Here are the changes to Canadian mobile rate plans this week [April 7 – April 13]

With over 13 wireless providers in Canada, it can be difficult to keep track of the latest promotions and cell phone rate plan changes.

Rogers ends several wireless promos, some plans increase by $5/mo

Toronto-based national telecom Rogers has ended several of its ongoing promotional offers, increasing the cost of some plans by $5/mo and offering less data with others.

First, Rogers’ base $85/mo plan lost its 15GB data bonus, going from 40GB to 25GB. It appears Rogers started offering the extra data in early March, but it’s not clear exactly when. This plan wasn’t marked as a limited-time offer like Rogers’ other plans.

Next up, Rogers’ increased the cost of its 45GB and 50GB plans by $5/mo. Rogers rolled out discounts for these plans on March 8th and both plans have sported limited-time labels since then. The plans now cost:

  • $95/mo for 45GB
  • $100/mo for 50GB, unlimited Canada-U.S. calling, texting, and data

Finally, Rogers still offers its $175/mo 100GB plan, although it appears unchanged.

Prior to the discounts rolled out in March, Rogers changed its $110/65GB plan to $100/50GB. In February, the company raised the prices of its plans across the board.

At the time of publication, Bell and Telus hadn’t changed their plan offerings. Both carriers offered $85/25GB and $100/50GB plans. Telus also has a $90/40GB plan, while Bell has a $95/45GB plan. You can check out Telus’ plans here and Bell’s plans here.

Telecom complaints decreased over the past year, the CCTS reports

Telecom complaints are down 26 percent, according to a recent report from the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS).

The report examines complaints received between August 1st, 2021 and January 31st, 2022, and compares them to the last mid-year report.

The CCTS accepted 6,682 complaints on 14 providers, with a 88 percent resolve rate.

The recent report shows complaints decreased by 26 percent, a change from the last report, which reported an increase.

Bell accounts for 17.7 percent of all complaints, Rogers 15 percent, Fido 11.3 percent, Telus 8 percent and Virgin Plus 7.6 percent.

Bell has the largest decrease, with 36 percent fewer complaints than the year prior. Fido follows with 20 percent. Rogers and Telus reported close declines, with 16.5 percent and 16.9 percent, respectively. Virgin Plus saw nearly 10 percent fewer complaints.

The Wireless Code

Wireless complaints represented almost half of all complaints the CCTS accepted, with ‘disclosure issues’ in the lead. Conflicts with contracts and agreements were the most complained about aspects.

The CCTS found 24 breaches of the wireless code, down from the 28 reported last year.

9 of these breaches stem from providers failing to give customers reasonable notification and relevant information before disconnecting services.

4 of the breaches were because the service provider didn’t supply the customer with a paper or electronic copy of the contract listing all relevant information to the wireless code.

3 of the breaches are related to ‘critical information summary’ where providers must give customers a document containing the most essential parts of the contract.

“We continue to observe problems with service providers failing to disclose important information to their customers when signing up for a new phone, internet or TV service,” CCTS Commissioner and CEO Howard Maker said. “This can lead to complaints if bills or services don’t meet the customer’s expectation.”

Eligible low-income families and seniors can soon access internet for $20/month

The Government of Canada is partnering with 14 internet service providers (ISPs) to bring $20 a month internet to low-income families and seniors.

The partnership is through the government’s Connecting Families initiative. According to the government’s website, ISPs participate in the program “voluntarily and without and without government subsidy.”

Access Communications, Bell, CCAP, Cogeco, Hay Communications, Mornington, Novus, Rogers, SaskTel, Shaw, Tbaytel, Telus, Vidéotron, and Westman Communications are participating in the program.

“Many low-income Canadians are still facing barriers that prevent their full participation in the economy,” François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said.

“By working closely with internet service providers across the country, we are increasing accessibility and providing all Canadians with affordable and reliable internet.”

This announcement is the second phase of the Connecting Families initiative.

Families receiving the Canada Child Benefit and Guaranteed Income Supplement are eligible for the program. The program includes 50Mbps download speeds and 200GB of data usage each month. If 50Mbps is not available, it will consist of the fastest download speed in the region.

The first version of the plan, Connecting Families 1.0, which offered a $10 internet plan, is still available.

Eligible families should keep an eye on their mailboxes. They’ll receive a letter from the government with an access code needed to sign up for the program.

The offering is part of the government’s plan to ensure 98 percent of Canadians have high-speed internet access by 2026. The government has also made significant investments in the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF) to achieve this goal. A map of all UBF funded projects can be viewed here.

Rogers adds two cell towers to project closing wireless gap along Highway of Tears

Rogers is adding two additional cellular towers along Highway 16 in B.C.

The move is part of the company’s plan to extend wireless services along part of the highway, also known as the Highway of Tears. The name references the many Indigenous women and girls who go missing along the highway.

