Koodo, Virgin Plus bump $55/8GB plan up to 10GB

Late last month, Koodo, Virgin Plus and Fido rolled out double data deals on select BYOP plans. Those deals are still on, but now Koodo and Virgin Plus are back with another deal for those looking to spend a little less money and get a little less data.

Both flanker brands previously offered $55/mo 8GB plans, but they recently bumped those plans up to 10GB of data. Koodo’s website lists the $55/mo plan as an 8GB plan with a bonus 2GB, while Virgin Plus lists the plan as a flat 10GB, though it’s restricted to new activations.

At the time of writing, Fido still offered a $55/mo 8GB plan.

Thanks to this change, Koodo and Virgin now offer plans that give customers an extra 10GB of data for an extra $5/mo. At $55/10GB, $60/20GB and $65/30GB, there are some decent options out there (at least compared to what the providers offered before).

Along with the 10GB of data, the $55/mo plans also include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, and data at 4G speeds (Koodo says this is up to 100Mbps while Virgin is up to 150Mbps). The providers offer some other benefits as well, such as Koodo’s Pick Your Perk options or Virgin’s Member Benefits. Oh, and they both offer roaming packages that just got more expensive.

Telus, Rogers, Bell kill 60GB plan, replace it with $105/100GB plan

At the big three Canadian carriers, 100GB of data is the new 60GB.

Telus, Rogers and Bell all updated their websites within the last day or so to replace their 60GB plans with 100GB plans for the same price. At all three, customers now have the option to get a $105/mo plan with 100GB of data at up to 1Gbps speeds (throttled to 512Kbps beyond the 100GB cap).

Along with the data, the plans also include Canada and U.S. access for calling, texting and data. Customers also get unlimited calling and texting and some other benefits, depending on the carrier — this includes things like voicemail, perks like Disney+ or Crave, and more.

Earlier this year, Telus, Rogers and Bell all offered $105/mo 60GB plans and $125/mo 100GB plans. However, it seems like the 60GB option is gone now, and the 100GB plan price was reduced to take its place.

Moreover, the three carriers still offer $85/25GB plans and $95/50GB plans (except Rogers, which has $95/40GB instead). Bell and Rogers also offer $55/mo “Lite” plans for additional lines.

It’s worth noting that the change comes after Bell and Telus announced plans to increase the cost of their roaming packages later in March. For some, the Canada-U.S. plan will work as a decent replacement for the U.S. roaming package, but it depends on how often you travel stateside.

Telus increasing Easy Roam cost starting March 8th

Last month, MobileSyrup detailed a price increase coming to Bell’s roaming service. Now Telus plans to increase the cost of its similar Easy Roam service.

As first spotted by iPhone in Canada, a notice on Telus’ website warns that starting on March 8th, 2023, Easy Roam will increase from $12 to $14/day for U.S. roaming and from $15 to $16/day for international roaming.

Though it may not seem like much, the price increase adds up really quickly. Currently, Telus caps U.S. fees at $240 per billing cycle, and international fees at $300 per billing cycle, or about 20 days of Easy Roam use. It’s not clear if Telus will stick with the current caps or increase them to match 20 days of usage with the new prices (that would be about $280 for U.S. Easy Roam and $320 for international Easy Roam).

It’s also unclear if Telus’ flanker brand, Koodo, will increase roaming prices. Koodo also offers the Easy Roam program, which currently costs the same as the pre-increase Telus price. However, at the time of writing, there wasn’t an increase notice on the Koodo website. MobileSyrup reached out to Koodo for clarification but did not receive a response in time for publication.

When Bell increased the cost of its roaming package, it also increased the price for its flanker brand, Virgin Plus. Bell’s roaming increase comes into effect on March 9th and will cost $13/day for U.S. roaming and $16/day for international roaming.

Finally, iPhone in Canada noted that Telus changed Easy Roam’s activation from being valid for 24 hours to being “valid until 11:59pm in the time zone you are travelling.” This makes Easy Roam worse value than before.

It’s worth noting that Telus, like other carriers, has steadily increased the price of Easy Roam over the last few years. When U.S. and international roaming first launched (in 2015 and 2016, respectively), it cost $7/day for U.S. roaming and $10/day for international roaming.

Now that Telus and Bell will increase roaming costs in March, Rogers is the last of the Big Three to have not made a similar announcement. It remains to be seen if it will follow suit or keep roaming prices the same.

Virgin Plus, Koodo roll out double data deals on select BYOP plans

Bell flanker brand Virgin Plus and Telus flanker brand Koodo both have double data deals on select plans when customers bring their own phones.

The offers are online and can net users as much as 30GB of data per month for $65 or less and come just a week after Virgin and Koodo ended their $10/mo Lunar New Year discounts.

