Shakira: Motherhood is ‘deliciously overwhelming’

Shakira finds motherhood "deliciously overwhelming".

The 36-year-old singer and her Barcelona soccer player boyfriend Gerard Pique welcomed their first child, son Milan Pique Mebarak, into the world in January, and the musician is so smitten with her baby she can’t stand being apart from him.

Earlier this month Shakira decided to bring Milan with her while filming ‘The Voice’, where she snapped a photo of them sat on the big red chair and shared it with her followers on Twitter.

Speaking about the adorable photo on the ‘Today’ show, Shakira gushed: "Being a mother is deliciously overwhelming. It’s surreal. It’s a whole new experience to me, and I’m just discovering it second by second.

"And having him here, it’s great, it’s a new thing, it’s another part of me and my loved one. He’s accompanying me so I don’t feel alone."

Shakira joined her fellow ‘Voice’ judges – Usher, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton – on the chat show and discussed the antics on set.

While she enjoys the "hard work" put into the wannabe singers, the ‘Gypsy’ hitmaker admitted she feels "guilty" when she dropping acts from the Battle Rounds after putting so much time and effort into helping them progress.

She added: "You have the opportunity to watch the results of all the hard work and to see how much progress your artists have made, or not made. But at the same time you have to let one of them go and it’s sad. Sometimes, the guilt is overwhelming."

New moms and dads shouldn’t try to be ‘perfect parent’

With the arrival of a newborn baby, many parents try to do everything perfectly, and it’s this attitude more than anything else that may actually add to their new-parent stress, according to a new U.S. study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

Ohio University researchers studied 182 couples who became parents between 2008 and 2010, and found that mothers have less confidence in their parenting skills and fathers experience more stress if they worried about what other people thought of their parenting skills.

Conversely, self-oriented perfectionism, measured with statements like “I must always be a successful parent,” was actually linked to higher levels of parenting satisfaction for both mothers and fathers.

Fathers were more likely than mothers to benefit from the self-imposed perfectionism, according to the researchers, and they hypothesize these fathers were highly involved in parenting, or that fathers still don’t carry the same burden for childcare that mothers do in our society.

The study is among the first to explore the quest for perfection among new parents, and is part of a larger study called the New Parents Project. Researchers noted that the study examined parents just three months after their child was born, so it’s likely that the role of perfectionism would change over time.

Greater age difference benefits older siblings

Allowing for at least two years of age difference between siblings can help boost the older child’s intelligence, according to a new study published in the Journal of Human Resources.

Researchers at the University of Notre Dame looked at data from about 3,000 women who had given birth to 5,000 pairs of siblings. Using math and reading tests, the researchers found that older siblings scored higher for each year that spaced them from a sibling. When it came to the younger child, age difference didn’t seem to have any effect.

This is due to the elder sibling benefitting from more parental attention before the younger child comes along, the researchers hypothesize. Older children with a sibling closer to them in age spend more time watching television between the ages of three and five, and are read to less often than those who enjoy two or more years of undivided attention.

Emotional stability, criminal record two main influences on getting custody

At the annual meeting of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, researchers presented some interesting facts about divorce and custody, reports Pediatric News.

U.S. researchers reviewed 183 cases from family court and coded all possible variables that might affect custody outcome, including custody prior to clinic evaluation, race, income, education level, and mental health treatment.

Researchers found that mothers were four to five times more likely to receive sole custody when the father has a history of arrests, while the fathers were ten times more likely to be granted custody if the mother had been involved with family services.

Main factors against the mother receiving sole custody were history of psychiatric hospitalizations, family services involvement, annual income below $20,000, and history of substance abuse.

As for the father, factors counting against custody included arrest history, lower education level, having a child treated for mental health issues.

“These results suggest that emotional stability appears to be more relevant for mothers and a criminal record more relevant for fathers in both pre-evaluation custody arrangements and court clinic recommendations," researchers concluded.

