Here’s what to expect for Google I/O 2023: Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a, AI and more

Google is holding its annual I/O developer conference on May 10th, where the company is rumoured to show off several new devices and updates coming to the company’s line of smartphones, apps, AI and more.

Hardware

Pixel Fold

Google is expected to unveil its long-rumoured Pixel Fold, the company’s upcoming flagship foldable smartphone. Previous rumours from Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech indicate that the smartphone will cost $1,799 USD (approximately $2,436.45 CAD) for the 256GB model and $1,919 USD (approximately $2,598.97 CAD) for the 512GB model. The handset is expected to come in two colours, ‘Chalk’ and ‘Obsidian,’ with a 512GB model only available in Obsidian.

The device is also rumoured to be paired with 12GB of RAM, a Tensor G2 and the Titan M2 security chip.

The outer display of the Pixel Fold is set to feature a 17.4:9 aspect ratio at 5.8 inches and will sport an FHD+ OLED display with a 2,092 x 1,080-pixel resolution. The inner screen reportedly sits at 7.6 inches, with the foldable display featuring ultra-thin glass protected by plastic.

Further, the handset will reportedly feature a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.7 aperture. The outer selfie camera is reported to include a 9.5-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. The battery size remains unknown, but rumours indicate it’ll be smaller than the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s cell.

Additionally, according to Prosser, the handset will launch on May 10th, and pre-orders from the Google Store open the same day. Pre-orders from partners/carriers won’t open until May 30th, and the phone doesn’t launch until June 27th.

The Pixel Fold was recently shown off in a quick clip (see above). However, the video doesn’t really give us a detailed look at the device, unfortunately.

For that, we’ll have to turn to previously revealed renders. Renders of the device were shown by Howtoisolve and OnLeaks back in December. You can take a look at the renders below.

Pixel Tablet

The Pixel Tablet will reportedly launch with 8GB of RAM and four colour options. These colour variants include one with a green rear case with a black bezel (‘Hazel’) and the other with a white bezel with a beige/cream rear (‘Porcelain’). The other two colours remain unknown.

The tablet will also reportedly feature an aluminum body with a nano-ceramic finish designed to provide a soft matte look and textured feel. Additionally, rumours indicate it includes a Tensor G2 processor, runs Android and comes in two storage options. Reportedly, these variants come in 128GB and 256GB options, with European pricing rumoured by Quandt.

According to his leak, the cost will be around €600 (roughly $880 CAD) to €650 (roughly $960 CAD). 9to5Google reported similar information based on details from sources “familiar with the matter.”

A leaked Amazon listing showed the tablet’s dock retailing at $120, but considering this information didn’t come from Google, it’s difficult to know if this is the actual cost of the dock.

The tablet will ship with a Charging Speaker Dock and charges via the rear pogo pins, with power coming from a jack on the rear. Further, this means that Google will likely not include a USB-C charging brick in the box. The Pixel Tablet was most recently spotted at the Milan Design Week as part of Google’s own ‘Shaped by Water’ exhibit.

Google initially unveiled the Pixel Tablet back at its 2022 Pixel 7/7 Pro launch.

Pixel 7a

Arguably the least exciting part of the hardware section is the mid-range Pixel 7a.

This handset is rumoured to feature 128GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, a 6.1-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, Google’s Tensor G2 chip and 5W wireless charging. The A-series will also offer two 12-megapixel shooters as well. Other rumours point to the device featuring a 64-megapixel primary sensor and 256GB of storage.

The handset will reportedly experience a price jump of $50. If Google maintains that price difference for the U.S. and Canadian Pixel 7a, we could see a $649 CAD price tag. Further, the smartphone is expected to launch in a new stylish blue variant, alongside grey and white versions.

And finally, the Pixel 7a is rumoured to feature a face unlock.

Software

Android 14

As for software, Google’s Android 14 is already available in a public beta for those interested in downloading the OS update on a Pixel device.

We’ll also learn more about the Android update in the future, and Google is likely holding back some more significant updates for I/O. Further, we can expect a new version of the beta soon after the I/O, and we’ll also learn what other manufacturers will allow users to download the beta.

AI

AI has been a big thing of late with the rise of ChatGPT and, subsequently, Google’s Bard platform. We’ll likely learn more about Bard and its language model, and specifically how the company plans to bring it to devices.

Other

Google will also likely share updates about Google Maps, Google Photos, Google Search and other apps in its suite. The tech giant will also likely talk about security and how it plans to keep those apps safe.

Here are the Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet and iPhone 15 Pro leaks from this week

With I/O around the corner, Google’s Pixel slate of upcoming devices has leaked extensively over the past week.

Below is a collection of all of this week’s reports and rumours surrounding the smartphone and tablet world.

