You can use MagSafe on a Pixel 6 with the right case

Accessory maker Moment has launched a new slate of cases for the Pixel 6 series of phones that allows them to work with Apple MagSafe accessories.

The company is labelling the cases with (M)Force branding, and not only do they allow for basic accessories like the MagSafe Wallet to be attached to the back of the phone, but they even work with the MagSafe Wireless charger. You can see this below, as demonstrated by David Imel from the MKBHD Studio on Twitter.

So far, the company is only selling one magnetic accessory compatible case for each of the new Pixel phones in black. However, Moment does sell its iPhone 13 cases in more colours, so perhaps the company may add some colours to these if they’re popular enough. I also used a Moment case on my iPhone 12 and liked how the rubbery plastic felt to touch.

Overall, it’s a really smart move for case makers and even other phone manufacturers to usurp the MagSafe accessories. When Apple announced them, it seemed like another way to lock people into the iPhone ecosystem. Now that the Pixel can use the same accessories with a case, it breaks down that barrier and, potentially, means that all phones could use MagSafe with the right case.

This is excellent news for me since I’m obsessed with my PopWallet+ with MagSafe. The Moment cases cost $49.99 USD (roughly $61 CAD).

Google launches new case style for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Google is introducing a new type of case designed for its recently revealed Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones.

The Pixel 6 series’ cases are dual-layered and feature raised edges to guard the device. They’re also made of shock-absorbing materials that wrap around each corner of the Pixel 6 series.

Google says it made the cases transparent so that you can still see the Pixel 6/6 Pro, while creating a new colour with the contrasting hue.

With my ‘Stormy Black’ Pixel 6 Pro and ‘Soft Sage’ case, this combination makes an odd grey colour I’m not the biggest fan of. However, the right combination of colour and case could probably still look great.

Both the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro cases cost $39.

Google only promises three years of Android updates for Pixel 6/6 Pro

Thanks to a Google support page, we now know that the company’s fancy new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will only get three years of Android OS upgrades (i.e. Android 12) just like previous Pixel phones.

It’s a real bummer to hear given that Google’s been talking up how the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will get five years of security updates, a more impressive promise that comes much closer to Apple’s frankly ludicrous level of support (2015’s iPhone 6S got iOS 15 this year, marking six years of software support).

Android Police spotted the Google support page, which says that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will get “Guaranteed” Android version updates “until at least” October 2024. Google also guarantees security updates until October 2026 on the same page.

There is a glimmer of hope here — Google says “at least.” That could mean the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro will get updates beyond that timeframe, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

What makes this particularly frustrating is that thanks to the new Tensor chip in the Pixel 6 line, Google has much more control over the Pixel hardware stack. PCMag’s lead analyst Sascha Segan tweeted that Google has previously had issues with the lack of drivers and support from chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek for newer Android versions on older phones — something that Google implied it wanted to fix with Tensor.

While I don’t want to detract from the positive of five years of security updates, I also want to make it clear that three years of OS upgrades is simply not enough. Google has put itself in a position to do better — now, it actually should.

Google’s 512GB Pixel 6 Pro isn’t available in Canada

Google’s recently revealed Pixel 6 Pro isn’t available in the 512GB variant in Canada.

In the U.S., the Pixel 6 Pro is sold in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options, but north of the U.S. border, we’re stuck with 128GB and 256GB variants.

It’s unclear why Google didn’t opt to release the 512GB version of the Pixel 6 Pro here, but it likely has something to do with the ongoing chip shortage or that the Canadian market is much smaller than the United States’.

In the U.S., the 512GB model starts at $1,099 USD, which comes to roughly $1,359 CAD.

On the other hand, the Pixel 6 is available in 128GB and 256GB variants both in the U.S. and Canada. If you’ve been trying to buy the sought-after new smartphones through the Google Store, it’s likely the experience hasn’t been entirely smooth. Some would-be Pixel 6 buyers have reported error messages and sometimes inaccurate out-of-stock messages in the store.

