Amazon drops new trailer for The Boys Season 3 ahead of June premiere

Amazon has released a new trailer for the third season of its popular The Boys series on Prime Video.

In the two-and-a-half-minute trailer, Homelander (Antony Starr) has become increasingly unhinged following the events of Season 2, while Butcher (Karl Urban) takes a special serum to temporarily become a supe and directly take on Vought. Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles can also be seen as a new character named Soldier Boy.

Fans have had to wait a bit longer for Season 3 following the October 2020 Season 2 finale, due to COVID-19 production delays. That said, it’s finally set to premiere on Prime Video on June 3rd, with new episodes rolling out every week. It’s worth noting that the series was filmed in Toronto, is executive produced by Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and co-stars Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir.

The first two seasons of The Boys, as well as the animated anthology series The Boys: Diabolical, are currently streaming on Prime Video.

Amazon has renewed Upload for Season 3

Amazon has renewed Upload for a third season.

The announcement came via a cast video posted to the Prime Video original’s official Twitter account.

In a press release, Amazon said the sci-fi comedy-drama series has become “a bona fide hit that continues to be one of the most-watched comedy originals on Prime Video.”

Created by The Office‘s Greg Daniels, Upload follows a computer programmer who, after dying prematurely, has his consciousness uploaded to a virtual afterlife. Notably, the series stars Toronto’s own Robbie Amell and is filmed in Vancouver. Andy Allo, Allegra Edwards and Zainab Johnson co-star.

The series’ second season dropped in March. A premiere date for the third season has not yet been confirmed.

Interestingly, this news comes just two weeks after another Daniels series, the Steve Carrell-led comedy Space Force, was cancelled by Netflix after its second season.

What’s your favourite video streaming platform in Canada?

Three years ago, I asked the MobileSyrup Community “what’s your favourite video streaming service in Canada?” Fast forward to now, and the Canadian movie/TV streaming landscape has changed significantly.

Crave offers its own originals, Starz, Showcase and HBO content. This week, even The Batman is streaming on Crave at the same time and date as its HBO Max release in the U.S., and only six weeks after its theatrical release.

Like always, there’s Netflix, which drops new originals multiple times per week.

Prime Video is also becoming a top player in Canada with series like The Boys, Upload, Invincible, The Wheel of Time and my personal favourite, Vox Machina. Prime Video recently held its inaugural Canadian event to spotlight 10 new Canadian originals. And it’s worth mentioning that Prime Video has access to all of its channels.

Since the last time I asked the question, two new players have also entered the Canadian market — Apple TV+ and Disney+.

Apple TV+ is the first streaming platform to win Best Picture for its original film CODA. Alongside CODA, Apple TV+ offers hit series and movies like Severance, See, After Party, The Morning Show and another personal favourite of mine, Ted Lasso.

Canada also has Disney+ with Star content (Hulu in the U.S.), which includes movies like The King’s Man, West Side Story and Fresh. There’s also content like The Kardashians, The Proud Family Louder and Prouder, Cruella, and other hit titles like Atlanta, PoseHow I Met Your Father and Modern Family. Disney+ is also the home of Marvel and Star Wars content like Moon Knight, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Shang-ChiThe Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

While Canadians have access to these five big platforms, there are also other smaller streaming services like Crunchyroll, Hayu, OUTtv, CBC Gem, CBS All Access, DAZN, Shudder, Sportsnet Now and Tubi.

I’m personally subscribed to the big five streaming platforms and use each one for various movies and TV series. If I were to choose a favourite, I’d go with Disney+ because I love Disney movies like Turning Red and Encanto and originals like Star Wars: Visions and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But don’t get me wrong, I’m also quite fond of Netflix and Crave.

Let us know in the comments below what your favourite video streaming service is. And if you’ve ever wondered what you should watch on the weekend, check out Brad Shankar’s weekly ‘Streaming in Canada‘ column where he highlights notable movies and series available on various services.

Quebec version of LOL: Last One Laughing to hit Prime Video this year

Amazon has confirmed that a Quebec-focused take on its LOL: Last One Laughing Canada series called LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier will hit Prime Video later this year.

The original series, itself an offshoot of the international LOL: Last One Laughing comedy format, pits Canadian comedians like Colin Mochrie, Dave Foley and Andrew Phung against one another to see who can keep a straight face the longest.

That format will be retained for LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier, which will be filmed in Montreal and feature an all-French cast. Stand-up comedian and actor Patrick Huard (Bon Cop, Bad Cop) is confirmed to host, although a cast has not yet been revealed.

In addition to the two LOL shows, Amazon is also developing a revival of Kids in the Hall, the Canadian sketch comedy series featuring Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson. The show is set to hit Prime Video sometime this year.

Amazon eyeing God of War TV show with PlayStation: report

Amazon is in negotiations with PlayStation to adapt the company’s God of War action game franchise into a live-action TV series for Prime Video, according to Deadline.

The outlet notes that the series is being developed by The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins. Both shows are exclusive to Prime Video.

Deadline did not mention any potential plot details for the proposed God of War series. For context, the God of War games follow Kratos, a rage-filled Spartan warrior who opposes the gods of Greek mythology. It’s unclear whether Amazon’s series would draw inspiration from Kratos’ Greek adventures, the more mature 2018 Nordic outing with his son, Atreus or even tell a new story entirely.

In any case, an adaptation of God of War makes sense for PlayStation, given that it’s one of the company’s flagship franchises. Since 2005, seven God of War games have been released, with the series’ most recent title, 2018’s God of War, garnering numerous accolades, including “Game of the Year” at The Game Awards. The highly anticipated sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, is set to come to PS4 and PS5 later this year.

It’s important to note that because the series is still being negotiated, there’s no guarantee as of yet that it will actually get made. Should a deal close, though, God of War would be the latest in a growing lineup of gaming adaptations for Amazon, including Fallout show based on the eponymous Bethesda gaming franchise from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and a rumoured Mass Effect series.

This would also be another title in the ever-growing catalogue of PlayStation Productions, a division Sony founded in 2019 to adapt its gaming properties into shows and movies. The first PlayStation Productions title, Uncharted, opened in theatres last month with strong box office success, and Sony has all but confirmed a sequel. Other PlayStation Productions include HBO’s The Last of Us show from Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and developer Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, a Ghost of Tsushima movie from John Wick director Chad Stahelski and Twisted Metal NBC Show starring Anthony Mackie.