Google

Let’s start with the biggest news first. The Pixel Fold’s potential specs have surfaced online. The leak indicates that the Fold will sport 12GB of RAM, a Tensor G2 chip with the Titan M2 security chip. As for dimensions, the handset will allegedly feature an outer 5.8-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 2092 x 1080 pixel resolution. The inner, foldable display sits at 7.6 inches with ultra-thin glass protected by plastic.

The leak also suggests the handset features a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, as well as a selfie camera with a 9.5-megapixel sensor.

You can learn more about the leak here.

Another leak detailed the potential launch and availability dates of the Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a and Pixel Tablet. Leaker Jon Prosser says the Fold will be announced on May 10th, and pre-orders open from Google the same day. However, the rumour suggests the Fold won’t have carrier pre-orders until May 30th and will launch on June 27th. The leaker indicates the handset will cost $1,799 USD (about $2,411.72 CAD).

The Pixel 7a will also come in ‘Charcoal,’ ‘Snow,’ and ‘Sea (light blue),’ and the Google Store will have an exclusive ‘Coral’ variant. The handset will be available to purchase on May 10th. The Pixel Tablet will launch with Tensor G2, Android 13, with 8GB of RAM. It will also sport two storage configurations.

You can learn more about the leak here.

While not part of this leak, another rumour suggested that the Pixel Tablet will come in 256GB and 128GB storage variants. This leak indicated that the tablet will cost around €600 (aproximately $880 CAD) to €650 (roughly $960 CAD).

You can learn more about the leak here.

The Pixel 7a is expected to arrive at retail stores within the next 14 days, according to another recent leak. However, there are no signs of the Pixel Fold (which corroborates the earlier leak of a June launch).

You can learn more about the leak here.

The Pixel Fold will reportedly have the “most durable hinge on a foldable.” CNBC also reports that Google will announce the Fold at I/O 2023 on May 10th. The publication goes on to detail the specifications of the Pixel Fold. The foldable has water resistance, a 5.8-inch external screen and will open like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch display like the Z Fold 4. The Pixel Fold will also weigh about 10oz (about 283.5g) and will have a larger battery than the Z Fold 4, which Google says will last 24 hours.

You can learn more about the leak here.

The Pixel 7a might see a $50 price increase over the Pixel 6a in the U.S., though it’s unclear how much the Pixel 7a will cost in Canada.

You can learn more about the leak here.

Apple

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will reportedly feature frosted glass similar to the Pro models, according to a Weibo user. The frosted glass would make the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus look more similar to the Pro models.

You can learn more about the leak here.

The iPhone 15 Pro is to continue with the Action button, according to a leak from this past week.

The leaker indicates that the iPhone 15 Pro’s Action button is going ahead as planned, despite other rumours.

Alongside all these details, the leaker indicates the Action button will be force-sensitive, similar to 3D touch, so it can understand if you’re tapping it, pressing it lightly or hard.

Alleged Pixel Fold shown off in short clip

Much like the years, the leaks start comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ — a video of an alleged Pixel Fold has now emerged, capping off a week’s worth of wild leaks.

Reliable leaker Kuba Wojciechowski shared a short clip on what is supposedly the Pixel Fold. The clip shows the phone’s internal, foldable display, but the content is blurred out. Then the person holding the phone closes it, briefly showing the external front display, before opening the phone again.

Unfortunately, that’s the extent of what we see in the clip and there’s not much to visually identify the device as the Pixel Fold. The clip could just as easily show some prototype foldable from Samsung. But Wojciechowski says it’s the Fold and he told The Verge that the only information he can say on the record is that the clip he posted is over a month old.

That said, the device in Wojciechowski’s clip closely resembles many of the Pixel Fold renders we’ve seen over the last few days and weeks. Plus, after watching the clip more times than I’d like to admit, I think I can see the edge of the rear camera bump.

Is that a camera bar I see?

We’ve recently learned a ton about the Pixel Fold ahead of its rumoured reveal at Google’s I/O conference next month. Rumour has it Google plans to launch the Pixel Fold at I/O on May 10th and open pre-orders that day, with availability in late June. The Pixel Fold’s potential specs leaked and a report based on internal Google communications revealed the company thinks the Pixel Fold has the “most durable hinge on a foldable.”

New Pixel Fold leak uncovers the foldable phone’s potential specs

A new leak from Jon Prosser of Front Page Tech about the upcoming Pixel Fold offers a detailed look at the foldable’s potential specs.

According to Prosser, the Pixel Fold will cost $1,799 USD (approximately $2436.45 CAD) for the 256GB model and $1,919 USD (approximately $2598.97 CAD) for the 512GB model. The fold is said to come in two colours, chalk and obsidian, with the 512GB model available in obsidian only.

