Rogers ends several wireless promos, some plans increase by $5/mo

Toronto-based national telecom Rogers has ended several of its ongoing promotional offers, increasing the cost of some plans by $5/mo and offering less data with others.

First, Rogers’ base $85/mo plan lost its 15GB data bonus, going from 40GB to 25GB. It appears Rogers started offering the extra data in early March, but it’s not clear exactly when. This plan wasn’t marked as a limited-time offer like Rogers’ other plans.

Next up, Rogers’ increased the cost of its 45GB and 50GB plans by $5/mo. Rogers rolled out discounts for these plans on March 8th and both plans have sported limited-time labels since then. The plans now cost:

  • $95/mo for 45GB
  • $100/mo for 50GB, unlimited Canada-U.S. calling, texting, and data

Finally, Rogers still offers its $175/mo 100GB plan, although it appears unchanged.

Prior to the discounts rolled out in March, Rogers changed its $110/65GB plan to $100/50GB. In February, the company raised the prices of its plans across the board.

At the time of publication, Bell and Telus hadn’t changed their plan offerings. Both carriers offered $85/25GB and $100/50GB plans. Telus also has a $90/40GB plan, while Bell has a $95/45GB plan. You can check out Telus’ plans here and Bell’s plans here.

Bell increases its $90/mo 45GB plan to $95

Hot on the heels of increasing some existing customers’ bills by $3/mo, Bell has upped one of its in-market plans by $5/mo.

Bell’s ‘Unlimited 45’ plan with 45GB of data now costs $95/mo instead of $90. However, it’s worth noting that Bell previously changed the plan from $95 to $90 at the beginning of March, and before that, it cost $90/mo for 40GB in February.

Beyond the return to $95/mo, it appears nothing else has changed with Bell’s Unlimited 45 plan. It still offers 45GB of data at typical network speed followed by unlimited use at throttled speeds of up to 512Kbps once customers surpass the cap.

Along with that, the plan includes 5G access, support for up to “HD Video streaming” (1080p), hotspot capabilities, and unlimited international texting. There’s also unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, but that’s included in all of Bell’s plans.

Bell added the HD and SD video quality limits to its plans at the beginning of February.

The carrier’s other plans remain unchanged as well:

  • $85/mo ‘Essential’ plan with 25GB of data, SD video
  • $100/mo ‘Unlimited 50’ plan with 50GB of data, HD video, unlimited international texting and U.S. calling
  • $55/mo ‘Lite’ plan for additional lines with 5GB of 4G data, SD video streaming

Rogers discounts a couple plans by $5/mo for a limited time

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers discounted two of its plans by $5/mo. The move comes after Rogers replaced its $110/mo 65GB plan with a $100/mo 50GB plan.

Now, that 50GB plan costs $95/mo for a limited time. Along with the change to the 50GB plan, Rogers reduced its $95/mo 45GB plan to $90/mo.

A $5/mo discount may not sound like a huge amount, but it can add up over time. For example, $5/mo over two years adds up to $120 in total. Naturally, I’d like a larger monthly discount, but $5 off is $5 off.

Rogers’ change almost matches a similar discount Telus applied to its plans a few days ago. Both carriers have $85/mo 25GB base plans (unchanged by the new discounts) and $95/mo 50GB plans. The only real difference is the middle plan — Rogers’ $90/mo 45GB plan to Telus’ $85/mo 40GB plan. Oh, and the other major difference is Telus’ recently-added data speed caps.

Bell also tweaked its plans, offering prices similar to Rogers and Telus, but it still has a $100/mo 50GB price.

Bell drops 45GB plan price by $5/mo, adds 15GB shareable data bonus to $85 plan

Montreal-based national carrier Bell changed up its plans slightly, reducing the price of one plan by $5/mo. The change is one of a small series of adjustments made since the carrier rolled out new plans on February 1st.

Along with the $5/mo discount, Bell also advertises its ‘Essential’ plan comes with 15GB of bonus shareable data.

