Upcoming Motorola Razr’s massive cover screen revealed in leak

Following a leak that claimed an upcoming Razr-branded foldable from Motorola would sport a huge cover display, leaker Evan Blass shared images of the device on Twitter.

Blass, whose account is currently private, shared four images of what he says will be called the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. The images mostly highlight the cover display, though a couple also showcase some personalization options.

The images show a cover display that takes up almost the entirety of the lid of the flip phone. It’s a stark difference from previous Razr foldables and even Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip line, which have offered — by comparison — minuscule cover screens.

Perhaps the most interesting part is that the cover display extends down around the dual camera lenses and the flash, creating a little area for notifications and weather information and leaving a larger portion to show the time and presumably for interacting with notifications — such as reading incoming messages or for call display.

Beyond the images, Blass didn’t share much else about the device. He did, however, note that Motorola plans to launch a second, “down market” flip phone in 2023. The device, codenamed ‘Venus,’ reportedly won’t sport the name Razr Lite has some have reported. Instead, Blass says it will be called the Razr 40.

Previous leaks said the Razr 40 Ultra’s cover display would measure 3.5-inches, beating out the rumoured 3.4-inch cover screen that will reportedly ship on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5.

It’s also worth noting that Motorola’s previous foldables haven’t had great Canadian availability. The first Razr foldable launched in the U.S. in February 2020 but didn’t arrive in Canada until April — when it did show up, it was only available at Telus and its subsidiaries, and Freedom Mobile. Motorola’s subsequent foldables haven’t come north of the border.

Motorola could double down on foldables next year with two Razr devices

While the Canadian foldable market is dominated by Samsung, elsewhere in the world, manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Huawei are also exploring foldables. Beyond these manufacturers, there’s also Motorola, which once upon a time launched a foldable in Canada, but seems to now be avoiding our market.

The company has been working on its Razr line for the past few years, first releasing its most recent Razr in China before bringing it to an international market (likely not including Canada) in the coming weeks. Now, a new rumour indicates the company will launch two Razr-branded devices next year.

According to the prolific leaker Evan Blass, Motorola could launch two Razr devices next year, codenamed ‘Juno’ and ‘Venus.’ The current Razr 2022 is codenamed Maven, not a Roman goddess.

Blass doesn’t offer any more details, however.

At the recent Lenovo Tech World 2022, Motorola parent company Lenovo revealed a rollable phone that unrolls vertically. It’s possible that this might one of the handsets that Motorola will launch next year.

Unfortunately, we probably won’t get either device in Canada given the company has shifted its focus to other markets like China.

Alleged Motorola Razr 3 hands-on shows off crease-less display

We’re getting our first look at the upcoming Razr foldable in motion with a new GIF leaked by the often-reliable popular Evan Blass.

The leak posted by Blass shows a person holding the device, unlocking it and then folding it. What’s impressive is that the image doesn’t offer a crease until it phones. As someone who reviewed the Z Flip 3, I noted that “the crease is still present and very visible, and eventually you do get used to it.” However, Motorola’s phone seems like it won’t have that problem, at least from the GIF we’re seeing.

This handset is rumoured to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset (or 8+ Gen 1 if you get the updated variant) and sport up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Additionally, it’s poised to sport ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, which will allow it to work with digital car keys and other UWB-compatible accessories and devices.

It’s worth noting that this GIF corroborates with past leaks indicating that the phone will lose some of its Razr elements like the bottom chin and now offers a more modern appearance.

The foldable is rumoured to launch in either late July or early August and comes in Quartz Black and Tranquil Blue colour variants.

Motorola Razr 2 successor to look more like Samsung’s Flip 3 than Razr

Motorola’s next foldable device has leaked online with the codename ‘Maven.’ This time, Motorola has reportedly developed a flagship-level handset that’s scheduled to launch in the summer, according to 91mobiles.

The phone sports more of resemblance to Samsung’s Galaxy Flip 3 than the Razr or Razr 5G. For example, the device is overall boxier and features two rear-facing cameras like Samsung’s Flip 3. According to the rumour, Maven will offer a 50-megapixel f/1.8 primary shooter and a 13-megapixel camera for macro and ultra-wide shots.

Additionally, the phone is expected to sport a 32-megapixel hole-punch selfie shooter, with an FHD+ interior folding display. The standard variant of the device is supposed to feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, with the “Plus variant” of the device sporting the rumoured Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, as well as up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

The phone will also lose the bottom chin featured on previous Razr devices and offers a more modern appearance.

Alongside Maven, Felix is another device that Motorola is working on. The device features a rollable display, instead of a folding one like the Razr. It’s unclear when Felix would make an appearance as the device is in its very early stages of development, according to 91mobiles.  However, the publisher guesses that it’s at least a year away from launching.

While many other companies that are or have talked about rollable phones, like LG, TCL and Samsung, Motorola isn’t working on making a device with a bigger display, but is instead trying to make the phone more pocket friendly.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that Motorola has already started working on ‘Juno,’ the successor of Maven (the Razr 3). This device is also a year away from, however. 91mobiles says that the foldable will release in either late July or early August and come in Quartz Black and Tranquil Blue colour variants.

Motorola working on more powerful Razr foldable with improved appearance

Motorola plans to launch a new Razr foldable in 2022 with improved power and a better appearance.

The news comes via a post from Lenovo executive Chen Jin on Weibo (spotted by Android Authority). According to the translated post, the third-gen Razr will likely launch in China first and could sport a tweaked interface.

However, Motorola’s new Razr foldable will need to sport some major improvements if it hopes to compete in the current foldable market. The first Razr launched back in 2019, and the company followed it up with a slightly improved 5G version in 2020. The third-gen Razr will need to go toe-to-toe with devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3.

It’s worth noting that the original Razr came to Canada significantly later than the American launch, and the 5G version didn’t come to Canada at all. Hopefully, we see the third-gen Razr here, but it may not happen.

Presumably called the Razr 3, Motorola’s upcoming foldable would benefit from a higher-end chipset, bigger battery and a tougher foldable screen. If Motorola pulls off these upgrades, the Razr 3 could be a good option for those looking to buy a foldable.