The Pixel 6 starts at $799 and the 6 Pro starts at $1,179. Both smartphones will release in Canada on October 28th.

More Pixel 6 leaks show off renders, Google ad with ‘Magic Eraser’ and more

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro leaks have been relatively scarce compared to previous Google phones, but as the search giant’s October 19th event approaches, the leaks have increased substantially.

First, leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) posted a lengthy thread of high-res images and renders of both phones on Twitter. The images include renders of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in all three colours, renders of some cases for the phones and lifestyle shots with people holding the phones. We haven’t seen some of the pictures before, but if you’ve been following the Pixel 6 series closely since Google’s semi-reveal earlier this year, there shouldn’t be any surprises in this leak.

Next up, leaker ‘Snoopy’ (@_snoopytech_) posted a Pixel 6 series ad on Twitter (via 9to5Google). The roughly 30-second ad focuses on the new Tensor chip and shows off several features powered by it. Those with a keen eye will spot some of the new Android 12 clock and weather widgets, what appears to be a redesigned ‘Now Playing’ widget and a ‘Magic Eraser’ feature.

This isn’t the first time Magic Eraser has leaked, but seeing it in an official-looking Google Pixel ad effectively confirms the feature’s existence. For a bit of context, Google showed off a similar feature all the way back at its I/O developer conference in 2017. The feature never materialized, and the company confirmed in 2018 that it wasn’t coming soon.

In the ad, Magic Eraser appears as a suggestion chip in Google Photos — the user taps the chip, and it highlights a person in the background of a selfie and then removes that person from the image.

Further, the leaked ad shows off ‘Live Translate’ in a conversation between two people, in Google’s Messages app and in pictures, although the latter appears to be existing Google Lens functionality. The impressive part comes after, where the ad claims that there’s “no internet required” for the feature.

Finally, the ad shows off the new ‘Security Hub,’ which Google bills as a helpful way to protect your “digital life.”

All in all, the ad makes the Pixel 6 series look rather impressive. We’ll likely learn more about all these features on October 19th and real-life tests from reviewers soon after will show how well the features actually work.

Qualcomm tweets shade at Google’s upcoming Pixel 6

I don’t really understand this red flag meme, but it reportedly means something is a deal-breaker or is a warning sign for dating.

Now, it seems like the tech world has caught wind of the trend, with Qualcomm’s official Snapdragon Twitter account throwing a bit of shade at Google.

Next week Google will unveil its Pixel 6 series that features its own Tensor chip. While this tweet from Qualcomm is definitely aimed at the Mountain View, California tech giant, to be fair, Google isn’t the only Android manufacturer creating its own chip.

For example, Samsung devices feature its own Exynos chipset in Europe. That said, in North America, Samsung’s smartphones utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips.

Google officially reveal the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on October 19th.

Here are the Pixel 6 and Galaxy Flex Note leaks from this past week

Images, renders and videos of upcoming smartphones continuously leak. These leaks can be challenging to follow, so we compiled a list of the past week’s hottest rumours.

From October 4th to October 10th, we saw a couple of leaks about the Pixel 6, and more.

Below are all the major smartphone leaks from October 4th to October 10th:

Google

Rumours first shared by AI (@AppleLE257) on Twitter indicate that Google’s fall Pixel 6 series event will also include the reveal of the often-rumoured Pixel Watch, Pixel Fold, and several new Nest smart speakers.

For more on the Pixel event leak, click here.

The new Pixel devices will reportedly support 23W wireless charging.

Evan Blass, who obtained several Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro marketing images — including a handful that show off the new Google Pixel Stand — uploaded the renders to Twitter. The photos show the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on a new Pixel Stand, implying that both devices will support Qi wireless charging.

Samsung

The patent, which outlines a smartphone called the ‘Galaxy Flex Note,’ showcases a foldable device with a wrap-around display and a stylus dock.

Graphic designer Technizo Concept created a 3D product rendering based on the patent in collaboration with LetsGoDigital.

