Rogers replaces $110/65GB plan with $100/50GB plan

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers changed one of its four ‘Infinite’ plans. The company’s $110/mo now costs $100, but comes with 15GB less data than before.

Overall, it appears to be a relatively minor change going from $110/65GB to $100/50GB. Nothing else about the plan appears to have changed, nor has Rogers adjusted any of its other plans.

That means customers who subscribe to the new $100/mo plan still get access to 5G (if they have a 5G-capable device and live in one of the few regions with 5G coverage), 50GB of “unlimited” data, and unlimited calling and texting in Canada and the U.S.

The unlimited data option, as with other Rogers Infinite plans, means that customers can use data at full network speed for the first 50GB. Beyond that, Rogers throttles data speeds to a maximum of up to 512Kbps. Customers can continue using data at the significantly reduced speed.

Rogers also still has its six months of free Disney+ offer going on, which is great for any customers who don’t already have Disney+.

The company’s other plans are as follows:

  • $85/mo 25GB
  • $95/mo 45GB
  • $175/mo 100GB

Ultimately, I’m not sure how “worth it” the new $100/50GB plan is for customers who don’t need the U.S. calling package. Unless you frequent the U.S., you might be better off saving the $5/mo — I don’t think most people will miss the 5GB of data. Those that do frequent the U.S., however, will benefit from the built-in U.S. calling and texting and can save money on roaming costs.

Fido removes $58/mo 10GB plan, leaves $55/8GB and $60/15GB options

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido dropped its $58/mo 10GB plan a couple of days after it became available.

While not a huge change overall, it’s now one less option for Fido customers, especially those looking to get a phone with the carrier. Fido only offers a small number of plans to customers who choose to get a phone from the carrier — with the removal of the $58/10GB option, there are now only two plans to pick from.

Customers who choose to bring their own phone have a few more options thanks to Fido’s lower-cost ‘Starter’ plans, ‘Talk & Text’ plans, and ‘Basic’ plans. Still, options remain fairly limited.

The $58/10GB plan emerged on February 24th after Fido ended its $58/15GB promotional offer. That promo plan was just the 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB of data, so it made sense that the $58/10GB was sticking around after the end of the promotion.

The two remaining ‘Data, Talk & Text’ plans are $55/mo 8GB and $60/mo 15GB. This matches what Bell’s Virgin Plus offers. Telus’ Koodo still offers the $58/15GB promo plan, but it’s set to end on February 27th. It’s unclear what plans Koodo will offer after the promo ends, but they will likely be similar to the current Fido and Virgin plans.

Koodo to remove $58/15GB promo and $52/8GB plans on February 27

Telus flanker brand Koodo will stop offering its $52/mo 8GB and $58/mo 15GB plans on February 27th.

In a recent update to its website, Koodo added new text detailing the “offer” end date to both plans. However, it’s worth noting that the $58/mo 15GB option was the only promotional offer.

The move comes after both Fido and Virgin Plus tweaked plans to replace their $52/8GB and $58/15GB plans with $55/8GB and $60/15GB plans respectively. It’s unclear what plans Koodo will offer on February 27th once it removes the old offers, but I’d be surprised if Koodo didn’t match Fido and Virgin.

This will likely mark the end of Koodo’s $58/15GB promo plan, which has been available on and off since January 22nd.

As a refresher, the $58 promo plan was actually a 10GB plan with a 5GB data bonus. It’s possible Koodo may follow Fido and keep the $58/10GB plan but remove the bonus data. Regardless, we’ll see what happens in a few days.

Koodo does still offer ‘Starter’ plans that are cheaper and have less data, but Koodo also restricts those to bring-your-own-phone customers.

Finally, it’s also worth keeping in mind that Koodo recently added data speed caps to its plans, limiting them from going over 100Mbps down. While 100Mbps is likely still suitable for most mobile tasks, it’s frustrating that yet another restriction has been added to Canadian cell phone plans.

Fido raises plan prices by a few dollars after dropping $58/15GB deal

Rogers’ flanker brand Fido rolled out increased plan prices, marking an end to its ongoing $58/15GB deal.

Fido’s on-again-off-again $58/15GB deal came back on February 17th after the provider removed it for a few days. However, it seems unlikely the plan will come back again — it’s been replaced with a $60/mo 15GB plan. Like other flanker brands Koodo and Virgin Plus, the $58/15GB deal was actually a 10GB plan with a bonus 5GB of data.

It’s worth noting Bell’s Virgin Plus similarly replaced its $58/15GB promo plan with a $60/15GB plan. However, unlike Virgin Plus, Fido kept its 10GB plan around — it costs $58 per month.

Finally, Fido increased the cost of its 8GB plan from $52 to $55/mo.

Although the price increase isn’t huge, it’s still frustrating to see. It’s especially annoying when you consider these three plans are the only ones Fido offers to customers who want to buy a phone. The provider has cheaper ‘Starter’ plans, but those are limited to customers who bring their own devices.

Virgin Plus bumps up plan prices by $2 or $3 per month

Bell flanker brand Virgin Plus raised the price of two of its main three plan offers, marking an end to some ongoing deals.

Back in January, Virgin — alongside Telus’ Koodo — added $58/mo 15GB promotional plans. In both cases, the plans were marked as 10GB plans with 5GB data bonuses. They were also limited-time offers. Fast forward to February 17th, Virgin Plus attached an end date of February 22nd to the $58/15GB plan.

