Galaxy Z Flip 5 renders show ‘tabbed’ outer screen

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 was rumoured to have a ‘tabbed’ external display — new renders give us a better idea of how this tabbed display will look.

The renders come from a partnership between leaker @OnLeaks and MediaPeanut and show off outer and inner displays. The Z Flip 5 is rumoured to sport a larger external display than the Z Flip 4 (though it’s not as big as the rumoured Motorola Razr 40 Ultra screen). The rumours clearly show the larger outer screen, with the rumoured ‘tab’ to make room for the cameras.

Along with the renders, MediaPeanut detailed some specs of the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The publication reports Samsung’s upcoming foldable will include a 6.7-inch main display, a 3.4-inch cover display, dual rear cameras, and measure 165 x 71.8 x 6.7mm when unfolded.

Beyond that, MediaPeanut suggests the phone could run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, feature battery improvements and launch in late July with a $999 USD (roughly $1,353.73 CAD) price tag. We could also see faster UFS 4.0 storage, at least in the models with 256GB of storage.

Overall, the Z Flip 5 seems to be shaping up well. However, I’m not entirely sold on the tabbed external display, especially after seeing the Razr 40 Ultra leaks. Motorola’s foldable will have a slightly larger 3.5-inch cover display that extends almost to the edge. Interestingly, the cameras are placed inside the display, similar to the hole-punch selfie camera popularized on many devices. To me, that looks a lot better than the tab, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see the phones in person — in my experience, controversial design choices tend to look better in person than in renders and photos.

Unofficial Pixel 8 renders reveal few significant changes from the Pixel 7

Pixel leak season is in full swing now. Following information revealed about the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7a through leaked retail listings, someone went hands-on with a whole Pixel 7a and unofficial renders of the Pixel 8 Pro, now the Pixel 8 is getting its turn in the spotlight.

Leaker OnLeaks partnered with MySmartPrice to share unofficial renders showing off what could be the design of Google’s Pixel 8 flagship. Assuming the renders and corresponding details are accurate, the Pixel 8 will sport a slightly smaller 6.2-inch screen (MySmartPrice listed it as 5.8 inches, but OnLeaks noted in a tweet that he got the measurements wrong). The Pixel 7, on the other hand, had a 6.3-inch screen.

Along with the smaller display, the Pixel 8 will have thinner bezels and more rounded corners than its predecessor. In the renders, the Pixel 8 looks superb with the nearly edge-to-edge display.

Plus, the Pixel 8 continues Google’s recent Pixel design trends with a prominent camera bar sporting two cameras. That likely means the Pixel 8 won’t sport any fancy new sensors and stick with the regular and ultrawide camera setup featured on the Pixel 7, though rumours point to an upgraded sensor. Interestingly, the mystery sensor featured on the Pixel 8 Pro renders doesn’t appear to be on the Pixel 8.

The dimensions of the Pixel 8 reportedly measure in at 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm, with the camera bar bringing it up to 12mm. That would make it slightly smaller and thicker than the Pixel 7’s 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7mm dimensions.

That’s about it in terms of new information shared by MySmartPrice. Beyond that, it’s a safe bet that the Pixel 8 will sport a new Tensor G3 processor and that it will likely launch in the fall alongside the Pixel 8 Pro. However, we could see the Pixel 8 teased at Google’s upcoming I/O developer conference in May, but it sounds like I/O will prominently feature other much-hyped Pixel phones too.

Unofficial Pixel 8 Pro renders give us a first look at Google’s upcoming flagship

Pixel leaks season is upon us.

Following a recent hands-on with a prototype Pixel 7a, OnLeaks and SmartPrix partnered to reveal unofficial renders of Google’s upcoming Pixel flagship based on “exclusive information on the design of the Pixel 8 Pro.”