Google is also reportedly offering a free Pixel Watch for everyone who pre-orders the Pixel Fold, making the steep price point more justified.

According to the leak, both foldable models will feature 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and run the Tensor G2 chip with the Titan M2 security chip. As for dimensions, the phone allegedly measures 5.5 by 3.1 by 0.5-inches when folded.

The outer display of the Pixel Fold is set to feature a 17.4:9 aspect ratio at 5.8-inches and will sport an FHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2092 × 1080 pixel resolution OLED screen. The inner display sits at 7.6-inches, with the foldable display featuring ultra-thin glass protected by plastic.

Like the Pixel 7 series, the upcoming Pixel Fold will come with Google One VPN, according to this report.

The recent leak also touches on the specs of the phone’s cameras. Prosser reports a 48-megapixel main sensor with /1.7 aperture and a sensor size of half an inch. The front outer selfie camera is reported to have a 9.5-megapixel sensor with 1.22 pm pixel width, f/2.2 aperture, and fixed focus.

Pre-orders for the Pixel Fold open on May 10th, with the foldable phone expected to get a full introduction at the Google I/O 2023. The foldable is expected to release in June 2023.

Pixel Fold reportedly has ‘most durable hinge on a foldable’

With Google I/O around the corner, Pixel leaks are coming from all over. The latest comes from CNBC, of all places, confirming previous leaks about the Pixel Fold’s launch and price. The publication also reports the Pixel Fold will have the “most durable hinge on a foldable.”

CNBC cites internal communications it viewed as the source of the information. Per the communications, CNBC reports that Google will announce the Fold at I/O 2023 on May 10th. Moreover, the Fold will cost “upwards” of $1,700 USD, putting it in competition with Samsung’s $1,799 USD Galaxy Z Fold 4. (In Canada, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $2,269.99).

The publication goes on to detail some of the specifications of the Pixel Fold. The foldable reportedly has water resistance, a 5.8-inch external screen and will open like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch display, same as the Z Fold 4. The Pixel Fold will weigh 10oz (about 283.5g) and will have a larger battery than the Z Fold 4 that Google says will last 24 hours.

The Pixel Fold reportedly runs on Google’s Tensor G2 chip like the company’s 2022 flagships.

Another interesting tidbit in the CNBC report is that Google plans to offer incentives to draw people to the Pixel Fold. This will include trade-in options to swap from a current Pixel, iPhone, or other Android phone and get a discount on the Fold. Even more alluring is that Google will reportedly offer a free Pixel Watch to Fold buyers. Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that Google often has different (and better) trade-in offers in the U.S.

Here are the Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 series and 7a leaks from this week

Over the past week, we learned a lot of information about several upcoming smartphones, including the Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 series and the Pixel 7a.

Below is a collection of all of this week’s reports and rumours surrounding the smartphone and tablet world:

Google

This past week we’ve seen a leak about the Pixel 7a’s various colour variants. Now, the handset has been spotted in white, grey and blue.

The leak also indicates that the smartphone sports a 64-megapixel primary shooter and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera sensor, 256GB of internal storage, up to 8GB of RAM and more.

You can learn more about the leak here.

Another leak indicates that the Pixel Fold will feature a better display than the Z Fold 5. Despite Samsung making both screens, the Z Fold 5 will use the same material panel as the Z Fold 4, while the Pixel Fold will feature newer material.

This leak also indicates that the iPhone 15 models will also use the same material as the Z Fold 5.

You can learn more about the leak here.

The Pixel 8 will reportedly have a smaller display compared to the Pixel 7. According to a report from DSCC, the Pixel 8 will offer a 6.16-inch display, down from the Pixel 7’s 6.32-inch screen. The Pixel 8 Pro, however, will feature the same 6.7-inch screen.

You can learn more about the leak here.

It looks like the Pixel Tablet might include a privacy switch of some sort.

In this leak, you can see the front and back of the Pixel Tablet, including a switch on the top left above the volume control.

You can learn more about it here.

Samsung

It looks like we’re getting close to the reveal of a Samsung foldable tablet, according to a new leak. The leak suggests Samsung’s Galaxy Z Tab could launch alongside the Tab S9.

You can learn more about the leak here.

Apple

It looks like Apple might launch a new iPhone SE. The handset will release in 2025 and include a 5G modem and the same ancient, but familiar, home button.

Google’s Pixel Fold might have a better display than the Z Fold 5

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 might feature a worse display than the Pixel Fold.

According to The Elec, it looks like the Z Fold 5 will sport Samsung Display’s M12 material set (the material used to create OLED panels) for OLED displays, similar to what was available on the Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4 and the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Now, Samsung is working on the M13 and M14 material sets, but Google will get the first taste of the new technology.