Now that the date has come and gone, Virgin Plus has replaced the $58/15GB plan with a $60/mo 15GB plan. Sure, an extra $2/mo isn’t a whole lot, but it adds up over time. Moreover, the new $60 plan appears to be a 15GB plan, not a 10GB plan with bonus data tacked on.

Along with the $60/15GB plan, Virgin upped the price of its 8GB plan from $52/mo to $55/mo. Otherwise, the plan remains unchanged.

What’s particularly frustrating about these changes is these plans are effectively the only options for customers who want to get a phone from Virgin. The provider offers several ‘Starter’ plans with less data and lower monthly costs, but those plans have caps on the data speed and aren’t available unless customers bring their own device.

As for the other flanker brands, Koodo’s plans remained unchanged at the time of publication. Rogers’ Fido, however, also updated its plans with more expensive options — you can read more here.

Telus adds speed caps of 250Mbps and 1Gbps to its mobile plans

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has added speed caps to its “unlimited” data plans.

According to the details listed on Telus’ website, the carrier’s three primary plans cap speeds at 250 megabits per second (Mbps) or 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). These speed caps differ from the reduced speed Telus applies to customers who go over their data limits.

The carriers plans, at the time of writing, remained unchanged:

  • ‘Unlimited 20 5G’ – $80/mo 20GB (250Mbps speed cap)
  • ‘Unlimited 40 5G+’ – $90/mo 40GB (1Gbps speed cap)
  • Unlimited 50 5G+’ – $100/mo 50GB and Canada-U.S. talk and text (1Gbps speed cap)

These speed caps apply to customers’ data buckets — once you go over that allotment, Telus will still throttle speeds to a maximum of up to 512Kbps as before.

Considering Canada’s ‘Big Three’ carriers tend to copy each other, Telus’ addition of speed caps is rather concerning. That said, it’s worth noting that as of publication, Rogers and Bell still only applied the 512Kbps speed cap to data beyond the plan’s bucket. Moreover, it’s frustrating to see yet another restriction applied to what are already some of the most expensive mobile plans in the world.

There are ways carriers could add speed caps that might be good. For example, a system similar to home internet where customers pay based on speed but have unlimited usage could appeal to some users. Alternatively, offering speed-capped plans with a discount may also be an option. But applying speed caps to already-limited (and incredibly expensive) data buckets isn’t acceptable.

Not to mention that 5G in Canada remains sub-par. Since I switched to 5G, I haven’t seen mobile speeds exceed about 150Mbps on my phone — on my old LTE plan, I frequently saw speeds as high as 300Mbps.

Rogers increased several plan prices by $5 or $10 per month

Rogers increased the price of three of its four plans by $5 or $10, but also tacked on slightly higher data amounts.

The changes apply to Rogers’ ‘Infinite’ plans, which offer “unlimited” data, although a better way to look at it is overage-free data.

The “unlimited” data is actually a set bucket of data that customers can use at typical network speed — once customers go beyond that allotment, Rogers throttles speeds to a maximum of up to 512Kbps download and upload. However, customers can continue using data at the throttled speed without being charged overages.

The plans also include unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, and picture and video messaging, enhanced voicemail, call and name display, call waiting, forwarding and group calling, and more.

It’s worth noting that the $110/mo plan now includes unlimited Canada-U.S. calling and texting. That change actually brings the plan more in line with Bell and Telus, which both offer Canada-U.S. talk and text on their more expensive plans (although both offer the plan at $100/mo with 50GB of data).

Moreover, Rogers also increased the monthly discount given for additional lines from $15/mo to $20/mo. That means that each extra line added to your Rogers account is $20 cheaper, although for most people the monthly bill will still end up being slightly more expensive (e.g. three lines with the old $80/mo plan and $15 add-a-line discount would come to $210/mo total, while the new $85/mo plan and $20 add-a-line discount would total to $215/mo).

Beyond that, Rogers’ plan perks have changed too. Customers can still get six months of free Disney+ with select plans, but it appears that the six months of free Apple Music offer is no longer available.

Koodo’s $58/15GB promo plan returns just days after being removed

Just two days after removing the $58/15GB promotional plan, Telus flanker brand Koodo re-added the offer to its website.

As before, Koodo’s $58 plan comes with 10GB of data and a bonus 5GB of data. Once again, Koodo lists the plan as a limited-time offer, although it’s unclear how long the promo will stick around (or if it will return after Koodo inevitably removes it). Oddly, Koodo’s website also still lists the $58/10GB version of the plan, although it doesn’t make sense to buy while the 15GB variant is available.

Koodo first added the $58/15GB plan back in January but removed it in February. Rogers’ Fido also offered the plan, removed it, then added it back on February 11th. Bell’s Virgin Plus has the $58/15GB promo as well but hasn’t followed the others in removing and re-adding it.

None of Koodo’s other plans have changed, and the $58/15GB promo is still available for customers who bring their own phone or customers who buy a phone on Koodo’s Tab.

All of Koodo’s plans include call display, voicemail, call waiting, and conference calling. Most of the carrier’s plans — including the $58/15GB promo — also offer unlimited Canada-wide calling and unlimited international messaging.
