Public Mobile offering 12GB of bonus data on all plans

If you’re looking for a cheap data plan, don’t count Public Mobile out. The third-tier Telus-owned flanker brand now offers 4G data speeds and great prices.

As of the time of writing, the carrier’s website in Ontario is offering 12GB of bonus data on top of each plan. This means you can get 17GB for $40 or 20GB for $50. There are a few other plans, topping out at 52GB for $90.

Plans also include unlimited Canada-wide calling and texting. It’s worth noting that Public Mobile subscribers on RedFlagDeals mention that upgrading retains your Public Mobile points and promotions like loyalty and auto-pay.

Overall, these are pretty great deals considering 8GB of 4G data from Virgin Plus costs $55 per month.

You can view the plans for yourself here.

Public Mobile adds more 4G plan options

Back in July, Telus flanker brand Public Mobile rolled out new 4G plans, marking a major shift for the provider. Previously, it had only offered 3G plans. Now, Public is expanding its 4G plan options.

In a post on its community forums, Public detailed three new 4G-capable plans, including:

  • $55/mo 8GB with unlimited Canada-wide minutes, international text and picture messaging, voicemail, and call display
  • $60/mo 10GB with unlimited Canada-wide minutes, international text and picture messaging, voicemail, and call display
  • $65/mo 15GB unlimited Canada-wide minutes, international text and picture messaging, voicemail, and call display

All three plans offer data at 4G speed, which according to Public’s fine print, is up to 100Mbps. Public’s 3G plans, on the other hand, offer download speeds up to 3Mbps.

Public also offers 3x ‘Points Back’ on each of these plans for new customers for 12 months. Public Points, also introduced earlier this year, can be redeemed for discounts on your bill, add-ons, or entries into contests. Customers can earn five percent Points Back for every dollar spent, and can also earn points for things like refer-a-friend, helping out on Public’s community forums, and more.

These plans are similar to the 4G plans Public Mobile launched in July. In August, the provider briefly offered a $55/20GB student offer (which is a better deal than the new 4G plans). It’s not clear what happened between July and now that led Public to relaunch previously-available plans. Either way, there are now more 4G plan options for Public customers.

Public Mobile, Chatr offering 2GB bonus data for six months

Telus flanker brand Public Mobile and Rogers flanker brand Chatr are both offering 2GB of bonus data for six months on select plans.

Both carriers list the offer as available until July 18th, which gives you a couple of days to claim it (if you want). The main difference between the two is Public is offering the 2GB bonus on its new 4G plans (which start at $41.25/mo) while Chatr has the deal on its 3G plans starting at $35/mo.

While you have to get a slightly more expensive plan with Public Mobile, you also get the bonus of using 4G data, which should translate to much faster speeds (Public claims up to 30 times faster than its 3G plans).

Moreover, both providers will remove the data bonus if customers change their plan, so make sure you sign up with a plan you’ll want for at least six months. Additionally, the bonus will expire if the account becomes inactive.

You can check out the Public Mobile offer here, and the Chatr offer here.

Bell’s Lucky Mobile doesn’t currently offer a 2GB data bonus, but it does have a one-month free offer for those who sign up before July 18th.

Public Mobile will move to 100 percent online-only on July 13

As of July 13th, Public Mobile will be moving to 100-percent online-only and will no longer have retail locations, according to tip from a MobileSyrup reader.

Additionally, as of May 3rd, Koodo Prepaid will be available alongside Public Mobile, which means the two brands will overlap for a time until July 13th.

According to the information given to us by a reader, Koodo Prepaid will now be the “value brand of choice.”

Koodo Prepaid will include:

  • Call centre support
  • 3G and 4G speed plans
  • Koodo prepaid account management tool, which will allow sales reps to support customers with account management-related transactions. These include rate plan changes, booster purchases and SIM swaps.

Koodo Prepaid will also need no credit checks, no contracts and no overage charges, referral bonuses, chatbots and a self-care section on the website.

Public Mobile isn’t the only online-only carrier. Videotron’s Fizz Mobile moved to online-only back in 2020.

We’ve reached out to Koodo/Public Mobile for further information and will update this story.

Public Mobile flash sale nets you an extra 2GB of data per month for a year

Telus’ Public Mobile also has a flash sale going on. Customers can get 2GB of bonus data per month for a year.

The offer is available in-store until March 31st, 2022. Alternatively, it’s available online if customers order a SIM before March 31st and activate that SIM by April 15th.

To claim the offer, customers need to activate a new Public plan that costs $25/mo or more using promo code 12MONTHS2GB. Public’s website says the bonus data will be “applied for 12 months as long as you’re with us.”

However, the fine print on the website notes that the bonus data will expire if the account becomes inactive or if customers change the rate plan. In other words, make sure the plan you pick when signing up is one you’ll want for the next 12 months.

The offer is available to new customers who activate online or in-store. You can view a list of Public’s plans below:

  • $25/mo 500MB + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada-wide minutes
  • $35/mo 2.5GB + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada-wide minutes
  • $40/mo 4.5GB + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada-wide minutes
  • $50/mo 10GB  + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada/U.S. minutes
  • $60/mo 15GB + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada/U.S. minutes
  • $70/mo 20GB + 2GB bonus, with unlimited Canada/U.S. minutes

It’s worth noting that all of Public’s plans include unlimited international text and picture messaging. Customers can also get an extra 500MB of data each month if they use Public’s AutoPay service.

All included data is capped at 3G speeds.

Moreover, Bell’s Lucky Mobile and Rogers’ Chatr Mobile also have flash sales on, but I think Public’s offer is a little better. It has a smaller bonus (2GB/mo instead of 3GB) but over a longer period of time (12 months vs. six months), which works out to more data in the long run.

You can view Public’s flash sale here.

Public Mobile offering 2GB of bonus data in flash sale

Public Mobile is offering new customers 2GB of bonus data for six months for a limited time.

The free offering only applies to plans starting at $35 a month. The $35 plan offers 2.5GB of data, and the bonus will mean users get 4.5GB of data for the first six months. That’s the same amount of monthly data on their $40 a month plan.

Of course, there are a few caveats. The offer expires on March 21, and only new customers can cash in on the deal. Users must use the promo code ‘6MONTH2GB’ for the offer to apply. The offer isn’t valid on their $15 or $25 monthly plans.