Generally, it looks like the Pixel 8 Pro will maintain a similar style to the 7 Pro and 6 Pro that came before — assuming the renders are accurate. That means the camera visor will return (love it or hate it), though this time the renders show all three rear cameras housed in one glass oval, rather than the ‘i’ shaped cutouts on the 7 Pro.

Next to the cutouts for the camera are two small cutouts, one for a flash and another for an unknown sensor. SmartPrix suspects it could be a depth or macro sensor, but we likely won’t know for sure without more leaked info, or until the phone launches.

Beyond that, it appears the Pixel 8 Pro will offer a flat display instead of a curved display like what was on the predecessors. Fans of curved displays may lament the change, but I think this is the right move.

The display bezels also look pretty small, save for a slight chin at the bottom. The screen will reportedly measure in at 6.52-inches, slightly smaller than the 6.7-inch panel on the 7 Pro. The phone’s overall dimensions will allegedly be 162.6×76.5×8.7mm, and the camera bar will bring the thickness up to 12mm.

That’s about it for what the renders reveal. So far, we don’t know a lot about the Pixel 8 series, although it’s expected the phones will run on a Tensor G3 chip, likely based on a Samsung Exynos chip again. There’s also a rumour the Pixel 8 line will use an updated camera sensor, the Samsung ISOCELL GN2 with support for staggered HDR.

Once again, the Pixel series is expected to launch later in the year, likely in October or November. However, the phones could be teased at Google’s upcoming I/O developer conference, which kicks off May 10th. We might also see the launch of another Google phone — the Pixel 7a — as well as reveal new details about Android 14, which will likely run on the Pixel 8 series.

More Pixel Fold renders surface online with specs

Leaker OnLeaks is back, this time with details about Google’s long-rumoured foldable Pixel. In combination with the website Howtoisolve, OnLeaks shared renders showing off the so-called Pixel Fold along with some specs.

First, the site notes that the Pixel Fold is expected to release in May 2023 sporting a design similar to Google’s current series of Pixel phones. Per the renders, the Pixel Fold will feature a large camera bar with three cameras, although it won’t be connected to the edges of the phone like on the Pixel 7.

Howtoisolve reports that the phone’s dimensions will measure roughly 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7mm (8.3mm with the camera bump) when unfolded. The foldable will reportedly sport Google’s Tensor G2 chip, come in ‘Silver’ and ‘Black’ colours, USB-C charging, and will have a 5.79-inch cover display with a hold-punch selfie camera and a 7.69-inch inner display with a hole-punch selfie camera on the right side.

Moreover, Howtoisolve suggests the Pixel Fold might support a pen, sport 12GB of RAM, run Android 13, and cost $1,799 USD (roughly $2,443.27 CAD).

While all these details line up well with previous Pixel Fold leaks, suggesting they’re accurate, I’m not sure I buy Howtoisolve‘s claim of “~100% accurate rumors.” As with any leak, take a healthy dose of skepticism.

Front of Pixel 7 Pro shows up in official Google render for first time

As usual for a Google phone, we’ve seen a lot of the upcoming Pixel 7 and 7 Pro ahead of launch, thanks to plenty of official (and unofficial) pictures. One thing we haven’t officially seen is the front of the Pixel 7 Pro. At least, we haven’t until now.

9to5Google spotted an image (above) posted to the Pixel Superfans Facebook page that shows the front and back of the Pixel 7 Pro, finally confirming long-running rumours that Google toned down the curved display this year. Interestingly, the Superfans group is private, but Google put the official render as the public-facing header image.

Unfortunately, the image doesn’t offer any additional new information. It includes two renders of the Pixel Watch, the Pixel Buds Pro, and the back of the Pixel 7 Pro in the ‘Hazel’ colour.

As 9to5 points out, the official renders line up with previous leaks, namely a prototype Pixel 7 Pro that was heavily featured in hands-on videos earlier this year.

