Sony’s PlayStation 5 reaches over 38 million unit sales

Sony has released its latest earnings report for its fiscal year ending on March 31st, and in it, the company has confirmed 38.4 million lifetime unit sales of the PlayStation 5.

The earnings report mentions that Sony shipped 6.3 million units of the PS5 in the past quarter, 1.1 million more units than anticipated in the 2022 fiscal year.

The console was released in November 2020 and was difficult to buy in its early months on the market. Thankfully, it’s now much easier to find on store shelves.

Momentum for the PS5 remains strong overall. Highly anticipated exclusive titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are still on track to launch later this year. The console is also tipped to receive a redesign soon if recent rumours are accurate.

Sony’s overall earnings for the fiscal period are equally impressive. The company’s operating profit clocked in at 1.21 trillion yen (roughly $12 billion CAN), compared to a forecasted 1.18 trillion yen ($11.7 billion CAD).

Discord voice chats launches on PS5

PlayStation 5 users are getting a new software update.

The most significant addition is a new social feature that allows users to join a Discord Voice Chat on their PS5 consoles. You need to link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts from your PS5 console, PlayStation.com or the Discord app.

You’ll then need to use the Discord app on your mobile or computer to get a Discord voice chat going on your PS5 console, and the Discord app needs to be updated to the latest version.

You can also start or request a Share Screen from your friend’s profile and send a Share Screen request or start sharing your screen with a friend directly from the profile page. You only need to click the Share Screen icon on your friend’s profile.

Other changes in the system update include variable refresh rate support for 1440p and a filter for when you add games to your game list. With the launch of PS VR2 games, you can now filter VR titles through your library.

Further updates include a ‘join game’ icon in party chats and a “friends who play’ tile that shows which games are in your game hub.

You can manually upload game capture to the PlayStation app, quickly transfer data from one PS5 to another, and more. Most updates were shared in February, but features are now rolling out to all users.

LeBron James’ ugly limited-edition PS5 accessories aren’t coming to Canada

PlayStation has teamed up with NBA star LeBron James on a limited-edition PS5 cover and DualSense controller.

The Black PS5 accessories were co-designed by James and feature quotes and imagery from his journey, including “nothing is given, everything is earned” and “build, uplift, empower.

PS5 LeBron accessories

However, PlayStation has confirmed to MobileSyrup that the accessories aren’t coming to Canada. Instead, the company has teased a separate Canada-focused collaboration with Toronto-born actor-comedian, King Bach. While it says more will be shared on that later this year, it did point to a PS5 ad with Bach that ran during the Super Bowl last month:

The partnerships with James and Bach come as part of PlayStation’s new “Playmakers” program, a promotional campaign that sees the gaming giant partner with prominent athletes, actors, artists, gamers and other figures.

That said, PlayStation previously worked with James on a decidedly strange God of War Ragnarök ad in which he, Ben Stiller and John Travolta all appeared with their respective sons.

Sony says the PlayStation 5 shortage is over

During Sony’s CES 2023 keynote, the company’s gaming division leader, Jim Ryan, confirmed that the PlayStation 5 shortage is over.

Until recently, stories regarding PS5 restocks have been top traffic performers on MobileSyrup, but over the last few months, there’s been far less interest in restock coverage. Further, at least anecdotally and online, the console seems to remain in stock for far longer than it did even just a year ago.

Still, I’ve yet actually to see a PS5 in stock at a physical retailer, while the Xbox Series X seems to be everywhere.

During the keynote, Ryan said, “PS5 supply improved towards the end of last year,” before saying that “everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward.” Ryan also revealed that December was the biggest month of PlayStation 5 sales ever.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020 amid the height of the pandemic and global supply chain issues, leading to scarcity and ridiculous prices from resellers.

Sony Honda EVs might one-up Tesla with built-in PS5

Sony and Honda may team up to bring PlayStation 5 games to electric vehicles (EVs).

Earlier this year, the two Japanese companies formed a joint venture called Sony Honda Mobility, and its CEO, Izumi Kawanishi, is now speaking on its potential for gaming. In an interview with The Financial Times, Kawanishi said it’s “technologically possible” to integrate PS5 support into Sony Honda Mobility’s future vehicles.

