes for the software.

OnePlus says that this will add system stability improvements, increase startup speeds and stabilize network connections even more. Beyond that, the company’s changelog says it’s fixing a weird camera bug, but in my experience, the 10T has been pretty stable.

Notably, this is just a minor bug fix update, and the phone won’t get the new Android 13-based OxygenOS 13 that’s now out in beta for the OnePlus 10 Pro. If you do want to see what the new software will look like, you can read more about it here.