While fans of the curved display edge may lament the loss, it seems like a positive change to me. Curved display edges were all the rage a few years ago, but generally, phone manufacturers have moved away from them, perhaps because they suck. Curved screen edges are prone to accidental taps, distort what appears on the edge of the screen, are annoying for cases and screen protectors… the list could go on. I’m happy to see a subtle display curve on the Pixel 7 Pro this year.

We’ll likely learn more about the Pixel 7 Pro, as well as the Pixel 7, Pixel Watch, and other Google hardware, at the company’s upcoming October event.

New renders show off Fitbit’s Sense 2, Versa 4 and Inspire 3

It’s no secret that Fitbit has new smartwatches and fitness trackers on the way, and now new renders provide the best look yet at the upcoming Sense 2, Versa 4 and Inspire 3.

The renders come from leaker OnLeaks and 91mobiles and show off Fitbit’s new devices in various colours and with new watch faces. However, the details here are all about the looks — we know from previous leaks that the Sense 2 and Versa 4 will bring back the physical button, and the Sense 2 will move the electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor under the glass. That’s a significant departure from the Sense, which uses a stainless steel band around the edge of the watch for ECG.

Presumably, the Sense 2 will also support all of the features available on the original Sense, including SpO2 sensing, heart rate tracking, an electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor, and 50m water resistance. The leaked renders show off the Sense 2 in three colours, ‘Gold,’ ‘Graphite,’ and ‘Platinum.’

The Versa 4 will also look similar to its predecessors and likely will sport similar features, although we know less about it overall. It’s expected to come in ‘Graphite’ and ‘Rose’ colours and will sport voice assistant support and an OLED display.

Finally, if pricey smartwatches aren’t your style, Fitbit also has plans to refresh its lower-cost Inspire tracker. The Inspire 3 hasn’t appeared in many leaks yet, but the renders suggest Fitbit won’t significantly change the design. Likely, the Inspire 3 will continue to be the go-to option for people who want basic fitness tracking for a reasonable price.

Although it looks like Fitbit has a suite of new devices on the way, it remains unclear when any of these devices will launch. Fitbit unveiled the original Sense in August 2020, so it’s possible there could be a Fitbit event soon. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that Google now owns Fitbit, and the company’s upcoming Pixel Watch is expected to leverage Fitbit tech. It’s possible we could see a later Fitbit launch, perhaps in line with the Pixel Watch reveal expected later this year (perhaps in October, alongside the Pixel 7 series?).

Google Pixel 6a renders show smaller design, no headphone jack

Renders of a potential Pixel 6a design have arrived, showing off a new design direction for Google’s lower-cost ‘a’ Pixel line.

The renders come from Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks, via 91Mobiles) and show a Pixel 6a sporting a very similar design to Google’s recently launched Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. That means the camera bump bar is back, likely with a two-tone back panel like with the flagship Pixel phones.

Additionally, the renders show a centre hole-punch selfie camera cutout like on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. It’s not clear if Google will actually do that with the 6a, but since the a-series typically sport a similar design to the current Pixel flagships, I’d say there’s a good chance the 6a will sport the centre selfie cam.

Interestingly, the renders don’t show a physical fingerprint sensor on the back of the Pixel 6a. If accurate, it could mean the 6a will use an in-display scanner like the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.

The Pixel 6a renders also don’t show a headphone jack, which could be a significant shift for Google’s budget Pixel line. So far, every a-series Pixel has had a headphone jack — something Google has gone out of its way to highlight before.

Finally, the Pixel 6a reportedly measures in at 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.7mm, suggesting it will sport a display around the 6.2-inch mark. That makes it a little smaller than the Pixel 6 at 158.6 x 74.8 x 8.9 mm with a 6.4-inch screen. That could make the Pixel 6a an option for those out there who like the Pixel 6 but want it in a smaller form factor (like me).

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that these are just renders, and we’re still likely months away from an actual Pixel 6a launch, assuming Google releases a Pixel 6a at all. In other words, a lot of these details could change.