The change applies to Bell’s $90/mo 45GB plan. Previously, the plan cost $95/mo for 45GB, which itself was a change from the February 1st price of $90/40GB. Arguably the current iteration of the plan is Bell’s best offer at $90/mo for 40GB of data.

Beyond the price and data bucket, Bell’s $90/mo plan remains mostly unchanged. As in February, the plan still includes “HD video streaming,” hotspot capabilities, unlimited international texting, unlimited Canada-wide calling, and access to Crave Mobile for 24 months.

It’s worth noting that Bell’s plans include an amount of data at typical network speed. Once customers use up that cap, they can continue using data at a throttled speed of up to a maximum of 512Kbps. Bell doesn’t charge data overages on these plans.

As for Bell’s $85/mo 25GB ‘Essential’ plan, it’s listed as having a bonus of 15GB of shareable data “for a limited time.” Unfortunately, at the time of publication, it was unclear whether the bonus was on top of the 25GB of data included in the plan, or if the plan’s data was split into shareable and non-shareable data buckets of 15GB and 10GB respectively. MobileSyrup has reached out to Bell for clarification on the bonus data.

It’s worth noting that the Essential plan cost $80/mo and came with 20GB of data when Bell first introduced it in February. It’s since gone up to $85/25GB.

Freedom Mobile drops $80/mo 40GB plan from roster

Shaw-owned regional carrier Freedom Mobile has removed its $80/mo 40GB plan.

Freedom changed up its plans slightly just a few days ago, adding a new $55/mo 18GB plan and bumping its Canada/U.S. plan from $85/mo with 30GB to $90/mo with 50GB of data. However, at the time, the carrier still offered that $80/40GB plan.

It’s definitely a bummer to see the plan go considering that not everyone needs (or wants) Canada/U.S. calling. The $80 plan fit nicely at the top of Freedom’s plan stack and offered a great option with lots of data but for slightly less than the Canada/U.S. plan.

It’s unclear if Freedom will bring back the plan, or offer a similar new plan, sometime in the future.

As a refresher, Freedom’s plans offer two buckets of data — Freedom data customers can use when on Freedom’s network and ‘nationwide’ data when they’re off of Freedom’s network. The data amounts mentioned above are for Freedom data — the $80/40GB plan also had 2GB of nationwide data.

If you’re looking to get that amount of nationwide data, you’ll need to pick either Freedom’s $75/30GB plan (also has 2GB of nationwide data) or the $90/mo Canada/U.S. plan (has 4GB nationwide data). Freedom’s other plans have 1GB of nationwide data.

Telus discounts its 40GB and 50GB plans by $5/mo for a limited time

Vancouver-based national carrier Telus has discounted two of its “unlimited” plans by $5/mo and raised another by $5/mo

Telus’ $90/mo 40GB plan now costs $85, while its $100/mo 50GB plan now costs $95. Both changes are marked as limited-time offers — it’s not clear how long they’ll stick around.

The $85/40GB offer is particularly good — as far as $85/mo plans go — since it’s the same price as Telus’ $85/25GB plan, but with an extra 15GB of data. More importantly, however, is that the $85/40GB plan doesn’t have the 250Mbps data speed cap that the 25GB plan has. Instead, the 40GB plan has a 1Gbps speed cap.

If the data speed caps sound weird to you, that’s likely because they’re new. Telus added speed caps to its mobile plans back in February. On the one hand, 250Mbps is probably more than enough speed for the majority of mobile users. On the other hand, it’s yet another restriction applied to obscenely expensive mobile plans. Plus, Telus applied speed caps to its flanker brand Koodo too.

It’s also worth noting that when Telus added the speed caps to its plans, the base 20GB plan cost $80/mo. Sometime between February 17th and now, Telus changed that plan to $85/mo for 25GB — it’s not entirely clear when that change happened.

Regardless, if you’re in the market for a plan with 40GB of data, Telus’ new $85/40GB plan is an all right offer by comparison — both Rogers and Bell offer $95/mo 45GB plans, but I’d happily take $10/mo in savings for 5GB less data.