The Pixel Fold will reportedly use the M13 material sets, compared to the Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5, which will use only the M12 material sets, similar to their predecessors. It would be strange for Google to opt for the M13 sets, as the company isn’t usually ahead of the game regarding components. And it’d be odd for Samsung to use the M12 sets if it knows Google’s displays are ahead of its own devices.

The Elec also indicates that Apple’s iPhone 15 models will use M12-based displays. This is an upgrade for base iPhone users as the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus used the M11 sets; however, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max already use the M12-based displays.

The rumours also suggest Samsung Display is building a custom set dubbed ‘M14’ solely for Apple and its 16th-gen devices. However, in 2023 Samsung will reportedly build four displays for the iPhone 15 models with assistance from LG display for the two Pro models.

The Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are expected to launch in August, the iPhone 15 models in September, and the Pixel Fold could release sometime this Spring.

Google’s Pixel Fold could land on store shelves sooner than expected

According to a bunch of new information about the Google Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a scrounged from retail sources, the devices could arrive after Google I/O in mid-June.

The information comes from WinFuture and 9to5Google (via Android Police). The two publications reported on leaked retail listings for the phones that include information about colourways, storage options and, importantly, the launch window.

For the Pixel Fold, it will reportedly land on store shelves in mid-June. That’s a surprising departure from previous leaks that pegged the foldable for a fall launch alongside the Pixel 8 series (speaking of which, renders of the 8 Pro surfaced online, check ’em out here).

However, it makes sense when you think about it. The Pixel Fold will reportedly rock the Tensor G2, so it might seem odd launching alongside the Pixel 8 with its Tensor G3 chip. Plus, launching the foldable in the summer means it won’t overshadow Google’s fall flagships.

Beyond the June release, the retail listing revealed there will be a 256GB Pixel Fold, though it’s unclear if there will be other storage options. The Fold will also have cases in ‘Haze Midtone,’ ‘Porcelain’ and ‘Sky’ colours.

As for the Pixel 7a — which also just had a massive leak — it will also be available in mid-June. However, it’s less surprising than the Fold since Google typically launches the A-series Pixel in the summer following a reveal at I/O.

The Pixel 7a will reportedly have three colour options, ‘Carbon,’ ‘Cotton’ and ‘Artic Blue.’ The first two are your typical run-of-the-mill black and white options, while Artic Blue sounds more interesting.

WinFuture reportedly saw a Jade-coloured case for the Pixel 7a, though it’s unclear if there will be a matching Jade-coloured phone. The Pixel 7a will reportedly offer one storage option at 128GB — the same as previous leaks.

All this points to an exciting Google I/O in May. We’ll likely learn lots more about the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a at the event (assuming it doesn’t all leak before then).

Pixel smartphone spotted at the FCC

A new Google handset has appeared at the FCC; however, it’s unclear what device it is. The dreamer in me would like to believe it’s the Pixel Fold; however, it can also be the Pixel 7a, but phones are rumoured to launch in the coming months.

The new listings are G0DZQ, GHL1X, and GWKK3, which all reference another model, G82U8. These are all four model numbers and describe the same phone, but it’s unclear why. This may be the Pixel 7a, spotted in an early hands-on back in January.

The phone is expected to feature a ‘Smooth Display,’ a refresh rate that can adjust from 60Hz to 90Hz.

This model could be a Pixel Fold; however, rumours are blurry on when the phone is supposed to release. One leak indicates the smartphone will launch in May alongside the Pixel 7a, whereas another leak says the handset will launch the Pixel Fold will launch in Q3.

It’s unclear when Google will have its I/O conference, but it’s likely to take place in May when we will see at least one of these products.

Pixel Fold rumoured to sport heavier frame and bigger battery than Z Fold 4

Google is still on track to release its first foldable, but the device might be one of the heaviest on the market, according to 9to5Google, which says it received the information from a reliable source.

9to5 has learned that the Pixel Fold will be heavier than the Fold 4’s 263g, and weightier than even the 250g Surface Duo. This makes the foldable seem more like a small tablet than a smartphone.

However, the weight is due to the foldable’s larger battery size. 9to5 hasn’t revealed the smartphone’s exact weight, but it will be bigger than the Z Fold 4’s 4,400mAh battery and the Oppo Find N2’s 4,520mAh battery. The Pixel Fold’s battery will still be smaller than 5,000 milliamps, however.

Alongside the larger battery, the Pixel Fold is poised to measure 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7mm (8.3mm including rear camera bump) and 14mm thick when folded. These measurements make the device wider and thicker than the Z Fold 4.

9to5 says that the having a wider internal display in a more rectangular shape instead od Samsung’s squared shape, which will work with large-screen optimization for tablets, as the phone will offer the same aspect ratio.

The handset is rumoured to launch in May alongside Google IO 0r October when Google unveils the Pixel 8 series.
