Opera browser adds AI tools, like prompts to shorten or explain text

Last month, Opera added OpenAI’s ChatGPT to the sidebar in its self-titled browser. Now the company is back with new AI additions to further complement the browsing experience with AI.

Opera detailed the new AI additions in a blog post. First up are ‘Smart AI Prompts,’ which give users quick access to helpful AI tools. Prompts include the ability to shorten text, whether it’s a paragraph, article, or even a whole website. Moreover, Prompts let you ask AI to tell you the main point of the page or help you craft a tweet.

Users will be able to access AI Prompts from a button in the address bar of the Opera and Opera GX browsers. It also looks like the Prompts will pop up when users select text in Opera. Clicking the Prompts will open the corresponding AI chat tool in the Opera sidebar to respond.

Speaking of which, Opera now has another AI chatbot in the sidebar alongside OpenAI’s ChatGPT: ChatSonic. Billed as a ChatGPT alternative with additional capabilities, ChatSonic can handle some of the AI Prompts and even create images for users.

Opera warns that users will need to create or log into accounts with the respective AI tools to actually use them in the browser.

Moreover, Opera says it’s not stopping there with AI integrations. The company claims it’s working on the second stage of its Browser AI program and even its own GPT-based browser AI engine.

To get access to the new Smart AI Prompts and ChatSonic in Opera, you’ll need to update your browser or download the latest version from Opera’s website.

Opera follows Microsoft, integrates ChatGPT into its browser

Opera is the latest web browser to join the AI wars by integrating ChatGPT.

Announced in a blog post last week, Opera detailed its plans to make AI features available in the browser. First, the browser’s sidebar — which currently gives users access to online platforms like TikTok, Telegram and WhatsApp — will now give access to ChatGPT too.

Along with the sidebar feature, Opera highlighted a feature that leverages ChatGPT to summarize web content.

In the blog post, Opera said it plans to test a ‘Shorten’ button in the address bar. Clicking the button opens the ChatGPT sidebar and prompts it to generate a summary of the webpage.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Opera ChatGPT integration stacks up to Microsoft’s Edge and Bing features. After spending some hands-on time with Bing Chat — the name of Microsoft’s ChatGPT-based conversational AI — I noted that having access to up-to-date information was a major strength that helped Bing Chat feel more useful than ChatGPT.

Moreover, given the ongoing trend of adding AI features into browsers, I suspect we’ll see something come to Google Chrome in the future, assuming Google can get it together after the messy Bard reveal.

Sultanate of Oman opens debuts opera house

In just a few shorts weeks, the Sultanate of Oman – on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula – will make history as it open the doors of its first-ever opera house, reports Routard.com.

Known to attract up-market tourists to its castles, deserts and coastal terrains, Oman intends for the new Royal Opera House to represent its status as a modern nation. Located in the capital city of Muscat – the heart of the Sultanate’s economic and political center – the facility was built in collaboration with international architects, designers and builders to incorporate Arab and Islamic elements.

The rapidly-developing Arab state – bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest – was recently listed as the most-improved nation over the last 40 years by the United Nations Development Programme in November 2010.

The Royal Opera House will open October 14 with its performance of composer Giacomo Puccini’s final masterpiece, Turandot. An itinerary featuring various operatic productions and ballets will be presented in the weeks and months to follow.

Salzburg celebrates 91 years of summer fun

Salzburg, the capital city of Austria’s western state of Salzburg – and birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – revels in the warm weather by hosting the annual Salzburg Summer Festival. 2011 marks its 91st consecutive year of celebrations.

Running five weeks starting in late July, The Salzburg Summer Festival stages a total of 213 musical presentations, including operas, concerts and dramas.

This year’s event also boasts five concerts performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra – and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Orchestra will give musical presentations and concerts of their own.

While the opening festivities on Wednesday were light in mood, Austrian President Heinz Fischer’s shared a somber but stoic sentiment in his speech to festival-goers, remarking that all European countries should unite to jointly face the challenges posed by the economic crisis and the threat of terrorism.

German Protestant theologian, journalist and politician Joachim Gauck also spoke at the ceremony and condemned recent terrorist attacks. He also added that art should play a role in encouraging people to overcome difficulties.

Tickets providing access for all the events of the summer festival cost $535.

Damon Albarn writes and sings opera

A true jack-of-all-trades in much the same way as singer and multi-instrumentalist Jack White, singer Damon Albarn, frontman of Britpop band Blur, co-creator of virtual band Gorillaz, and the album The Good, the Bad & the Queen, will present an entirely new creation at the upcoming Manchester International Festival, an opera called Doctor Dee.

The opera will debut with an eight-show run during the festival June 30 to July 17, 2011. Four years ago, Albarn co-created the opera Monkey: Journey to the West with Jamie Hewlett, where it debuted at the festival to much critical acclaim.

Doctor Dee is reportedly about John Dee, the medical and scientific advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. The BBC reports that the opera mixes history with intrigue, due to Dee’s reputation as an "alchemist, astrologer, and spy".

Albarn will take center stage as the title character, however full cast details have yet to be confirmed.

After its premiere at the festival in July, the production is slated to move to London for staging at the English National Opera as part of the city’s Cultural Olympiad.
