Russell Crowe flirting with Natalie Imbruglia

Russell Crowe spent the Oscars weekend "flirting" with Natalie Imbruglia.

The ‘Les Miserables’ actor and the Australian actress were both in Los Angeles to celebrate the Academy Awards and onlookers say they "were all over one another" as they enjoyed an evening at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

One said: "They were all over one another and doing little to hide their flirting. They were being really playful and jokey with one another. You could see they really hit it off."

They then went back to Russell’s suite with a group of friends where they stayed up until the early hours singing songs around his piano.

The onlooker added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "They then went back to Russell’s room with some friends where they were partying until broad daylight.

"They were singing really loudly together around the piano, belting out some show tunes, and they looked pretty cosy when everyone left them to it."

The morning after Sunday night’s (02.25.13) Oscars, Russell – who split from wife Danielle Spencer last year – said on Twitter he was feeling the effects of a particularly wild night.

Ahead of his appearance on Jay Leno’s show, the father-of-two wrote: "Due to a hangover of massive proportions…anything I say on Leno to night needs to be taken with a pinch of salt…and a slice of lime."

Sources close to Natalie and Russell – who were first linked to each other last month – insisted the pair were "just friends".

Joaquin Phoenix blasts Oscars

Joaquin Phoenix thinks the Oscars are the "stupidest thing in the world."

The ‘Walk the Line’ actor doesn’t agree with the annual Academy Awards – despite having been nominated twice – because he doesn’t feel its fair to compare one acting role against another.

He told Interview magazine: "I think it’s bull***t. I think it’s total, utter bull***t, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it.

"It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other. It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world."

The 37-year-old star’s two nods were Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Gladiator’, and Best Actor, for ‘Walk the Line’ – in which he portrayed singer Johnny Cash – but he says the recognition he got for the latter unnerved him.

He added: "It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when ‘Walk the Line’ was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again. I don’t know how to explain it – and it’s not like I’m in this place where I think I’m just above it – but I just don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things."

Despite his protestations, Joaquin’s next role, in Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘The Master’, has already been highly acclaimed and could see him score another Oscar nomination.

Seth MacFarlane will host the 2013 Oscars.

The ‘Family Guy’ creator has been chosen to present the 85th Academy Awards and bring his fresh brand of comedy to the prestigious ceremony on February 24 next year.

Seth released a statement saying: "It’s truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don’t find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen roast."

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron commented: "We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars. His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh.

"He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him."

The funnyman recently suffered a mishap while presenting an award to the Reality Show Host Emmy Award winner when he spoke into a switched-off microphone.

Seth joked: "This is what happens when you don’t come to rehearsal. That’s gonna be on YouTube."

The comedian follows in the footsteps of illustrious Academy Award hosts including Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg.

Sacha Baron Cohen spills Kim Jong-Il ‘ashes’ over Ryan Seacrest

Sacha Baron Cohen has spilled the "ashes" of Kim Jong-Il over Ryan Seacrest on the Oscars red carpet.

The 40-year-old ‘Borat’ star arrived at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles dressed as General Aladeen – his character from forthcoming movie ‘The Dictator’ – and came equipped with a golden urn bearing the face of the late North Korean leader.

Asked about his outfit by E! News presenter Ryan, he said he was wearing a creation by John Galliano – the former Christian Dior designer who was dismissed after an anti-semitic rant.

Sacha – who was almost banned from the ceremony because of his clothing plans – added: "The socks are from K-Mart … Saddam Hussein once said to me, socks are socks, don’t waste money!"

Talking in character, he said he was excited about attending the prestigious awards at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre because: "It gave me an opportunity to bring my dear friend and doubles tennis partner Kim Jong-Il.

"It was his dream to come to the Oscars, and to be sprinkled over the red carpet and over Halle Berry’s chest again."

He then pretended to loose his grip on the urn and spilled the contents over Ryan’s Burberry tuxedo before being pulled away by security guards and telling the interviewer: "If somebody asks you what you’re wearing, you say Kim Jong-Il."

But Ryan insists he expected something to happen in the interview, and even brought a spare jacket just in case.

He told E! News: "Let me walk you through how this all came together. I had heard that the Dictator wanted to come and wanted to do an interview and wanted to do it in character. Very deliberate, all of this.

