Sony partnering with WWF-Canada, donating $1 from each copy of Horizon Forbidden West

To celebrate the launch of Guerilla’s Horizon Forbidden West, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced its partnership with WWF-Canada. Together, the two will be working towards habitat restoration in British Columbia.

SIE has confirmed that $1 CAD from each copy of Horizon Forbidden West sold in Canada will be donated to WWF-Canada. The company is committed to donating a maximum of $100,000, starting today.

WWF-Canada is responsible for helping to rehabilitate the seagrass around the coast of British Columbia. Seagrass is a vital food for the ecosystem and an important shelter resource for aquatic life. WWF-Canada also states that restoring seagrass can aid in absorbing carbon dioxide.

Horizon Forbidden West centres on a post-apocalyptic world. It features themes of restoring the natural environment. Aloy is on a quest to save life on earth from deadly machines. Though, as civilization has fallen, the world of Forbidden West sees nature taking over. Overgrown greenery and clear blue oceans are amongst the rich environments of the game. Although the game features heavy sci-fi aspects, it largely tackles subjects like biodiversity. On top of that, climate change and other parallels draw from today’s world.

In addition to partnering with WWF-Canada, SIE is collaborating with other global partners. This includes the Arbor Day Foundation in the US and The Eden Project in the UK.

SIE has also announced its Road to Zero plan. This outline covers the commitment to achieve a zero environmental footprint by 2050. This will mean altering the life cycle of its products and business activities during this period. Plus, SIE has purchased carbon offsets from and certified by the Gold Standard organization.

Horizon Forbidden West is one of this year’s most anticipated games. As the game is available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Therefore, there’s little reason to doubt SIE will achieve the sales required to donate the full $100,000 to WWF-Canada.

Latest PS4 and PS5 beta now rolling out to select participants

A new PS4 and PS5 beta is now rolling out to select participants in Canada, the U.S., Japan, U.K., Germany and France.

Additionally, participants in the U.S. and U.K. can now preview a feature that enables voice commands for finding and opening games, apps and controlling media playback.

If you aren’t selected for this beta, the full update will launch globally later this year. Here’s what the beta includes:

Party Chat Update

When you start a party, you can select whether to create an open or closed party. An open party lets friends see and join a party without an invite, and friends of party members can also join. A closed party is only for players you invite. Open and Closed parties were already a feature, but now you don’t have to go into any menus to start them.

There’s also now a voice chat reporting feature, so if you want to report something that someone said, there are now visual indicators for you to identify who was speaking.

Additionally, in the PS5 beta, you can start a Share Play directly from the voice chat card; this means you don’t need to start Share Screen first to use Share Play.

On the PS4 beta, you can individually adjust the voice of each player in a party, similar to PS5.

Voice chats are also called ‘Parties’ again, and the Game Base menu is now divided into three tabs: ‘Friends,’ ‘Parties,’ and ‘Messages.’

Two other Game Base updates include an “on-air” icon when someone is sharing their screen and a button that will let users quickly decline a friend request.

New PS5 UI Features

Beta participants will now be able to filter their game collection by genre. You can also choose up to five games or apps to keep on the home screen by selecting “Keep in Home” with the options button. However, you can also keep up to a total of 14 games and apps on your home screen.

There’s now a new trophies UI update that shows a cool visual design of trophy cards on the trophy list and sees suggestions for which trophies you can earn on the trophy tracker.

You can also start the Share Screen from the Create menu and stream your gameplay to an open party.

Accessibility features

There are new accessibility features, including a screen reader, which reads aloud on-screen text and spoken guidance for operating the console. Additionally, there’s now mono audio for headphones instead of a stereo or 3D audio sound mix. This should provide a better experience for players with unilateral hearing loss.

You can also show a checkmark on enabled settings so you can see which settings are turned out.

PlayStation will use Bungie to help launch more than 10 live service games by 2026

Earlier this week, Sony made significant waves in the gaming space by announcing that it will acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion USD (about $4.6 billion CAD).

Now, the company has revealed more about its plans for the Destiny studio during its latest investor call.

“The strategic significance of this acquisition lies not only in obtaining the highly successful Destiny franchise, as well as major new IP Bungie is currently developing, but also incorporating into the Sony group the expertise and technologies Bungie has developed in the live game services space,” said Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki. “Through close collaboration between Bungie and PlayStation Studios we aim to launch more than 10 live service games by the fiscal year ending March 2026.”

This makes a lot of sense for PlayStation. While the studio has built up a reputation for delivering massively successful single-player games like The Last of Us, God of WarMarvel’s Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima, it hasn’t had a major standout multiplayer title. By contrast, rival Xbox has lacked the same strong single-player output but has had multiple ongoing popular multiplayer titles, including Sea of Thieves and, most recently, Halo Infinite.

To compensate for that, PlayStation has largely relied on exclusive content and marketing deals with popular multiplayer games like Destiny or Call of Duty. Therefore, Bungie’s extensive history in creating successful online titles should prove invaluable in PlayStation’s efforts to expand its catalogue.

As for what those 10-plus live service games will be? Well, we have a few ideas.

In terms of Bungie, job listings from last year suggested that the developer’s new IP will be a multiplayer “character action” game, although it’s not expected to come before 2025.

Meanwhile, Naughty Dog is confirmed to be working on multiple projects, including a standalone multiplayer suite for The Last of Us Part II. The 2020 action-adventure game was originally supposed to have multiplayer like its predecessor, but it was scrapped in favour of focusing on the campaign.

And finally, Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla and PlayStation VR Worlds developer London Studio have been hiring for unknown online games.

Sony’s MLB The Show 22 coming to Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch in April

PlayStation has confirmed that its MLB The Show 22 baseball game is coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one when it launches on April 5th.

In addition to the base Xbox Game Pass service for Xbox consoles, MLB The Show 22 will come to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s Cloud Gaming on that date, making it available for streaming on mobile devices and in browsers. Last year’s MLB The Show 21 also launched on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

In case you missed it, the historically PlayStation-exclusive franchise went multi-platform last year following a revised licensing deal with MLB. As part of this new arrangement, MLB The Show 22 will also launch on Nintendo Switch on April 5th, marking the series’ debut on a Nintendo platform. What’s more, cross-play, saves and progression will be supported between PlayStation 4/5, Xbox consoles and Nintendo Switch.

All of these announcements came during a reveal event in New York’s Times Square in which Los Angeles Angels player Shohei Ohtani was confirmed to be MLB The Show 22‘s cover athlete.
