Pornhub’s Year in Review breaks down this year’s Canadian stats and demographics

As 2022 is coming to a close, Pornhub has released its Year in Review wrap-up.

As the largest adult entertainment site, Pornhub reports it has over 150 million daily active visitors, and because of this, there’s no shortage of new trends, searches and interesting stats to highlight.

As part of Pornhub’s Year in Review, the site has provided a full rundown of stats pertaining to Canada. First up is the overall placement as far as traffic is concerned. Canada once again finds itself in the Top 20 Countries listed by traffic. In 2022, Canada fell to the eighth spot, overtaken by Germany. The U.S. is listed in first place, with the U.K. in second.

Time spent per visit is also broken down by Pornhub. The average time on the site per visit is estimated at nine minutes and 54 seconds, a decrease of 20 seconds when comparing 2021’s stats. Canada’s average falls slightly short at nine minutes and 28 seconds. However, Egypt leads the charge with 11 minute and 12-second average.

Next, let’s take a look at traffic per device in Canada. This year, Pornhub reports that 75 percent of Canada’s traffic is made by way of mobile devices. Desktop usage continues to dwindle, with this year’s usage at a reported 20 percent in the country. Tablet usage is firm at five percent. As far as operating systems worldwide, it’s a close race. However, Android users snuff out Apple with a 51.5 to 48.3 percent split. “Other” is listed as 0.2.

Demographics is also a highlight in this year’s Year in Review. Pornhub reports that the 18-24 group encompasses 22 percent of Canada’s visitors. 25-34 make up the majority with 27 percent. 35-44 comes in at 20 percent. 45-54 lands at 14 percent. 55-64 tallies up to 10 percent. 65+ rounds out the demographics with a mere six percent.

Another interesting metric to look at is the worldwide traffic of gaming consoles. Once again, PlayStation players reign supreme in this race. This year, PlayStation saw a 20.6 percent increase in traffic, putting the platform at 73.1 percent. Xbox’s traffic numbers fell this year, with the console now at 25.5 percent in second place. PS Vita and Nintendo (Wii U and 3DS) are listed in third and fourth, both at 0.8 percent, respectively.

Speaking of video games, Pornhub has a laundry list of ‘Most Searched Video Game Characters.’ The top five include ‘Overwatch Dva,’ ‘Minecraft Jenny Mod,’ Overwatch Widowmaker,’ ‘Resident Evil Lady Dimitrescu,’ and ‘Overwatch Mercy.’ The top five ‘Most Searched Video Games’ include Fortnite, Overwatch, Genshin Impact, Minecraft and Pokemon.

Finally, Pornhub reveals the ‘World’s Most Viewed Categories.’ In Canada, ‘Lesbian’ is the country’s most searched category. It just so happens that the category is also in first place in ‘Most Viewed Categories of 2022.’

More details on Pornhub’s Year in Review can be found on its website.

It should be noted that Pornhub’s parent company MindGeek was founded in Quebec. In 2020, the platform removed content from unverified users following a New York Times investigation that revealed several inappropriate and illegal videos, including some involving minors. Visa and Mastercard then cut ties with all of Mindgeek’s websites.

Pornhub’s traffic dropped nearly 20 percent due to Rogers outage

Montreal-based Pornhub says it saw a nearly 20 percent drop in traffic thanks to the July 8th Rogers outage, falling in line with previous estimates that the outage took out roughly a quarter of the country’s internet traffic.

In a report from Pornhub (that link is SFW!), the company says it started to see traffic drop almost immediately after the outage began. By 7am ET, hourly traffic to Pornhub was down 19 percent compared to the same hour on an average day. Moreover, traffic remained below average for the rest of the day, including another 19 percent drop in the early evening.

Interestingly, Pornhub said traffic returned to average levels early Saturday morning, but dropped again throughout the day.

The company noted that 90 percent of Canada’s traffic to Pornhub comes from mobile phones, so it also shared a comparison of mobile and desktop traffic. The latter saw a larger drop of 21 percent in the late afternoon on July 8th.

Finally, Pornhub compared the impacts on Canadian provinces. New Brunswick saw the most immediate drop, falling 49 percent by 6am. Manitoba had the biggest drop in traffic, falling 65 percent by 11am. It also didn’t see the same recovery on Saturday that most provinces did.

Ontario’s traffic dropped as low as 38 percent at 4pm on Friday. At that time, Nova Scotia’s traffic was down 35 percent and Quebec’s was down 21 percent.

Pornhub says it determined percent changes in traffic by comparing the July 8th traffic to average levels of the same day of the week, and the same hour of the day, from the two previous weeks.

Roku to close loophole that allowed porn channels on the platform

Roku will change up how it lets developers test apps and remove private channels in March 2022, effectively closing a loophole that allowed adult content providers, such as Montreal-based Pornhub, to offer content on the platform.

As reported by Protocol and The Verge, Roku announced a new ‘Independent Developer Kit’ and a new beta channel feature to replace existing tools like private channels. The former is a way for developers and hobbyists to experiment with apps and services without needing to use Roku’s software development kit (SDK), while the latter will allow developers to test channels with up to 20 users at a time.

The beta channel feature will replace private channels — or “uncertified channels,” as Roku likes to call them. The private channels system allowed developers to create channels without listing them in Roku’s Channel Store. However, they required a code to activate (or a direct link via Roku’s website).

Although private channels were intended for testing purposes, some developers used them to provide content that Roku doesn’t allow in its Channel Store — for example, porn.

Protocol reports that private channels from Pornhub and other adult content platforms such as Adult Empire, AEBN, Wicked, Adult Time and Naughty America are expected to disappear on March 1st.

Before this change, Roku effectively turned a blind eye to private channels, although it ran into issues for ignoring them. For example, a Mexican cable TV operator took Roku to court because people were able to access pirated content through private channels.

That led to Roku displaying a warning message when users attempted to access a private channel. The warning message said that Roku may remove private channels containing illegal content without notice and that Roku could ban repeat infringers from accessing other private channels.

Protocol notes that although there was also criticism of adult content on adult channels, it likely wasn’t the catalyst behind this change. Instead, Protocol suggests Roku’s move was to further lock down its Channel Store so that developers couldn’t bypass the rules, much like how Apple cracked down on its enterprise program to stop developers using it to bypass the App Store rules.
