Rogers CEO overtakes Telus Chief as the highest paid telecom executive

Tony Staffieri, the CEO of Rogers raked in a staggering $31.52 million in compensation last year, which was enough for him to overtake Telus CEO, Darren Entwistle as Canada’s highest-paid telecommunications chief, according to The Globe and Mail.

Entwistle’s total compensation on the year was still nothing to scoff at, with the Telus chief pulling in $17.49 million on the year. Despite serving the longest, his compensation total puts him in second among Canada’s big three telecom giants, with Bell’s Mirko Bibic following behind at $13.59 million.

A major cause of Staffieri’s rise in compensation in 2022 was due to perks following his appointment as CEO in January and Rogers’s acquisition of Shaw Communications.

Staffieri’s promotion from CFO to CEO, along with the company’s increase in annual pay led to Rogers estimating nearly $10 million in additional lifetime future pension cost. Companies are required to report changes in executives’ future pension income to security regulators each year, and the $9.9 million contributed to the CEO’s $31.52 million annual compensation.

Apart from this, the remainder of Staffieri’s was comprised of stock awards, bonuses and his salary. To sweeten things for the chief, he was awarded a $1.83 million dollar annual bonus as a result of Rogers achieving its revenue goals and profit targets in 2022.

If that wasn’t enough, Staffieri received an additional stock-option award that was valued at $8 million. He has the opportunity to collect the award if Rogers meets its undisclosed on the first and second anniversaries of the Shaw takeover.

The CEO’s paycheque may be overinflated this year, but according to the company, it may be a one-time deal. Rogers has set his normal annual compensation at around $10.5 million, giving the Telus chief a chance to get back in front by the end of this year.

Rogers to acquire BAI, bring cell service to TTC subway users

Rogers will soon own BAI Communications’ Canadian faction, a telecom company with the rights to build the TTC’s wireless network.

The telecom giant says the move will allow it to gradually bring 5G services to subway riders, including access to 911 services. Rogers says the project will take two years to complete, citing “limited overnight construction windows.”

BAI has owned the infrastructure since 2012, according to Rogers, and has presented companies with the opportunity to sign on to provide full-service coverage to all TTC riders, including those using the subway. Freedom Mobile was the only company to complete the measure in 2017. Bell, Telus, and Rogers never signed on.

TTC riders have faced a rise in violence in the past months, and while the transit company has introduced some measures to attempt to address the issue, the lack of connectivity underground is a glaring problem.

While it’s clear the move will benefit Rogers’ customers, it’s unclear what it means for customers using other networks and if problems will continue to persist.

Rogers offering $0 iPhone 14 with trade-in, Upfront Edge

Rogers customers can get a 128GB iPhone 14 for $0 down and $0/mo financing, though with several caveats.

First up, you need to go to a Rogers store to get the deal. That alone isn’t terrible, but you also have to sign up for Upfront Edge, which discounts the cost of the phone if you agree to return it to Rogers after 24 months (or pay the difference to keep it). Finally, customers need to “trade in an eligible iPhone 11 Pro 512 GB.”

According to the fine print, Rogers is offering a $360 trade-in credit for the iPhone 11 Pro 512GB. If you don’t go with the trade-in, you can pay $360 upfront instead, although that defeats the purpose of the deal.

It’s worth noting that for those who don’t want to go into the store, Rogers also offers the iPhone 14 for $15/mo online, down from the regular $47.13/mo financing cost. You can also still trade in a 512GB iPhone 11 Pro for a $360 credit, which would cover the $15/mo financing. Based on the information on Rogers’ website, I’m not totally sure what the difference is here beyond maybe that doing a trade-in online takes more time because you need to mail in the phone.

If you’re good with all those conditions, then congrats — you can get an effectively free iPhone 14 for two years.

You can check out the offer here.

Shaw Mobile customers will move to Rogers, get ‘exclusive’ 4G and 5G offers

In the wake of the Rogers-Shaw merger, Canadians have been left with many questions, like “how the hell could a government that keeps talking about telecom affordability let this merger happen?” But Shaw customers might have more questions than most about the merger and what it means for their services.

According to Rogers and Shaw, the answer to that is “nothing for now,” or some variation of that. A series of frequently asked questions (FAQ) pages (1, 2, 3 total) published by Shaw run through a ton of questions about what customers need to know following the merger, ranging from what customers need to do to whether equipment or billing practices will change. Almost every answer listed includes some variation of things “are not changing at this time” or “there is nothing you need to do.”

Either that or the answers are about how the merger is great for everyone (it isn’t), will deliver more choice (it won’t) and other vague platitudes.

On the one hand, that might prove comforting for some Shaw customers worried they’d suddenly find themselves living in a Rogers world. On the other, it makes for boring news. Except, not every answer is just “nothing is happening yet” or “this merger is really good, please believe us!”

Shaw Mobile customers can move to Rogers, keep rates

Shaw Mobile customers can migrate to Rogers.

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit is that starting April 4th, 2023, “all current Shaw Mobile customers will have the opportunity to move their wireless service over to the Rogers Wireless 4G LTE network while maintaining the same rates they currently enjoy with a five-year price commitment.”

Shaw Mobile, as a quick refresher, is the lesser-known Shaw wireless endeavour that only really existed out west and relied heavily on Shaw’s internet infrastructure to provide service. It had some decent plan prices (assuming you subscribed to Shaw internet). Ultimately, it might even be a win for customers if they keep their low plan price but can now use Rogers 4G LTE rather than a hodgepodge of Shaw internet, Wi-Fi hotspots and Shaw’s 4G LTE.

