Check out this Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 DualSense controller

While this is pretty sick gamepad, it’s not something you can buy — so don’t get too hyped.

In partnership with LetsGoDigital, Enrico Bertagnoli (aka Berta) has created a new PlayStation 5 DualSense Spider-Man: Miles Morales controller.

The cool gamepad features dark chrome red webbing that reflects in an interesting way in the light. Berta even painted the light bar red, which ends up changing its colour glow when the gamepad is turned on. The back also features a spider in a matte gray colour scheme. Graphic designer Snoreyn created the video showing off Berta’s work.

If you want to see the controller in person, you’ll need to head to the SpelComputer museum in the Netherlands, where you can see the controller displayed in a frame.

If you really want one of these, you can hit up Berta’s social channel for a custom controller. According to LetsGoDigital, if there is a lot of interest Berta might just make more in a limited quantity.

PS5 DualSense support comes to Android PlayStation Remote Play app

PlayStation’s Remote Play app on Android now supports the PS5’s DualSense controller.

This functionality rolled out on the iOS version of the app earlier this year. It’s important to note that it’s currently only available through the Android app on phones running Android 12.

With the DualSense, Android 12 users can take advantage of the controller’s unique adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in supported games.

Further, the Remote Play app update also adds touchpad, motion sensor, rumble and battery indicator support for the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller. This, too, is exclusive to Android 12 users, although general DualShock 4 compatibility remains for previous Android generations.

The PlayStation Remote Play app can be downloaded from the Play Store here.

Hackers make significant strides towards cracking Sony’s PS5

There’s a possibility that Sony’s PlayStation 5 may be crackable at some point in the future.

Over the weekend, well-known hacking group FailOverflow tweeted that it was able to get its hands on the PS5’s root key, which then allowed the console’s firmware to be decrypted. FailOverFlow was the first group to get through the PS3’s security features back in 2010.

The Verge also reported that Andy Nguyen, a security engineer at Google that goes by the online handle @theflow0, accessed the console’s debug settings. Though not directly related to FailOverFlow’s efforts, this is another example of someone circumventing Sony’s security software.

Though these exploits don’t mean much yet, in the future, it could eventually lead to hackers having more access to the PS5’s software, allowing it to be reversed-engineered. While this would allow the installation of emulators, Linux and homebrew software to be installed on the PlayStation 5, it will also, unfortunately, lead to game piracy.

It’s important to remember that Sony is likely aware of these hacks and is working to patch them. In a sense, exploits like this are inevitable and happen whenever a video game console releases. Whether it’s running emulators on the Xbox Series S/X or jailbreaking the Switch, life always finds a way.

PlayStation 5 sales have topped 13 million units

Sony has sold 13.4 million units of its PlayStation 5 console, the company revealed in its latest earnings report.

3.3 million units were sold during this quarter, compared to the 2.2 million in the previous. While the PS5 is one of many devices that is suffering from supply constraints due to the global chip shortage, that quarter-to-quarter growth at least shows some improvement.

Game sales saw an even larger increase; Sony reported 76.4 million units sold in this quarter, compared to 63.6 million in the previous quarter. The company noted this was driven in large part due to third-party titles.

However, sales of first-party titles dropped from 10.5 million to 7.6 million last quarter. This led to operating income coming in at 82.7 billion yen (about $900 million CAD), a drop from last quarter of 3.4 billion yen (about $37 million CAD).

It’s worth noting that Sony said in August that it secured enough components to sell 22.6 million units by March 2022. This means that the company would need to sell 9.2 million consoles between now and March. While the demand is certainly there for that, it remains to be seen whether PlayStation will be able to manufacture enough systems to hit that goal.

Here are the free games hitting PlayStation Plus in November 2021

Every month, PlayStation offers a few games at no additional cost to those subscribed to its PlayStation Plus service.

Now, the company has revealed the batch of games that will land on PS Plus in November. This time, there are six free games up for grabs, instead of the usual three, because of the fifth anniversary of PlayStation VR. To celebrate the occasion, PlayStation Plus is offering three free PS Plus games in addition to the trio of PS4/PS5 titles.

To start, there are two PS5 games this month — the dodgeball multiplayer title Knockout City and the social deduction party title First Class Trouble. Notably, both the PS5 and PS4 versions of these games are free with PS Plus; normally, the service only offers one or the other.

Meanwhile, the last of the main three free PS Plus games is the action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on PS4. All three games will be available to download for free through PlayStation Plus from November 2nd to December 6th.

As for the PS VR freebies, you can claim the procedurally generated horror game The Persistence, first-person shooter survival title The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (Standard Edition) and the first-person sword fighter Until You Fall.

The PS VR titles will be free from November 2nd to January 3rd.

If you haven’t claimed them yet, October’s free PS Plus games will remain free until November 1st — read up on those here.

Apple Music launches on PlayStation 5 globally

Apple Music is coming to PlayStation 5 later today.

Earlier this month, some PS5 owners had noticed that the music streaming service was popping up for them, but now, Apple and PlayStation have made it official.

With an Apple Music subscription, PS5 users can access more than 90 million songs, as well as tens of thousands of curated playlists, 4K music videos and more.

Functionally, Apple Music on PS5 works just like Spotify. You can either start the Apple Music app before hopping into a game or, if you’re currently playing one, can do so by selecting the ‘Music Function’ card from the Control Center. This will let you listen to music in the background.

However, you can also find and watch music videos from the Apple Music app. Playback will begin in full screen, although it will be reduced to audio-only if you return to your game or go elsewhere on the PS5’s home screen. Returning to the music video will re-open it to continue fullscreen viewing without interruption.

The Apple Music app can be downloaded from the Media space on your PS5. From there, follow the on-screen instructions to link your Apple Music account. PlayStation says more info on this process can be found here.

An Apple Music subscription starts at $9.99 CAD/month. A membership is also included in the Apple One service bundles, which start at $15.95/month.

It’s worth noting that Apple and PlayStation have also partnered on a promotion that gives PS5 owners six months of Apple TV+ for free. Read more on that here.

The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S updates have been delayed

The new-gen updates of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 have been delayed, publisher CD Projekt has confirmed.

On social media, the company noted that the releases have been pushed back “based on recommendations supplied by teams supervising the development of both games.” The publisher apologized for the prolonged wait but said “we want to make it right.”

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of both titles will now drop in 2022 — Cyberpunk 2077‘s in the first quarter, and The Witcher 3‘s in the second. They had previously been set to arrive sometime in late 2021.

Specific features and gameplay from either title have not yet been revealed, although CD Projekt has confirmed that those who have purchased the games on last-gen consoles will receive the new-gen updates at no additional cost.

It’s likely that CD Projekt is being especially cautious with how well these versions perform, given the extra level of scrutiny that it’s fallen under over the past year. Since the disastrous, bug-ridden December 2020 launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the previously well-regarded company’s image has been tarnished.

In the near future, CD Projekt also has free downloadable add-ons for Cyberpunk 2077 to release, as well as paid expansions and some sort of multiplayer suite.