Starting with Virgin Plus, the provider currently has two online exclusive offers, though they’re only for new activations and if you bring your own phone (BYOP). The first is $60/mo for 10GB of data with a 10GB bonus for 20GB total.

Similarly, Virgin offers a $65/mo plan with 15GB of data and a bonus 15GB of data for 30GB total. It’s worth noting that Virgin also lists those plans without the bonus data, so make sure you select the right one if you choose to take advantage of the offer.

Koodo also has the double-data offers for BYOP plans but with additional savings. Like Virgin, Koodo has a $65/mo plan with 15GB of data and 15GB of bonus data for 30GB total. However, Koodo also lists the plan as being available for $50/mo for 15 months, making it a far better deal than Virgin’s version.

Koodo also has the $60/mo 10GB plan with 10GB of bonus data for 20GB total, but it doesn’t have a discounted price.

At the time of writing, Rogers’ flanker brand Fido did not have a similar double-data offer, though given how these providers operate, I expect Fido will roll out a similar offer soon.

Telus reportedly considered removing $85/mo 25GB plan, adjusting other plan prices

MobileSyrup has learned details of changes Telus planned to implement to its mobile offerings starting February 21st, which include eliminating the lowest cost plan and adjusting pricing across the board.

These upcoming plan changes were linked to a change Telus made to its website that MobileSyrup reported on earlier this week. On February 15th, Telus added a banner to the plans on its website warning that the plans would end on February 20th. Following publication, Telus removed the banners from the website.

A Telus spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that the banners were put up “in error” and were taken down.

According to the information obtained by MobileSyrup, Telus backtracked on the forthcoming plan changes and scrapped the plans. MobileSyrup understands that Telus doesn’t know if or when it will make the changes.

A Telus spokesperson told MobileSyrup that “nothing is changing” with the current plans on its website and didn’t respond to questions about whether Telus had previously intended to change its plans.

Based on the information obtained by MobileSyrup, Telus planned to remove its current base plan, which offers 25GB of 5G data at speeds of up to 250Mbps (throttled to 512Kbps beyond the 25GB) for $85/mo. The plan also includes Telus’ standard suite of features, including unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting, shareable data, voicemail and more.

Next, Telus planned to offer a $90/mo plan at the base level. This plan would include 50GB of 5G+ data — Telus’ current 5G+ plan offer data with speeds of up to 1Gbps (again, throttled to 512Kbps beyond the data allotment). This plan appears to be a slightly cheaper version of Telus’ current $95/50GB 5G+ plan.

The other changes shared with MobileSyrup include adding a $100/mo plan with 100GB of 5G+ data and a $110/100GB 5G+ plan. The difference between these two plans would be the $110 option includes Canada/U.S. calling, texting and data. Those appear to be replacements for Telus’ current $105/60GB and $125/100GB plans, both of which offer Canada/U.S. calling.

Aside from removing the $85/mo plan, these changes generally appear positive with slightly lower prices and the same or more data. It remains to be seen if Telus will eventually make these changes.

Telus website adds banner to plans warning they end on February 20

Vancouver-based national telecom Telus has added notices to its website that several of its current plans end on February 20th.

MobileSyrup spotted the change on February 15th when a purple banner that reads “Ends February 20th” appeared on all four of Telus’ in-market plans.

Telus did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.

It’s not clear what, exactly, the banners mean or what customers can expect come February 20th. The likely scenario is that Telus will deploy new or updated plans, perhaps with new pricing. It’s also possible the change was a mistake on Telus’ part. The current plans are listed below:

  • $85/mo Unlimited 25 5G – 25GB of data at up to 250Mbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and text
  • $95/mo Unlimited 50 5G+ – 50GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited nationwide talk and international text
  • $105/mo Unlimited CAN-US 60 5G+ – 60GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.
  • $125/mo Unlimited CAN-US 100 5G+ – 100GB of data at up to 1Gbps speed, unlimited talk, international text, unlimited talk, text and data in the U.S.

It’s worth noting that Telus currently offers “unlimited” data, which means customers can keep using data beyond the plan’s allotment, but at a slower, throttled speed of up to 512Kbps.

Freedom Mobile drops $15/mo 500MB plan

Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile appears to have removed one of its lower-cost ‘Freedom’ Starter plans.

An update to Freedom Mobile’s website spotted by MobileSyrup saw the removal of the provider’s $15/mo 500MB plan. The plan included 250MB of LTE data on the Freedom network along with a bonus 250MB for 500MB total monthly data.

Additionally, the plan included unlimited Canada-wide calling and incoming calls, unlimited global text, picture and video messaging, and Voicemail+.

Freedom’s $15/mo plan is no longer listed on its website.

When customers leave the Freedom network and use ‘Freedom Nationwide’ on a partner network, the plan includes 100 minutes of calls to Canada, unlimited incoming calls, and unlimited texting.