“Sony has content, services and entertainment technologies that move people. We are adapting these assets to mobility, and this is our strength against Tesla,” said Kawanishi.

Sony Honda Mobility plans to release its first EV in 2025, with a North American release planned for 2026. Meanwhile, Tesla has been slowly adding support for games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Cuphead, although it has yet to follow through with CEO Elon Musk’s promises to bring the massively popular RPG Cyberpunk 2077 to its EVs. Streaming services like Netflix and the U.S.-only Hulu are also available in Tesla vehicles.

That said, Tesla’s entertainment offerings rely on licensing, while Sony’s advantage, as Kawanishi points out, is already having its own properties. This includes massively popular gaming franchises like The Last of Us, God of War and Uncharted, as well as film properties like Spider-Man and Ghostbusters.

It should be noted, however, that Kawanishi’s comments aren’t actual confirmation that we’ll see PS5 games in Honda vehicles. Further, 2025-26 is quite a ways off, and the PS5 — which released in November 2020 — will presumably be at the end of its life cycle by that point.

Still, it’s interesting to hear about the potential of such technology, and time will tell how Sony Honda Mobility will use it in its vehicles.

Did you pre-order PlayStation’s DualSense Edge gamepad?

PlayStation recently unveiled the DualSense Edge, its new ultra-customizable high-end controller. With the gamepad, you’re able to change joystick caps, remap buttons, and adjust trigger lengths. Additionally, it offers mappable back buttons and an on-controller user interface, and it also comes with a braided USB-C.

With all this in mind, this is the most customizable PS5 controller that Sony has released. However, it also comes with an expensive price tag. In Canada, you’ll have to pay a whopping $269.99 for this controller.

While I like the idea of a high-end PS5 gamepad, the cost is too steep for me, especially considering it’s half the cost of the PS5 Digital Edition.

So, my question this week is: did you pre-order the DualSense Edge, or are you interested in PlayStation’s latest controller?

Let us know in the comments below.

As a side note, here’s a story that outlines 10 things you can buy instead of the DualSense Edge.

PS5 Discord voice integration spotted online

Discord is testing a voice chat feature for PlayStation 5 users, but it’s not yet available to the public. @advaithj1 on Twitter spotted the voice integration and posted the images online on the social media platform.

It’s still unclear when this feature will officially go live, but it’s rumoured to release in March. However, it appears to be in the beta version of the Discord mobile app in a closed test. However, it’s unclear if this is just an internal test at Discord.

It’s currently unclear how exactly this feature will work on the PlayStation consoles. Based on the images, you’ll need to sign in with your PlayStation ID, which then brings users to the PlayStation Mobile app. It’s suspected that it will allow the call to transfer to the PS5.

However, it’s weird this feature will only be available on PS5 and PS4, as the screenshot shows the join chat on PS5 but doesn’t say it on the PS4 section.

PlayStation already has a pretty good chat feature, so it’s unclear if PS4 players will continue on this chat service or if everyone will be forced to switch over to Discord, but only PS5 players will be able to use the app.

God of War: Ragnarök PS5 controller up for pre-order in Canada

PlayStation’s recently revealed God of War: Ragnarök-themed PS5 DualSense controller is up for pre-order in Canada.

As spotted by Twitter user @Lbabinz, the special edition gamepad can now be pre-ordered from Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop. It’s priced at $94.99 CAD.

First unveiled during September 13th State of Play presentation, the controller sports a blue-and-white pattern that’s inspired by the cool colours of God of War: Ragnarök. It also features a wolf and bear insignia to represent the game’s two lead characters, Kratos and Atreus.

It’s important to note that while Ragnarök will be available on both PS4 and PS5, Sony has only produced a special edition controller for the latter console. On the flip side, this means it features all of the DualSense’s signature features, like adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Both the controller and God of War: Ragnarök will launch on November 9th. The highly anticipated action-adventure game is a sequel to 2018’s God of War and follows Kratos and teenage son Atreus as they seek to find answers about the latter’s identity while attempting to prevent the apocalypse and survive new godly threats.