According to the report, the Flex Note offers an expansive screen size when unfolded. However, there’s no separate front display like with Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Z Fold 3. Instead, the phone sports a wrap-round screen that runs across the smartphone’s body.

Huawei

Huawei recently patented a new foldable smartphone with the codename ‘Mate V,’ and now it seems like the handset is getting its own stylus called the V-Pencil, according to LetsGoDigital.

The stylus was patented at the European Union Intellectual Property Office with the description “electronic pen, computer stylus, touchscreen stylus.” This patent goes hand in hand with the Mate V device spotted on Weibo and first reported by @Panda.

Leaked Pixel 6 Pro teardown videos show off the smartphone’s insides

Even though Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro haven’t yet officially been revealed, we know nearly everything about the pair of upcoming smartphones.

Taking things a step further, two videos posted to YouTube today go so far as to show off what the Pixel 6 Pro looks like inside, how to take it apart and how to put it back together.

The images, which likely were never intended to be released publically and seem to be related to manufacturing at a warehouse, don’t include voiceovers and feature low-quality text, graphics and music (those are some sick royalty-free guitar riffs though). Still, they give an unpreceded look at the inside of Google’s upcoming flagship smartphone well before iFixit inevitably tears it to pieces in a few weeks.

The videos also reveal a few facts about the smartphones that Google hasn’t confirmed yet, including that there are mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G versions of the device. We’ll likely get the sub-6GHz version of the Pixel 6 Pro in Canada given mmWave 5G isn’t available here. The videos also reveal that the Pixel 6 Pro features an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip connector.

So far, we know Google will include a custom ‘Tensor’ processor in the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro and that each phone will come in three colour options.

Further, the Pixel 6 Pro will feature three cameras, including a telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom. On the other hand, the Pixel 6 will only include two cameras and no telephoto lens.

Google will reveal the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro during an October 19th event.

Google Pixel 6 Fall Launch scheduled for October 19th

After months of leaks and rumours about Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 lineup and the Mountain View, California-based company going all out with its marketing, Google has just announced its Pixel Fall Event set to take place on October 19th at 1pm ET/10am PT.

Google is expected to fully detail the new devices during the event and show what its in-house Tensor chips are capable of.

“On October 19th, we’re officially introducing you to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro—the completely reimagined Google phones. Powered by Google Tensor, Google’s first custom mobile chip, they’re fast, smart and secure. And they adapt to you,” reads Google’s invite to the event. The event will be broadcasted live on the Pixel Event website and its YouTube channel with ASL interpretation.

While the Pixel 6 lineup will be officially unveiled at the October 19th event, we still aren’t sure when the devices will be available for the public to pre-order or purchase.

From what we know so far, the Pixel 6 Pro is expected to have a curved screen, similar to the S21 Ultra and Samsung’s ISOCELL GN1 50-megapixel sensor. The ultra-wide camera will use a 12-megapixel IMX386 sensor, while the 4x optical telephoto camera on the 6 Pro will use a 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor.

The phone will reportedly support up to 20x zoom with photos and videos (except 4K, where zoom is capped at 7x) and 4K/60fps video recording. However, we still don’t know how the new cameras will perform when paired with Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) models.

Further, the new Pixel devices will reportedly be capable of 33W wired charging. For reference, Google’s Pixel smartphones currently only support cable charging up to 18W.

If you can’t tune in live on October 19th, make sure to follow along with MobileSyrup. We’ll have the latest news and updates from Google on our homepage as well as on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Google Japan shows off Pixel 6 Pro in new video ad

I looks like Google Japan is very excited about the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

The 30-second video below doesn’t reveal much about the Pixel 6 Pro, but it confirms the phone’s ‘Material You’ user interface, and it’s clearly the 6 Pro featured in the ad.

Additionally, there’s a two-second reminder that the phone utilizes Google’s Tensor chip, the company’s proprietary processor.

The messaging in the video’s description read that the phone is “Coming Soon,” so we’re, unfortunately, still waiting on an official reveal and release date.

That said, we do know that Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are scheduled to launch this fall.