Shaw says Rogers will reach out to customers when their plan is ready for migration but until then — you guessed it — nothing will change.

Details on the Shaw migration

In fact, there’s an entire other FAQ specifically about the death of Shaw Mobile, which also notes that Shaw Mobile customers will eventually get “exclusive” 5G offers from Rogers too. As of April 4th, Shaw will no longer accept Shaw Mobile sign-ups.

Digging deeper, this FAQ also warns that the Rogers Mobile migration offer will be bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) only and won’t include features like Roam Like Home or 5G access. It also won’t be eligible for device financing. Another part of the FAQ notes that the special 4G LTE plans are “only available in Rogers retail locations.”

Elsewhere, the FAQ notes customers will be able to keep their lines and phone numbers, though another spot warns that only six Shaw Mobiel lines can migrate to the special 4G LTE plan.

Rogers offering $95/50GB Canada-U.S. plan until end of day

Rogers has a small, limited-time promotion offering its $95/mo 50GB ‘Infinite Premium’ plan with Canada-U.S. calling and texting instead of the regular Canada-only version.

iPhone in Canada spotted the promo over the weekend, but it ends on April 3rd, 2023.  As far as promos go, it’s not that crazy — the bump from Canada-wide talk and text to Canada+U.S. talk and text, as well as the ability to use data in the U.S., is small but nice. For frequent travellers, it could add up to significant savings compared to the $12/day Roam Like Home rate.

If I were paying that much money per month, I think I’d rather pay the extra $10/mo for the $105 Canada-U.S. plan with 100GB of data instead. But also, I’m not going to pay that much per month for my phone.

Rogers’ Canada-U.S. $95/mo promo.

Ultimately, this seems like another small shot at Telus and Bell after they upped the cost of daily roaming in the U.S. and international destinations. Rogers hasn’t followed suit, but the carrier has offered a free day of roaming and now a discounted Canada-U.S. plan. That said, Rogers isn’t innocent when it comes to price hikes — it has previously increased the daily roaming cost and more recently jacked up the price for calling long-distance from Canada to the U.S. to $1/minute.

You can check out the Canada-U.S. deal here.

Canadian carriers, take a page from U.S. telcos and give us free trials

Canadian carriers like to make big claims about how good their service is, especially when it comes to 5G. But I think it’s time they put their money where their mouth is and give Canadians a way to try how good (or bad) these services are, and U.S. carriers have a great example of how to do this.

If you haven’t heard, Verizon launched a 30-day free trial program that lets people in the U.S. leverage eSIM tech to test out its ultra-wideband 5G, 5G and 4G LTE networks. Verizon launched the program in November 2022 to match similar programs from T-Mobile and AT&T (via flanker brand Cricket).

Android Central published an interesting breakdown of how Verizon’s free trial works. It offers 100GB of data and unlimited talk and text, and you don’t even need to supply a credit card to sign up. People can sign up by downloading the Verizon app from the Play Store or App Store, selecting the option to start a free trial and following the steps to get set up with an eSIM. Verizon even supplies a temporary number to use so people can keep their current plan during the trial.

Obviously, there are some limitations to this. For one, it doesn’t do much for people who don’t have eSIM-compatible smartphones (though most smartphones sold in the last few years do support eSIM). Moreover, if Canadian carriers did adopt a free trial like this, it wouldn’t solve the rampant competition problems (which are only set to get worse thanks to a recent merger).

The main benefit of a free trial program like this is it would give Canadians a chance to test out if carrier promises live up to the hype.

5G is one of the main things that come to mind. Anecdotally, after using Bell and Telus 5G on my own devices, I’ve ended up back on a “worse” 4G LTE plan because it was still fast enough to handle my needs while also giving me more data and costing less per month. If there was a free trial offer, I might never have gone through the hassle of switching to a 5G plan just to find out it wasn’t worth it.

But beyond that, free trials could let people see if a carrier has adequate coverage where they live or work, and test if smaller players could meet their needs, potentially letting them save money by switching carriers. Plus, it’d benefit carriers too, since if their services were really the best available, they’d get more customers.

Ultimately, it’d be a huge win for consumers. Unfortunately, that’s also why we likely won’t see free carrier trials come to Canada any time soon.

But hey, a man can dream.

Rogers outage class action request likely to be heard in June

The lawyer overseeing a class action lawsuit against Rogers for the July 2022 national outage says a request for authorization to launch the suit will likely be heard in June 2o23.

Lawyer Joey Zoukran of LPC Avocat Inc. emailed the Montreal Gazette on March 31st to share the news. Zoukran explained that Rogers’ request to file preliminary evidence contesting the class action was granted. The hearing for authorization will likely take place at the Montreal courthouse on June 22nd.

Authorization (or certification as it’s called outside of Quebec) is part of the process that turns a lawsuit into a class action. This is also when the court determines if all the plaintiffs share a common claim and meet various criteria. CTV News has a great explainer on class actions you can view here.

The lawsuit against Rogers alleges the company’s compensation for the July 2022 outage wasn’t adequate. Instead, it seeks $400 for each customer of Rogers or its subsidiary brands like Fido and Chatr that lost service during the outage.

The outage started early the morning of July 8th and lasted two days or more in some regions. Rogers said a maintenance update in its core network caused the outage, which took down various services, including internet and calling, across Canada.

Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne previously said the outage would be a factor in the Shaw merger decision, but Champagne greenlit the merger on March 31st, 2023.
