Black Widow lost over $600 million in PVOD revenue due to piracy: report

For a long period earlier during the pandemic, all eyes were on Disney to see whether the company would bring Marvel’s Black Widow to Disney+ and theatres on day one, as it did with 2020’s live-action Mulan remake.

Eventually, Disney did indeed go this route in July 2021, in which Disney+ subscribers could pay $34.99 CAD to stream the movie. Now, we’re learning just how much that ‘Premier Access’ has cost the company.

In a larger feature about Hollywood’s approach to day-and-date theatrical/streaming releases, Deadline reports that rampant online piracy cost Disney around $600 million USD (about $762 million CAD) on the Scarlett Johansson-led superhero flick in premium video on demand (PVOD) revenue alone. That’s because people were quickly able to snag 4K-quality copies of the film in several languages and post them online.

This doesn’t count how much less money the movie earned in theatres due to the Premier Access release, or the $40 million-plus (about $51 million CAD) settlement it reached with Johansson over a high-profile Black Widow contract dispute.

Of course, a company like Disney will be more than fine after this, but it’s nonetheless interesting to see how much financial impact piracy can have.

The big takeaway from Deadline‘s feature, though, is that the hybrid cinema-digital release, in general, went out “like a dud.” Even movies that were offered day one at no cost in the U.S. on HBO Max, like King Richard, Reminiscence, In the Heights, Malignant and Judas and the Black Messiah, are said to have had “underwhelming” streaming audiences of two million or less.

That, coupled with the solid box office performance of films like Spider-Man: No Way HomeNo Time to Die and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is encouraging more studios to stick to theatrical-first releases. It remains to be seen whether the Omicron variant — which has already led to theatres closing in Ontario and Quebec — will alter these plans.

Canadian streaming round-up — Amazon Prime Video, Crave, Disney+, Netflix and PVOD [2021 Edition]

Every week, we break down some of the most notable new shows and movies to hit Canadian streaming services. In these ‘Streaming in Canada’ columns, we also highlight either wholly Canadian content or American/foreign content that has significant Canadian connections.

However, with so much new content releasing every week, you’d be forgiven for not even being aware of most of what comes out in general, let alone Canadian-specific programming.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some of the most prominent shows and movies with major Canadian connections. This means titles that feature Canadians in prominent roles, be it in front of or behind the camera. While the goal is to focus on streaming-exclusive content, we’re also considering movies that had either short theatrical runs or hybrid theatrical-digital releases, given this weird period that we’re in. The same goes for shows that were released on both cable TV and digital platforms simultaneously.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

All Or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs

What If…?

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first foray into the world of animation offers alternate takes on classic franchise moments, like what would happen if T’Challa became Star-Lord, Doctor Strange turned evil following a tragic loss or Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers.

Bradley (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia) and features most of the MCU actors reprising their respective roles, including the late Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man) and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter). Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright also voices MCU newcomer The Watcher, who narrates the series.

And if that weren’t enough, several Canadian actors reprise their MCU roles in the series: Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta’s Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne/The Wasp), London, Ontario’s Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Port Perry, Ontario’s Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), and Vancouver’s Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill).

No Time To Die is now available on PVOD in Canada

If you were waiting to watch the latest James Bond flick at home, you’re now in luck.

No Time To Die, the 25th James Bond film and actor Daniel Craig’s last outing as the iconic British superspy, is now available on premium video on demand (PVOD) services in Canada. This marks one month since the film opened in North American theatres following multiple COVID-19 related delays.

For now, No Time To Die is only offered through a 48-hour, $24.99 CAD rental on platforms like iTunes, Google Play, the Cineplex Store and the Amazon Prime Video Store.

It’s important to note that it’s currently unclear which over-the-top streaming service No Time To Die will eventually land on. All of the other Bond films are currently available on Crave, which suggests No Time To Die will follow suit. That said, Amazon is also in the midst of acquiring Bond studio MGM, so the film may eventually make its way to Prime Video.

Picking up after the events of 2015’s Spectre, No Time To Die follows Craig’s Bond as he’s pulled out of retirement by the CIA to investigate a kidnapped scientist who holds the key to a deadly bioweapon. The film was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and co-stars Léa Seydoux, Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Christoph Waltz and Ralph Fiennes.