"In the back of my mind, I thought, ‘OK, there’s no way a conversation with him in character is going to go as planned’. As we were talking, I could just feel that something was about to happen, and sure enough it did. But I had two jackets. I was red-carpet ready!"

This is not the first stunt Sacha has pulled – he landed on Eminem bottom-first at the MTV Movie Awards in 2009 dressed as the titular character of his film ‘Bruno’.

Sacha Baron Cohen banned from Oscars?

Sacha Baron Cohen might be banned from walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards on Sunday (26.02.12).

The British comedian is believed to have planned to attend the glittering ceremony as General Aladeen – his character from forthcoming movie ‘The Dictator’ – but studio bosses frown on stunts in front of the world’s media and are considering reversing his invite, which he gained for his part in Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’.

The Academy is believed to have got in touch with Sacha’s representatives to confirm whether or not he is planning to do the stunt, according to The Wrap.

Sacha has a history of using his characters to create controversy – his alter-ego Bruno from the movie of the same name became well known for antics including storming the stage during a fashion show and landing on Eminem in a white jock strap during the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.

In 2000 his first major character Ali G offered British MP Neil Hamilton a cigarette allegedly containing cannabis, which he accepted and smoked.

‘The Dictator’ – which also stars Megan Fox and Anna Faris – is due for release in May.

Monsieur Lazhar to represent Canada at the Oscars

The race was tight this year with Monsieur Lazhar by Philippe Falardeau, Café de Flore by Jean-Marc Vallée, and Ken Scott’s Starbuck all favorites to represent Canada at the Oscars.

Yesterday, it was announced that Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar has been selected to represent the country, reports the Globe and Mail, and when asked about his reaction upon hearing the good news, Falardeau said, “It made me feel very happy but dizzy at the same time because it’s a long road.”

“People have to understand it’s long process. I am not nominated at the Oscars. I am Canada’s entry at the Oscars. But it’s nice to see that people recognize the quality of the film and it’s also a nice window for the launch of the film later on in Quebec.”

Adapted from a play by Evelyne de la Chenelière, Monsieur Lazhar tells the story of an Algerian immigrant who gets a teaching job and must help his students deal with the death of his predecessor, who committed suicide.

The film has already won major prizes at Switzerland’s Locarno International Film Festival in August, and at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.

The five finalists for the best foreign language film will be announced on January 24, and the ceremony takes place February 26, 2012.

Eddie Murphy to host Oscars?

Comedian-actor-singer Eddie Murphy is the first choice to host the 84th edition of the Academy Awards gala, reports Deadline.

Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand), who is producing the gala awards show next year, has just finished working with the Beverly Hills Cop star on the comedic thriller Tower Heist with Ben Stiller.

Murphy, 50, was nominated for best supporting actor in 2007 for his role as James ‘Thunder’ Everly in Dreamgirls, and won a Golden Globe for his performance.

Although many of his contemporaries have hosted the Oscars – Whoopi Goldberg, Billy Crystal, and Steve Martin – the Saturday Night Live comedian has yet to host.

“Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie. Not Brett. Not even Quentin Tarantino,” according to an insider. “Eddie can quote scenes from every single movie word for word.”

“He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has ‘Saturday Night Live’ experience before a live crowd….” Billy Crystal is said to have shown interest as well, however nothing has been confirmed yet.

Last year, James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the ceremony to lackluster reviews. The next Academy Awards will be held February 26.

Murphy’s latest film Tower Heist with Ben Stiller and Casey Affleck will be released in theaters on November 4. Also due out January 13, is the dramedy A Thousand Words, starring Murphy and Juno’s Allison Janney.

Oscar eludes Denis Villeneuve

Unfortunately, French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve did not collect the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film last night (February 27). The Danish film In a Better World beat out Incendies.

During the gala hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, The King’s Speech won four awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Director for Tom Hooper, and Best Original Screenplay for David Seidler.

It wasn’t a huge surprise when Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her performance in Black Swan. Christian Bale and Melissa Leo both won an Oscar for their supporting roles in The Fighter.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception did not leave empty-handed, winning awards for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.

The Social Network picked up five Oscars: Aaron Sorkin won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Best Original Score, and Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter for Best Film Editing.

The Oscar for Best Animated Film was awarded to Toy Story 3.