Many parents refusing to vaccinate children

Many parents deliberately don’t vaccinate their children according to a recent U.S. study, reports Health Day News. Many California parents are choosing to bypass the requirement that their children be fully immunized before attending school by signing an affidavit that says "all or some immunizations are contrary to my beliefs.”

At some schools, 1 in 5 kindergarten students remains unvaccinated, putting these kids and their schoolmates at risk of preventable infectious diseases. These are the schools where authorities are concerned that ‘herd immunity’ has been compromised. ‘Herd immunity’ is the protection offered to unimmunized people when most everyone else has been immunized or is otherwise unsusceptible.

This news follows a recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finding that with more unvaccinated kids, the U.S. is now experiencing its largest measles outbreak in 15 years. Experts have also blamed a recent resurgence in cases of whooping cough (pertussis), especially in California, on declining child vaccination rates.

Parents are choosing not to vaccinate for many reasons, but many hesitate because they fear the risk associated with vaccines is greater than the risks associated with the preventable diseases. Many also believe the now-discredited notion that the shot might raise autism risk.

Conflicting views of a child’s behavior helpful to clinician

Clinicians often face the challenge of trying to make sense of conflicting reports from parents, teachers, and children about a child’s behavioral problems.

However, a better understanding of the source and nature of these disagreements may provide important information that could improve treatment and outcomes.

A group of articles in the current issue of Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology explores this challenging clinical dilemma and how clinicians should proceed in the face of these conflicting reports.

Editors note that “disagreement between informants was more the rule than the exception.” They suggest that clinicians view this disagreement as “additional information” rather than a problem and use this information to help determine the credibility of each informant’s report.

“This has implications for treatment engagement, adherence, and ultimately outcomes,” they conclude.

"Clinicians have long known that parents and children have very different perceptions about how a child is behaving or what they are feeling…These studies improve the diagnosis and advance our understanding and treatment of children with psychiatric disorders," said Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, Editor-in-Chief.

Education program helps reduce frequency of shaken baby syndrome

Twenty U.S. hospitals implemented a maternity care program to teach parents about the dangers of shaking infants, and how to cope safely with an infant’s crying, according to a study recently published in the journal Pediatrics. The study evaluated the effectiveness of the program in helping to reduce the frequency of shaking injuries.

Shaken baby syndrome is a form of child abuse that is diagnosed from a triad of symptoms: subdural hematoma, retinal hemorrhage, and brain swelling. In a majority of cases there is no visible sign of external trauma.

The educational program, which was delivered by maternity nurses, included a leaflet explaining abusive head trauma (“shaken baby syndrome”) and how to prevent it, an 8-minute video on the subject, and a statement signed by parents acknowledging receipt of the information and agreeing to share it with others who will care for the infant.

Researchers compared the frequency of shaking injuries in the three years after program implementation with the frequency during a five-year historical control period. They found a 75 percent decrease from 2.8 injuries per year (14 cases in 5 years) to 0.7 injuries per year (2 cases in 3 years).

The study concluded that parent education delivered in the hospital by maternity nurses greatly reduced newborns’ risks of an abusive head injury resulting from shaking.

Is Halloween too dangerous?

A recent survey has found that one in five people would support a ban on the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating, and as many as 50 percent felt that parental accompaniment should be mandatory, reports the Daily Mail.

After the British riots over the summer, people have become afraid of their neighbor’s children, with 22 percent of respondents supporting a ban on Halloween this year in the U.K.

Almost half of the respondents – 43 percent – voted to ban on masks or anything else that obscured the face, including hoodies, and about 38 percent said they would support a curfew for young people this year.

Although Halloween is a celebration for kids, some parents would prefer to forget all about it. Vandalism is commonplace during the evening, and according to a British insurance survey, one in eight adults have had eggs thrown at their home, and six percent have had ornaments, plants or fencing damaged.
