Amazon mulling standalone Prime Video sports app: report

Amazon reportedly could launch a standalone app for its sports content in an effort to declutter Prime Video.

Per The Information (via Engadget), the standalone app would highlight Amazon’s deals with the NFL, Premier League, and New York Yankees. Moreover, it comes as Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said live sports content was one area where Amazon plans to keep spending money despite cuts in other places.

However, it seems like the standalone app plan is still early stages. The Information wasn’t able to learn when Amazon will release the app or if it plans to charge separately for access to Prime Video’s sports content. Moreover, The Information said Amazon could shelve the app entirely.

A separate app for sports content could go a long way in helping to simplify the Prime Video interface. However, adding a simple sports category or section could help with that as well. A dedicated app for sports streaming could introduce some extra features sports fans would welcome — for example, access to alternate replay views.

As for whether Amazon would offer a separate subscription for sports, that could be less likely. Separating Prime Video subscriptions might hamper its ability to drive Prime subscriptions overall, even if it’s better for customers who can pick and choose whether they want sports or other content.

Of course, this is all speculation, and it remains to be seen what, if any, changes come alongside the standalone sports app — assuming Amazon even chooses to release the app.

Prime Video has already started filming season 2 of The Rings of Power

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season one is only partway through streaming, and the series has already started filming its second season.

The second season has entered production in the United Kingdom. In the second season, we’ll meet Cirdan, one of the eldest and wisest elves, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s worth noting that Galadriel herself is an elf over 1,000 years old, so Cirdan must be very old.

The first season of the show was filmed in New Zealand over 18 months during the pandemic, but it looks like Amazon has moved production of the second season to the U.K., which is more affordable and where “the company is establishing a multi-show hub,” according to The Hollywood Reporter

Season two will feature eight episodes, similar to The Rings of Power’s first season.

The news of the second season comes after the series hit number 1one on the streaming charts and amassed more than 1.3 billion minutes viewed, even though it was only the first two episodes that had been released at the time.

The Rings of Power’s was very expensive to make for Amazon, with season one costing $426 million USD (about $580,275 CAD).

The second season doesn’t have a release date or even a release window yet. Episode seven of The Rings of Power’s airs on October 7th on Prime Video.

Elon Musk bashes Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings, feels threatened by female character

Elon Musk is not a fan of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The controversial Tesla CEO took to Twitter on Labour Day to slam the buzzworthy Prime Video series, claiming that creator J.R.R. Tolkien is “turning in his grave” over it.

“Almost every male character so far is a coward, a jerk or both. Only Galadriel is brave, smart and nice,” tweeted Musk.

He’s referring to the Elven warrior played by Morfyyd Clark, who some have taken issue with for being a tough warrior. In Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, set thousands of years later, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) is portrayed as a more regal and serene character.

It should be noted, though, that only two episodes of The Rings of Power‘s eight-episode first season have been released so far, and Amazon is planning at least four more seasons. Therefore, it’s quite premature to already be getting upset about the show’s depiction of characters.

In recent years, Musk has also leaned into his edgelord “anti-woke” persona, so it’s not entirely surprising that a powerful female character would bother him so much. It’s also unclear how much of Musk’s comments are driven by his feud with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, whose Blue Origin spaceflight company is a direct competitor to Musk’s own Space X. Musk is so juvenile as to wrongfully call a man a pedophile over a wounded ego, so it certainly doesn’t seem like it would be beneath him to also insult The Rings of Power to slight Bezos.

Musk isn’t the only one who’s taken umbrage over The Rings of Power. Over the past week, people have been review bombing the series, largely due to racist backlash over people of colour among the cast. This has led Amazon to add a 72-hour delay on Prime Video user reviews.

Of course, there are completely valid reasons to dislike anything, The Rings of Power included, but people like Musk certainly don’t seem to have any. As beloved The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman tweeted in response to all of this, “Elon Musk doesn’t come to me for advice on how to fail to buy Twitter, and I don’t go to him for film, TV or literature criticism.”