A total of 14 cell towers will go up along the highway between Prince Rupert and Prince George under the commitment.

The two new towers will add 26 kilometres of service on top of the 252 kilometres the original 12 towers will bring.

“These towers will provide salvation to many vulnerable people in the area,” Mary Teegee, a Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) activist, said. “Connectivity isn’t just cell phones, and this project will be foundational to build further, much needed services like bus routes in the area to make a difference.”

Rogers started constructing the first towers late last year.

The company has also sponsored two memorial Totem Poles that will be placed at each end of the Highway of Tears. The project is known as the Two Sisters Totem poles. The MMIWG and the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society (IRSSS) started the project.

“Projects like this are key to ensuring women, especially Indigenous women, who are not safe can call for help and receive the services they need,” Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, said.

Rogers and Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network launch 5G transportation challenge

Rogers and the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) have launched a challenge to expedite automotive innovations.

Mobility and transportation small and medium-sized enterprises, including designers and strategists, in the province of Ontario, must think about how they can use Rogers 5G network to create an application that utilizes the network, high precision positioning technologies and multi-access edge computing.

“This 5G Transportation Challenge will bring to life innovative new transportation solutions driven by our world-class 5G network,” Jorge Fernandes, chief technology and information officer at Rogers, said. “The whole sector is being transformed by the possibilities that come with 5G, and we’re confident that the smart-city use-cases that will come out of this new challenge will help fuel future innovation.”

Winners will display their applications at the David Johnston Research and Technology Park at the University of Waterloo. They’ll be using Rogers’ 5G-enables testbed, an element of the 5G Smart Campus at the university. Rogers and the University of Waterloo entered a multi-year partnership in 2019.

“Through OVIN, we’re building a network that is driving the future of automotive and mobility sector to build safer, cleaner, and more efficient transportation,” Raed Kadri, head of OVIN, said. “Ontario is at the forefront of this industry transformation, and we are excited to partner with Rogers on this challenge, to continue to drive prosperity for the province through 5G innovation.”

Those interested in participating must submit their ideas by May 2nd. The two organizations will announce the finalists on May 24th. Finalists will then pitch their ideas to a live panel of judges from various organizations, including Ericsson and Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division.

The winner will work closely with Rogers to continue the development of their solution.

Rogers removes 100GB $175/month wireless plan from website

Rogers has removed the most expensive wireless plan option from its website.

The plan, priced at $175/month, offered 5G network access, unlimited data with 100GB of high-speed shareable speeds, and unlimited calling, texting and data in Canada and the U.S.

Perks included $20/month in savings for additional lines, six months of free Disney+ access, and an option to get a free tablet or watch plan when financing a tablet or Apple Watch.

It’s unclear why Rogers removed the plan as it didn’t label it a limited-time offer.

The company’s plans labelled as limited-time offers, including 45GB for $90/month and 50 GB for $95/month, are currently active.

The only plan not offered as a promotion still available on the website is the 40GB plan for $85/month.

Rogers launches commercial 5G standalone network

Toronto-based telecom giant Rogers has launched the first commercially available 5G standalone network in Canada.

Customers with compatible devices, such as the Google Pixel 6 and the Google Pixel 6 Pro, can connect to the network. The new network allows for more advanced wireless capabilities, such as ultra-low latency, network slicing and mobile edge computing.

Ericsson serves as the network partner.

The launch comes after completing its standalone core network rollout and its 5G standalone device certification.

“This milestone underscores our ongoing leadership in 5G and will bring immediate benefits to customers by increasing coverage, scalability and availability, and improving network response times, enabling a world of new use cases and applications,” Jorge Fernandes, chief technology officer at Rogers, said.

B.C. project to improve Highway 3 cell coverage between Hope and Keremeos

The B.C. government announced a new project to improve cellular coverage along Highway 3 between Hope and Keremeos.

The project will see the addition of 11 new cell towers along an estimated 93km of the highway. In a release, the B.C. government said the added towers will improve safety for users as the province works to strengthen highway infrastructure following recent flooding.

“We are working hard to expand connectivity where it’s most needed in the province,” said Lisa Beare, B.C.’s minister of citizens’ services, in the release.

“Cellular coverage along key transport routes like Highway 3 is important for both commercial and recreational travellers, as it will enable people to stay connected and to access road safety updates and important emergency services while on the road.”

The release notes that cell coverage along the described section of Highway 3 is intermittent. The coverage gaps between Hope and Manning Park, and the gaps between Princeton and Keremeos present the greatest challenge. However, the project should lead to consistent coverage along the whole route.

The provincial government will invest up to $3.1 million through the Connecting British Columbia grant program. The Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) will administer the grant, which will partially fund the project’s $9.7 million cost. Rogers Communications will foot the rest of the bill.

B.C. expects the project to be completed by fall 2024.
